Pirelli's estimation is that the 2013 rubber is approximately 0,5s faster. Making comparisons to last year though, I agree will lead to nowhere. Plus, I do think those were softs, not mediums.

But with no constant DRS doesn't this make the tyre difference void in a way? Surely over 1 one lap the DRS would count for more?

K peeps, I think ALL said and done - fuel loads, tyre life, track temperature, driver lunches bla bla - it is impossible for the car to be outright lacking in pace compared to the top 3-4 teams, atleast at the beginning of the season.

Its testing, DRS is free to use. There are too many factors to consider for crunching numbers, IMHO. I prefer not to at least. No solid conclusions to make. Would just confuse myself.

They are only using DRS on the main straight from what I have seen and others have said. It makes sense since these are the rules this year.

Hamilton with a 1:20.9 this time around...
it'll be interesting to hear his interview at the end of the day! "That's borderline top 10 pace Ted........"

Remember that the car was quick last year at this test due to the cold temps and worked perfectly in China, it was the high temps that it was slow. Don't get too excited...

dunno. in 2011 they dominated the timesheets at the last test with a 1:21.2, everyone was in awe, yet they still lacked compared to the big3.

He, he - yeah, wonder if he'll look like a kid who just found out his family moved next door to a sweet shop or if he'll be able to keep up the stonewalling.

What is that bulge all the way up of the inside of the rear wing end plate?

Now you know why Merc wasn´t using the soft tyres, they were saving them for today´s qualy-sim-fest!

Hamilton just did a 20.6, a slowdown lap, then a 21.9 (still faster than anyone today). Tyres seemingly not shredding themselves

A significant portion of the rear wing end plate is concave, so at certain points it appears as if it has bulges.

A 1.20.6 with 4 laps after that- essentially a 1.20.2!
Hopefully theyre on top of the tyre issues and can get them working this well in higher temps also!

@Druss - The Mercedes definitely looks better than last year, particularly I would say in traction and corner exit. Lewis, in and out of the car, looks happy, confident, relaxed – the most relaxed I’ve ever seen him. He was definitely going for it and now the track’s warming up, all of the cars are starting to look more ‘normal’ and they’re beginning to work – they’re in the zone.

since we are all speculating. Does that mean the Bulls will be able to do a 1.19.7 :)

Well, Melbourne is only 17C today compared to 14C in Barcelona, so we won't find out about true hot running until we get to Sepang. There were too many good signs for Merc at the beginning of last season to get too excited yet, though losing the DDRS and sorting out the coanda rear end could mean they've got a much better in-season development path this year.

  yep

when all is said and done I think its clear the car is fast in atleast certain conditions...

now we have to see if its faster in other conditions and it doesn't use up tires more than competitors on long runs

Am sure that this will be cleared up before the end of the day. I do think it was done on softs.

I'm not sure we should be that surprised that they did a 20.5, we calculated that they could do at least that from fuel adjusted laps from first Barcelona test. There'll be more in the car too, possibly even under .20. I think only red bull or mac might be able to match that...

We're hearing mixed messages about McLaren. Personally I'm think the Mac will be fast but again be hard to setup.

+1

Not that excited about the times, though quite obviously good to see. I still say the positive to take away so far is the fact that they have confirmed correlation with home-base data, and a steady, day-to-day development, with the obvious methodology of a top team. Still, what will count is the race performance. So far so good. looking forward to a race sim now in the afternoon, hopefully.

The pace seems to be coming mainly from a new rear wing with lower drag:

Hamilton's 1.20.5 today is 2.5 seconds quicker than Rosberg's q3 time at Barca last season. Cleary loads of variables, but clear progress nonetheless.

Edit:
But then again its also faster than his own time in a McLaren for that ill fated Q3 time, which makes the taking anything from testing times irrelavent....

Fastest time of the same day of the test last year was 1.22 flat by Perez in the Sauber with Button and a lot of others within a few tenths of that after all of them did flying laps. So Lewis is 1.5s faster than the same day last year, which with different tyres and temps doesn't mean much other than that it's encouraging.

Its an impressive time, no matter what variables you factor in.

I'm gonna get off the fence and say that Merc are looking very very strong. Right up there in fact....... Forget your "we'll be happy with the top ten" type stuff......

And as for the "it's just testing" mob wanting to have a go at that: Get an opinion or bugger off :smoking:

It wouldn't be too surprising. Red Bull and McLaren were in a class of their own at the end of last season and McLaren has gone for a more revolutionary design (relatively) which may set them back, particularly in the early stages.

Have to agree, RBR have never looked massively fast in pre season testing, they always seem to focus on heavy fuel running and don't run light, the one time they looked competitive-ish was 2011 and we all know how that season went. I don't think they'll have as big an advantage but i think it will be noticeable.
