Tight corners, traction important, one medium speed corner back on to straight.

Lewis Hamilton.

 On the money. Hamilton is exceptionally good in S3 Barcelona, Abu Dhabi etc - very similar characteristics, sharp direction changes, getting the power down quickly and using the mech grip to the fullest. And no one can pull out a better time than Hamilton.

Oh you have your witty cap on Sean. Reminds me of the US Pebble beach 2000 when Tiger Woods was leading by 10 shots going into the final round and reporter asked a a player what do they have to shot to win. And he replied 'Tiger Woods'

 Mercedes is running THAT rear wing in Barcelona and pulling times out of it??? Looks almost Spa-spec to me... If any of the fast times came off of that wing, its very encouraging, coz it means they can run with a lower drag configuration and still obtain the required rear downforce.

He was amazing at S1 at the Nurburgring as well.

Or the time isn't that good, and they are compensating for a lack of front end downforce :)

I'm not buying the 'its very close' talk. I think RBR will run and hide, gut feeling.

Not to turn this into a RBR-thread, but in pure pace, the lack of DRS in Q will hurt them big time.

Good showing by Mercedes.

I think the only way this car is not in the top 10 is if other teams have been sandbagging like crazy. All signs point to Mercedes, at the very least, being at the top of the "mid-field" (ie. top of the group following RBR, MCL, FER and LOT).

Yes, and they're the reigning 3-time WCC. Not too shabby to be able to do similar, eh? :)

Don't want to blow up the thread (and it's Gary Anderson...) but...

BBC F1 technical analyst Gary Anderson in Barcelona:
"When Eddie Jordan broke the news last September that Lewis Hamilton was moving to Mercedes this year, everyone thought it was a joke, but I tell you, the joke might be on them now. Lewis joined McLaren as a boy and he never really grew out of that. But he has joined Mercedes as a man and I have to say his body language is fantastic. He really is up for it.

"Can Mercedes make a car that is worthy of his talents? I think they've done it this year. Some of the lap times we've seen have already been pretty good, but today he has done a 1:20.5 on soft tyres on a low fuel run. That is a pretty impressive lap time. I think they have the talents to win races and win the championship this year."

Not that I dont wish or hope Merc could win. But does anyone remember what this idiot wrote at the beginning of testing when he completely wrote off Mercedes by just looking at the car. I dont take much stock on what he says.

I think the floor is new, the RW is new, and the FW seemed to have some mods too.

Interesting. Based on the lack of "image" analysis, it seems the mods were either fairly minor or under the skin. With teams like Ferrari not showing anything until Melbourne, that could be cause for concern...

McLaren went from a dog in early 2009, to a good, top-5 car at the end of the 2009 season to a car that could challenge for the WDC/WCC in 2010.
McLaren did another big jump from 2006 to 2007

It's definitely doable. We know that the W03 had pace at the start but ended up underdeveloped and went into some development dead ends.

If anything, Mercedes' challenge this year will be to properly and competitively develop the W04.

Did Lewis set his 1:20.8 on mediums or softs because Autosport reported mediums while I think other journos reported softs?!

Lewis set one 1:20.8 lap on mediums (ESPN F1 confirmed). The 1:20.5 was on softs fosho.

Crofty said they were mediums on Sky aswell. Said they are mediums made in a different factory to verify they have the same perforance as mediums from main factory.

the confusion is originated from the fact that yesterday's unmarked Romanian Pirellis were mediums, whereas today's were softs.

I just saw the video commentary and it was done at the Mercedes garage during a pit-stop. The high energy and excitement may have got to him a little. :)

Actually they were apparently not, Paulie's mistake yesterday.

No, the confusion is originating from people like Paul, Crofty and a lot of other insiders getting their facts wrong. lol

We can only go on what we are told. Autosport have stuck to the fact that at least one of Lewis' low fuel run was on the medium tyre.

It seems silly to even bring unmarked tyres to a test session IMHO.

Seriously though, RBR / Lotus will be faster come Melbourne I think. But, I am enthusiastic about Merc maybe being before McLaren/Ferrari. Even if equal, they have done a good job.

Why - they arnt testing for your benefit - they are testing for theirs. They are well aware of what tyre it is.

It's just an opinion. His point was that the Mercedes didn't look to have a lot of tricky aerodynamic features at the Jerez test and he felt this was their down fall last season. And Lewis himself said the car needed more downforce. He didn't write them off, he said they'd need to work hard to give Lewis a car to win races. I don't know if they've added more features since that test to change GA's mind but he's allowed to change his opinion.

You guys are far too hard on Gary Anderson, he can only comment on what he sees, he knows nothing of the internals of the car. And also, if one concept is fundamentally better than another, that's probably quite easy to see for him but what he can't know is how it all works in unison without access to windtunnel data, CFD etc. So it could be the case that he's right in praising McLaren's aggressive design this year and being skeptical of Merc's more conservative design, just that presently Merc are getting more out of their design - and that's taking the testing times at face value. It's really far, far more complicated than "he wasn't impressed with the car's design but it's really fast, so his points must be invalid". NO ONE can judge a car's actual level of performance by just looking at it, but I believe that a trained eye can see which ones have the most potential, and Gary Anderson is normally correct about that sort of thing.
