Quick... guess there is hope for Lewis this year.

Everything is relative....

(But I hope you're correct)

LOL, it seems like LH is asking himself the same question.

Wow, if that is it that's very poor on someones part to allow a pic like that slip through the cracks.

It's an 'Aabar' rear wing. That is last year's chassis.

I think, it is last year car.
Not many people in the house(from the picture). I hear for any new purchased TD, they fire 10 mechanics. ;)

Sidepods look to have a greater slope down though and air intake looks different too.

You're probably right but the side pod looks very different from that angle and without the rear cowling

Definitely not last years chassis. Could just be the old real wing bolted on, perhaps it's a launch spec car I.e. new chassis bit old wings etc, giving away as little as possible.

I'm expecting all cars up and down the grid to be evolutions their 2012 cousins. The revolution will come in 2014 and it will be televised!

Even the W03? It was pretty awful by the end. I guess it depends on your definition of revolution/evolution too. For me, if the exhaust layout is different with new fw and rw and different sidepod layout/profile that's a pretty big change which I wouldn't consider as evolution as so many fundamental parts have changed, but of course they are developed from last years car so I can see how one may see them as evolutions.

I believe the car would still be an evolution even with such visible changes, because although it may look quite different, the design concepts behind the new structures will remain largely the same.

Fair enough, as I said I can see that point of view, I just hope they roll out a car with many changes, (I think someone, Nico or Lewis, already said it resembles an RB) and that evolution or not, it shows much better than it's predecessor.

I agree, I don't see them starting off with a blank sheet of paper for the 2013 car. That is for 2014 car.

I think for most if not all, evoluiton is the way they are going to go for, especially as the rules are barely changed. I don't think the top cars are going to be able to find that much improvement but for teams like Merc, it provides an excellent opportunity to make big jumps because there is much more room for improvement.

I am willing to bet they (Merc) are not going to be 2sec/lap down even at the start of the season.

Exactly, its a bit like how Ferrari started and ended 2012, they evolved the car throughout the season and because they started off so poorly, it was easier for them to make large gains without exploring any of the fancy gadgets.

Is 2014 going to be the big revolution that everyone thinks it will be? Wasnt it announced that the areo regs, are not changing? So surely its all down to which manufacturer comes out with the best engine, which Mercedes do have a great chance of, but that same engine will be in various other cars throughout the field, areo is key.

I reckon that's just the car Nico demo'd earlier this week.

90% sure they wouldn't have the car just sitting there with so many journo's around.

It could, and it could not. Most possibly it will be, IMHO. There are enough changes to generate a formidable shakeup. The engine(ok, powertrain, or whatever) in itself could be a considerable differentiating factor, since it is a completely new design, and a new, so far unheard of, and untested concept with the ERS and its possible implications on overall performance of any given car, and so far it seems it will bring a completely new element to race-performance. So yes, I think even with relatively unchanged aero rules, it possibly will be. Revolution is a strong word though, I don't know about that.

I think the new Merc may be an "evolution" but not necessarily a simple evolution of the old Merc. I will be amazed if they haven't taken the "best of the rest" as the base line to evolve from. For instance a smaller gear-box and tighter packaging plus a major undercut of the side pods would seem obvious starting points with the coander exhaust being fed from that undercut.

@WonderboyF1

I think the mere fact of a new engine changes the packaging. The engines will probably be a bit smaller, but the extra components such as the turbo and intercooler will have to go somewhere. Not to mention the ERS. Due to higher torque, the gearbox may be a bit beefier. The exhaust(s) will follow a completely different route as well. So yeah, the rear packaging will change a great deal.

Correct me if Im wrong, but wont the front wing be a bit smaller as well? That alone will have a knock on effect on the aerodynamics of the rest of the car.

Dont kid yourselves. Even though the regs are more or less the same, the cars will probably be all new.

I can imagine a centre exit style exhaust, It will be easier for the FIA to manage the exhaust rules

Thats the Brawn 001 isnt it? With the newer wings from The w03? Looks to be to me, Maybe im wrong. Did W03 even have yellow centre/hub caps? (I know its only paint and easily applied) Maybe merc went back to the 1st car to better eveolve it as it was a championship winner when the regs changed for 2009.

Sky Sports F1 have an Inside Track: Lewis at Mercedes interview being played regularly - and they had a car behind Lewis throughout the interview and I couldn't work out what car it was - the rollhoop/airbox intake didn't look like a BGP001, W01, W02 or W03.

Had a look on Wikipedia and the chassis looks to be that of a RA107 or RA108 - so it was a proper frankenstein show car,

RA108. Been discussed for 3 years now from time-to time. really don't get it why they keep it really.

Doesn't look as bad as W03, which was probably the ugliest stepped nose of the year. Maybe we won't see Mercedes AMG Dolphin this time

It is fate that it will be named after an weirdly nosed animal.

The step in the nose doesn't seem to be as big as last year, I think it's the W04.
