I'm still maintaining that 5th in the race will be a good result, and a podium would be an amazing result.

Cautiously optimistic!

If they have the same program as in 2012, we'll have a decent idea of whats going to happen after FP2. The long runs on option at the end of the session are a great barometer of what's going to happen during the race.

I'm still maintaining that 5th in the race will be a good result, and a podium would be an amazing result.

Cautiously optimistic!

It depends on how far away they are for me. A 5th when the leader is a minute ahead of us is junk.

1 second per lap slower than the leader is not too bad when you consider where the team were.

My prediction is Lewis Hamilton will get pole around here. Have to wait till Sepang to see where teams are anyway.

If they struggle to make Q3 I am going to stay WELL AWAY from this place! haha

We might need some stand by doctors, if that happens. I am hoping Mercedes win the Race.

For some reason, out of all the top teams this team seems the most unpredictable to me. All I can say is top 5 team - no clue where.

Id say McLaren, they don't understand their car yet, so could go either way for them, assuming fundamental pace is there

The if buts maybes will all be over soon.

Best of luck for 2013 Mercedes - the forum will melt if the car is nowhere near the pace.

People are expecting too much, before testing people said they'd be happy with top 5's.
If Lewis or Nico are 5th on Sunday, people will probably say it's a failure

More the media I'll say. General feeling here is that 5th is a good start. Their are exceptions though :p

GO LEWIS, GO MERCEDES!

Anybody that genuinely believes that either Nico/ Lewis/Mercedes are destined to win, is at best deluded - there are going to be lot of competitive cars, each with a very good and determined driver.

But lets hope the car is reliable, team & strategy good and that we have a solid result.

And also that Lewis enjoys himself and is able to put on unfettered and exciting display of his World class skills.

Its only the first step on a long journey.

well said seano. I for one, am very excited about this weekend, just getting f1 back underway, but also - hopefully - seeing this car deliver on some of its testing promise...

Just seeing the close up pictures on the live coverage, that from wing is ridiculously complex.

Or just a happy, upbeat kinda person who loves F1, who dares to dream and likes to get carried away sometimes.

Does that really sound like such a terrible thing? Why does everything have to be so serious anyway? It is supposed to be fun you know.
I want Lewis to win, I think Lewis can win therefore I have convinced myself Lewis is destined to win. What you gonna do? shoot me? Lighten up.
Come back on Sunday night and call me deluded then if you want, I have a feeling you might be coming back to apologise.....

Whatever, best of luck Mercedes, I am hoping that both cars finish in the points and will be pretty pleased with that. Of course a win would be a bit nice.

Agreed. Did anyone manage to pick up on Brundle's comments around Turn 11 and 15 (re: aero and mechanical grip)?

My stream always went on and off when he spoke for some reason...

Watching LH onboard (joy of joys :) ) looked very smooth, well within the limits of the car, when pushing back would step out, noticed this after T6 ( I think?)/end of first sector, but there was good traction in the last sector although he wasn't using the width of the track. Looking at the timing screen, https://twitter.com/...0/photo/1/large , only time to find is in S1, and the car doesn't look 'hard' to drive, compared to Alonso hacking at the Ferrari wheel.

Rosberg is using the CI brake material that only Lewis uses. Maybe it would be wise for him to switch back.

@Sean I know its FP1, but honestly after tale of woes from last year even though I tried to be optimistic during testing, I must admit was afraid Q3 could be tricky. IF LH or NR put this car in the top 3 am taking a week off work!!!

and secretly am thinking they can (well not a secret any more since I blurted it out in a forum :) )

Listening to Ross B, it wasn't too bad. Did he say they were heavy? There were tyre grainings initially but that soon disappeared. LH lost about 0.3sec to Vettel in the first sector but was pretty close in the 2 remaining sectors.

LH didn't look like he was on the limit at all so I think there is still more to come, but then that applies to all the teams.

I think they can make row 2.

Does anyone have the lap times from the later runs? Merc stayed out longer than RBR, hopefully it's a sign of better tire wear.

Too early to say ... my hunch is that all the top teams are relatively heavy ie sandbagging ... this may not be such a close grid after all

This. On his fastest lap, I seriously thought he was coasting through the final sector to prep for the next lap, but then the timing lit up. No pushing, sliding, steering corrections, nothing. Calm and collected to get to P4? Not bad.
