Rosberg seems to be struggling a bit so far.

Rosberg 2nd, Hamilton 4th. Stop it, please.

He went off twice, that's why he said it.

According to Sky, Lewis did his fastest time so far (2nd place) on the 9th lap of a 10 lap stint. So there's definitely more in there.

Indeed. I was following live timing and I can confirm.

Looking good for Mercedes so far. Can't wait to see super soft runs.

Better for the problems to happen today at the end of the session after some good running.

Looks between us and the Ferrari for the second row in qualifying, then competing with Lotus for a top 5 finish in the race.

Agreed.

Though worrying that both problems might be gearbox related?

shame that we never got to see a hot lap from Lewis although it is more worrying that a team plagued by reliability last year didn't make it to the end of testing.

I take it there was no footage of lewis's off?

Sounds like the gearbox got borked and he had no engine braking going into the turn.

Sky pit lane commentator said Mclaren supplied ECU might be the reason. Pure speculation though.
If both cars have gear box issues, it might be a tense fly away races.

Lewis was on a hot lap and he was already a tenth or so up on vettels time thru the 1st sector but he went off track. I definitely saw that

They'll sort it out and be fine, I've no worries. Look how many laps they did in testing without failure, and as Jrg rightly pointed out, better now than during the race/quali/beginning of an fp session.

Hamilton would have beaten Vettel in FP2 had he put together that flying lap

I know Vettel could have gone way faster as well but fair chance of 2nd row I reckon

He was barely quicker in S1 and we all know how quick Red Bull are in S3 especially, I don't think he would of beaten him, but he would of been close to him, 2-3 tenths off max.

How was the long run pace? Rosberg seemed to still be on SS while others had to switch to medium, that might be a good sign.

Long runs looked good although in isolated testing conditions they can vary quite a lot from actual racing but that's par for the course.

Iam half expecting merc to qual on the medium tyre, the soft looks too much of a gamble.

Was quite long. He started off slowly and was getting quicker, which aligns with Brawn's comments that this year you have to be even more careful on the first couple of laps in the bigger picture that is the entire stint.

Hard to say - if he was 200 tenths up on Nico on S1 who ended only 4thenths behind Vettel then its possible considering Hamiltons main strength over Nico is S2. It possible but then again we would never know. I would say a tenth on either side.

Wonderful shooting #f1 @ T5.Proper quick corner with little run-off. #redbull nailed-on, #Mercedes quick, #Mclaren looks nervy & difficult.

Not too bad again.

Why would they do that?
The SS is 1 sec faster than the medium.

I don't think we saw anyone go 1s quicker on them, without crawling around the warm up lap the soft's didn't even survive a full quick lap.

I think Hamilton was on for a 26.2-26.3, which for me is encouraging. What's worrying is that the Hamilton/Mercedes package, which looks like the second quickest, is around half a second off the pace!

...and their reliability today, with both cars suffering problems... Ouch.

I think he said beep? don't the drivers use the beep to change gears? so if there was a problem, that's what caused him to understeer off?
I also found it difficult to understand what he was saying.

Could be, will probably have to wait and hear it from Lewis or Brawn to get confirmation though.

Don't think its half a second. I don't think it is calculable atm, either. BUT, let's assume it is 0,5s, that's not bad at all. In fact, it would still be great news, as a start to the season. It really is impressive, so far. The long runs were pretty encouraging, and that is more important than anything else atm. So far so good, still an FP to go, and then qualy.

I think LH was going to be much closer than that, but then we will never know what today's outcome could have been.
Toto said the cars have had much mileages. Nico had a gear box problem and LH had a diff(?) issue and nothing to worry about.

The regret I have today was Merc would not have been able to gather valuable data for LH on SS an LH would probably have benefitted from completing a hot lap on those tyres.

I am fairly confident Merc are pretty good shape considering how far back they are. They have certainly bettered most expectations. The race pace was very competitive as well. So no, I don't think RB are going to walk it. Merc still has rich development scope in that car so it is all to play for.

Who would have thought Merc will be in this enviable position.

The Sky pit lane reporter said LH had difficulty leaving the pit and that he didn't do a burn-off.

Both LH and NR has ran max stints with the SS tires. Its about all the data needed. Nobody will run more than 3-5 laps with the super softs, its going to be more like 2-3, and its going to be a qualy tire, and then shoved into the bin. What I don't understand though, is why on earth Pirelli selected this compound to be ran this weekend? Seems to be unusable. On the other hand, it may not even be used in qualy and the race as things stand now.

Guys, I've said I'm encouraged and positively surprised by their pace
I'm sticking to that mentioned half a second, and as a fan of the sport, it's depressing that what looks like the second best package, is that far off.

Watching live-timing (with lapses of concentration though), I got the impression the Red Bull was more consistent, and still a little quicker on the long runs.

...but I'm in a very good mood over Mercedes :)

If it rains in Q you mean? Yeah, no-one will really want to run the options.

I think 11th - 14th place are the best options. I think teams like McLaren can benefit and best Mercedes with this stratgey.

I think the ferrari is also a threat if fp1 is anything to go by . At least massa is and I can't help but think fernanndo has a couple of tenths on him. One should keep an eye in them.

Its funny though. If u had asked me 8 hrs ago I would gladly have accepted 3rd row and chewed your hands off, now anything other than 2nd row will be disappointing. .....is that being greedy ??

I do not expect any Ferrari to be a real threat to LH in qualy. I expect at least a 2nd row for one of the Mercs, long runs looked good even at testing. What I am not sure about is how good compared to RB, Lotus and Ferrari. I am hoping for great racing conditions on Sunday as this will go a long way to actually see how good the car is.

Rain is lottery and results are inconclusive.
