I do not expect any Ferrari to be a real threat to LH in qualy. I expect at least a 2nd row for one of the Mercs, long runs looked good even at testing. What I am not sure about is how good compared to RB, Lotus and Ferrari. I am hoping for great racing conditions on Sunday as this will go a long way to actually see how good the car is.

Rain is lottery and results are inconclusive.

Long runs were not good IMO. They didn't do many fast laps actually, seems like there was a lot of traffic. Rosberg had a lot of laps in the 37s and none in the 32s.

Merecedes are in the mix

well done to the team going from nearly 2secs off to perhaps less than 0.5 (as things look so far I still think ham for pole)

Well tbh (i'm biased a bit) but Lotus looked really good in race pace similar to RBR (both laping easly in 1:32 and low 1:33). Hard to say anything about Ferrari (1:37 then 1:32 then 1:34 and 1:31, and again 1:36). Mercedes might be a little slower on long pace, but with such disadvantage they won't be overtaken

To quote Ross Brawn,

We had a very good day today until the last five minutes of the second session.

Hamilton

I'm happy with where we are and to see Nico in third place on the timesheets shows that we're pretty competitive.

and Rosberg

That was an interesting day for us. There are a lot of new things to learn with the car and we made some good progress over the day. We can certainly be happy with our testing programme when you compare where we came from last year.

Good vibes from the team so things are looking good.

“It was a really good day, a surprisingly good day, and really positive. Nico did a great job, I didn’t get a good time on my lap because I locked up and went wide, but generally it’s been really positive.

“We’re not massively off the Red Bulls, which is incredible, really incredible, and just shows what a great job all the guys back at the factory have done. Obviously there’s been a couple of issues, which we’ll work hard to fix, but I don’t think it’s anything the team can’t fix.

“The Red Bull is massively quick, as it always is, they’ve obviously been sandbagging the whole time in winter as expected, and all of a sudden they’ve pulled out a lot of time. But I don’t feel we’re miles away. They’ve gone from being really far away to being not far away from Red Bull, and that’s really impressive.”

My god, bib again?? This season is EXACTLY like 2011! Hamilton had a broken bib in Australia then as well!

Watch as Rosberg punts Hamilton off the road in Canada. A few races later Hamilton is going to start getting impatient from Vettel's ridiculous fortune (5 rockets in a row!!!) and will start crashing into everything with 4 wheels. We're going to finish the year pretty strong and will be primed to make a nice run at 2014  .

All seems positive. It sounds like Hamilton maybe matched red bull without the problem. I think everyone would be looking at these times differently if they had. It's a huge leap for Mercedes who seem to be the closest challengers to red bull.

Lewis not the only Merc to crash today, web server seems to be overloaded again too.

Interesting comments from Lewis, seems his expectations are rising.

Based on testing and fp1&2 looks a better car than the McLaren, as much as you can't read too much into it, the McLaren reminds me slightly of the f2012.

Obviously conserved about the failures it has to be said

Rosberg went from a 1:27.3 on mediums to a 1:26.3 on Super Softs, but he was balked a bit by Maldonado. If he can improve a second on those tires, Hamilton would drop down to a 1:25.8.

I doubt a full second improvement is the norm (no matter what Pirelli says), 'cause not many improved by that amount. I rather think Rosberg's flyer on the primes was so-so, and when his lap on the option were better, the improvement was as big as one second.

He believes they are close to the RB. I think some of us suspected that in qually at least, but what about the race pace?
Please let no there be rain tomorrow and Sunday...

He is an idiot. A very fast, emotional, highly strung idiot who's very entertaining for so that reason.

Without veering off topic too far, my friend was in JB's class all through school, she said that he was a lovely sweet but ultimately rather dim child who was only interested in racing. I think we should lower our expectations of these drivers and realise them for what they are. Thorough bred racers with little going on between the ears other than the ability to drive a car at a ridiculous speed around the track. There are exceptions to this obviously but I guess they just prove the rule...

Racing is 90% head, so the saying goes. No reason to think racing drivers are any less intelligent than the next guy, a farmer, plumber or a stock trader.

Hehe, look at the cleaned out gravel. :)

Car is good on the tyres apparently according to Autosport's Edd Straw. He called it a silver Lotus. He's putting it down to Mike Elliott, recruited last year from Lotus/Renault, he was their cheif of aero, and that car too was very compliant with the tyres.

Not sure where he's getting that from. Look at the longer run from Rosberg compared to Raikkonen. Not even close, even though that doesn't mean everything.

I have a feeling in the race, it'll be Lotus chasing Red Bull with Mercedes fighting Ferrari.

He said it by looking at the pattern of the laps compared to Grosjean's long fast run.

Maybe. I'm not really seeing it.

Rosberg had a lot of 'bogey' laps, so its hard to tell a pattern, but time-wise, Grosjean looked almost a second faster a lap during that run.

I've had it confirmed that Mercedes are still running the fully interlinked passive suspension this year. Its been on the car since 2011

Craig Scarborough ‏@ScarbsF1
Merc's interlinked suspension, links left-to-right for roll and front-to-rear for pitch (dive). Its totally passive and legal

Good in that the car clearly has pace albeit looks a bit of a rough diamond both in terms of performance and reliability, certainly better than expected.

Not so good if anyone's dreaming of titles because its clearly no RedBull.

Just had a look on Lewis' twitter. He did a Q&A this morning after practice. He stated in one of his replies that he is aiming for top 5 tomorrow.

3rd or 4th would be extremely impressive for this team I feel.

Mercedes AMG F1 have made a big step forward that's granted, will they be able to develop their car trough out the season at the same rate of a top contender? Surely they got everything to do so, lot of brains at the factory, raised budget and the lewis Hamilton effect. For the first race, GP win be out of reach on pure race pace, but it's Melbourne so who knows. Definitely a very good start for 2013 !! I'll be very happy with the 2 drivers in top 6

Let's see how qually goes but top 6 doesn't look far-fetched, which means we can tick the "minimum happy level" most of us had a couple of months ago. For me it was both Mercs in the top 10 and closer to the front runners than before, so they'll probably over-deliver on my expectations. An impressive turnaround :smoking:

If they can develop this car well through the year (and they must have a bit more headroom than RBR have got with Newey's uber-perfected beast) I wonder how long before they're being called the 'Dream Team'?
