It's a non structural piece that hides the step from the nose to the chassis.

It looks like an improvement over their previous challengers, although the nose is similar:

The nose surely looks a little out of place. Apart from that it reminds me of the double floor design from TorroRosso.

Exhaust area looks similar to Ferrari F138? Did Costa designed it together with his old colleagues? :)

Looks like the nose doesn't quite fit the chassis. Simply a launch nose or chassis I guess?

Read Gary's analysis. He should wait until they hit the track before spitting his stuff.

Surely the fact that this car is designed around the Coanda exhaust which the other car wasn't should provide a lot of the change? It's quite fundamental to go from no blown diffuser to a blown one. We'll see though, the biggest worry for Merc is whether or not the car eats tyres like it was sometimes prone to doing.

I'm sure Gary Anderson knows that he has no real clue about the performance of a car just from glancing at it, but he has to write something that sounds vaguely believable because that's what the BBC pay him for.

GA gives me the impression of someone who's annoyed he's no longer in F1, he seems unduly scathing and harsh on certain teams. IRC there were a few times last year he would be hammering Lewis/McLaren strategy amongst others during the race, only to eat his words come the end when they won.

I respect his viewpoints and opinions but I do remember to engage the bias filter!! Then again I do that for anyone speaking in F1

He's entitled to express his opinion. I'd rather he give his view now than wait for the testing to avoid being wrong.

Of course he is scathing. Brackley F1/Merc have employed/approached just about every bit of F1 technical personnel and haven't asked him!

Does Anderson have a point with regard to the nose. I thought the aim was to keep air flow disruption away from the wheels and the general technique to stop this is to either have a flat nose or ridges down the side of the nose.

Surely the curved nose profile will only make this issue worse.

Isn't he the guy who said that the MP4-27 was doomed?

No, he didn't. IIRC he said the car was solid rather than spectacular - which it was - that the launch exhaust spec looked so simple that it obviously wasn't final - which it wasn't - and that he was surprised about the low nose because he didn't think it was the best possible solution - and in fact, McLaren changed to a high nose in the early part of the season.

The top image is the W03 ;) Downwash exhaust and step nose give it away. The holes in the cooling section were the DDRS tubing and the lower hole was a way the team exploited being able to drive more air centrally that they can't now as they've lowered the gearbox/crash structure

That cooling exit is exceptionally low right over the diffuser edge. Have not see it this low before.

Amazing how all those highly paid technical heavy weights hired by Merc could not even realise this.

F1 tech has moved on considerably since Mr Anderson was last involved in F1.

Not related to the W04, but I thought this was due to an FIA inspection asking them to change what they were doing with (iirc) the floor... It was around 3 races in, shortly after that was when JB started having trouble heating the front tyres in Quali.

Could be wrong, it was a while ago.

I feel more confident now that i know all those highly paid technical heavy weights are at Merc. The car will surely be the top of the class.
