What's the problem with Ricciardo?  Any Englishman would immediately realise that parts of the word are silent.

Yes they are. They're much worse.

No, of course they aren't.  But I was amused by ITV's cycling presenter in the recent Vuelta d'Espana coverage, who asked studio guest Jens Voigt, the veteran German cyclist, how to pronounce his name.  Was 'Voy-te'?  No, said Jens, it is pronounced 'Vocht'.  OK, said Gary, but the very next evening introduced him as 'Voy-te'.  You can't help some people.

But having said that, I recall drivers having to change their names to accommodate US TV commentators (eg Arie Luijendijk who became Arie Luyendyk) and I am certain that non-English speaking commentators (and I include the US in that) have mangled British names like Coulthard.

But as ever on this BB, the Brits are of course the real villains of the piece.... :well:

Why did I just read that?

In other news, it was quite amusing last night when Eddie Jordan was captioned as a former F1 driver...

Think its called "Race Centre" if you're online, Race Control from the TV feed, never tried it from the TV feed.

Eddie Jordan as podium interviewer: "the championship is still alive!"

Eddie Jordan as BBC pundit: "the championship is over."

It doesn't get much worse than that. Have BBC really gone downhill that much.

As an obsessive "no commentary" option fan, I am sorry to tell you that "no commentary" is only available on the Pit lane or On board option on the Sky Red \button. Totally unacceptable when SkyF1 costs so much

On BBC we learned EJ thinks the French national anthem is called the The Marchioness so there was that.

David Croft is terrible and possible makes more mistakes than Legard did, for me we need to get DC back with Brundle and have Crofty just for Practice sessions where he interacts with people on Twitter.

I thought BBC coverage was very good and Suzi Perry has still got it, looks wise, never great with F1 knowledge. Eddie Jordan needs to go in a mental hosiptal and DC has great knowledge and can relate to the viewers.

I think she looks awkward during the live stuff. Lee Mckenzie seemed quite comfortable with presenting the practice session live.

Agree about David Croft.

I'm a bit surprised that Sky allows Natalie Pinkham to dress like that in an Arab country. Skimpy top and miles of leg on show.

Typical British "**** your culture" attitude.

"Talk loudly - they'll understand!"

I'd call it "freedom".

I'm more surprised how Brundle behaves in recent races - seems to have "only I'm important" attitude.

So you'd rather they adhere to an oppressive aspect of an outdated culture? The UAE isn't all smiles und sunshine with human rights records past and present, but they're much more liberal than some of their backward neighbours...

Well, you can be culturally sensitive. I don't think anyone's calling for the niqab. But, who cares. And who is even surprised. It's F1/Sky. It's not and is never going to be highbrow.

Yes. He made a snide remark about Eddie Jordan today, who then behaved admirably, and made Brundle look like a bit of an arse, again.

We see with him a lot. As far back as Australia he cut in front of Lee McKenzie to interview Jenson Button and then strung the interview out longer than necessary.

Well to play devil's advocate, part of that "only I'm important" mentality may rest with the principle of "only I'm live". I'm almost certain I've heard him mutter along those lines before; not everyone he's competing with, or jumping in front of (always a little unpleasant regardless imo) are broadcasting live nor have the prospect of having to run up to the commentary box for the start of the race when their window of opportunity ends. Quite a few are probably, but not everyone.

I mean, I hate to say it, but I don't watch BBC coverage much anymore so I don't know whether they show Eddie's grid walks "uncut" as it were, when the race is not shown live; if they do then Martin's actions will look quite ugly today. Otherwise, I'm pretty sure Martin is well aware that the BBC were not live today, as was the case back in Australia. May not excuse being rude or bullying, but if you've only got a set, very limited amount of time and you know millions are watching you doing it, I'd almost forgive people for not really wanting to say "no-no, after you, I'll stand and wait..."

How long does it normally take for grand prix higlights to become available on iPlayer? It's been three hours since today's were transmitted, which seems staggeringly slow to me. Unless Auntie Beeb uses a 28k modem to upload them, or something?

(again : P) Who knows the name of the music Sky used in its nice 'highlights' video montage and played at the very end of the Abu dhabi GP broadcast ? (a music with oriental tones and no lyrics, just female voices) ?

Agree, Brundle seems to getting a over inflated ego over the last few months, also think his grid walks have gone down in standard compared to the old days...is he under instruction from Sky bosses to interview the likes of Vettel on the grid for the hundredth time of the weekend? ...zzzz

Out of all the presenters and commentators DC wins hands down. Thoughtful, down to earth, speaks sense. He builds a knowledgeable bridge between the F1 circus and us the fans/viewers. Brundle has got way too big for his boots!

Is there anyone from south Africa here?Apparently Supersport is switching from the BBC commentary team to Sky next year, any word on that?I have noticed that Pinkham does the driver interviews before the start of the race but the BBC team take over, which I found odd.Personaly i hope so,I have missed Martin brundle alot and Ben Edwards to too shouty for me!Though I wish they could poach D.C though!

On a side note, reading this thread makes me realise how Supersport has spoiled us rotten with F1 coverage!Poor Brits!Live and interupted of all  races for the last 15 years?Too bad the sport does not connect alot with the continent it could have been massivley popular.

The Martin-Eddie moment on the grid was bad for Martin IMO. I have a lot of respect for him, but that just made him look like a petulant child.

How much of that is due to Brundle feeling that Eddie 'ended' his (Martin's) F1 career too soon. I seem to recall MB making comments along those lines that he should have had at least one more season with Jordan only to be booted out in favour of Ralf Schumacher and Fisichella for 1997.

This shocked me. Always liked Brundle and initially I thought it was all part of his tough-man camaraderie that he uses sometimes. It was quickly evident that wasn't the case. I don't know if Eddie heard him but was very accommodating to let him go.

What was the problem with Natalie Pinkham in Abu Dhabi.

It's normal dress for Europeans in Abu Dhabi !

The locals have no problem with it.

It's amazing the opinions that are given on here with no foundation of knowledge or even common sense.
