Guys after seeing the other cars, what you think about the size of the 28's sidepods? Don't they look big now compared to the others?

Yeah, very wide from above but the coke bottom area is seriously tiny I feel the 28 is getting the best of both worlds.

It also looks like McLaren have trimmed the top surface of the side-pods, the area that blends into the airbox cooling fin region.

Very true  they won't add performance until the last week, but that won't stop us commenting on every lap!

Thats if they complete lots of laps! Every year we spend most of the day wondering when they'll come out on track and when they do we rejoyce....for 3 laps lol. Still, I love winter testing! We will see what exhaust solution McLaren will run!

Let the game begin  It looks like McLaren have been the only team that opted for pull-rod suspension set-up at the front. Hopefully, everything will be fine with the car. No reliability problems are welcome but if it happens it is better than having reliability problems in testing rather than during the season :)

Ferrari ran it for all of last year and have it again this year.

I wouldn't worry.
There may be some small issues regarding the best setup settings, but they would have done their homework in the simulator and it really shouldn't take more than a couple days of Jerez to get it sorted. Especially since that is what this test is really for.
There may be some problem with reliability, as I have read somewhere that pushrod is a little stronger. But again, Ferrari were fine with it, and so were RedBull after implementing it on the rear of their cars.

Don't believe the stories about last year. There were many problems with the F2012, but the pull rod front wasn't one of them. The reason I believe the other teams didn't go for it is that it requires quite a bit of a redesign for an aerodynamic and CoG gain, but a small one.
McLaren had the time for it, and so did Ferrari when they stopped F150 development early, but most other teams didn't or don't have enough money to have it done for this year, and they stuck with push rod which isn't a massive disadvantage. I think they will do for 2014 though as I think it will have even bigger benefits then.

The car's pace is not decided by the size of its sidepod thats for sure. MP4-27 was not the smallest car either and still did things.

After the launch of the other cars, the McLaren looks a bit underwhelming. Let's see what stuff they add at the first test!

No worries. The same thing was said last year and McLaren ended up with the fastest car.

The 28 will be heavily revised coming out of the garage tomorrow than it looked at the launch

Not necessarily. Those 'heavy' revisions are likely to present themselves during later tests.

Most likely. Like last year where hugely promoted RB package was introduced, not everyone noticed how significant changes were at McLaren.

And that annoyed me at the time, because I was looking for some good clear pictures of the upgrades and there were hardly any, as the press fawned over the RB8's very visible change.

You need not to pay too much attention to the upper elements of the side pods - look down at the base of the side pods, both on the Red Bull, Ferrari and McLaren, this is tiny and very aggressively waisted at the rear tappering into the gearbox. The upper elements of the sidepods are shaped thus to arrest the airflow and guide it into the exhaust downflow - as long as it does this well, I would imagine its size is not that important.

Funniest thing was that there were so many people back then talking about how McLaren should shut up, stop PRing and do the real job but very few of those caught that.

Actually, increased upper planform area will increase the amount of downwash over the sidepod.

It will look the same as it did at the shakedown (i.e. USA/BRA front wing and turning vanes).

We shall see! I think there will be a small revision at the back of the car but we will find out in a few hours, and on that note Im going to bed!

Very intricate detailing on those turning vanes. The only thing similar I have seen are the split in the Red Bull version.

I wouldn't read too much in that. Especially after like 2h test, when most of the teams didn't even install most of new bits

The McLaren and the Ferrari are the only (top) cars that are visibly different than last year.....

Thats odd, Anderson says Red Bull is the only care he can't tell a difference to, other than the nose...but thats OT so lets forget it.

Sorry! I meant the McLaren and Ferrari to be the only top cars that are really different from last year!

Lotus only has the ramp exhaust. Mercedes a few details, and Red Bull looks exactly the same.

The Sauber ofcourse has also changed a lot.

Very intricate detailing on those turning vanes. The only thing similar I have seen are the split in the Red Bull version.

Caterham also has a split in them.

totally agree, looking at where mclaren where last year, and the updates they did to this year, its dificult not to get hopes up a bit, biggest worry is frontsuspension, if they can get that dialed in and offcourse the drivers, but the car :smoking:

This car really reminds me of the 25, maybe because of the front. I know the back has nothing like it.

So, Autosport live timing:
15:04 Worth noting that while McLaren experienced another fuel pump failure today, that part has been redesigned following its similar troubles towards the end of 2012.

Don't start with this shit, already. Get it sorted, now.

this car or the Red Bull will be the one to beat... apart from the fastest time, the consistency of the fast times in a stint is the most impressive so far...

As an engine manufacturer we have to have a lot of input into the design of the engine to get the engine right for the chassis. If you are simply a customer you take what the engine supplier gives you, but as we are a complete team, our group has to start to work on the new car much earlier than other teams as we have to understand what sort of engine we want to have for the car. That parallel development is crucial.

Button fastest on the first day, that must be a good sign. Although they might work harder on qualifying performance, as this was his weak spot last season.
