Exciting time, but i reckon most teams could get around that benchmark. Question is was it effortless? Judging by Macca history in testing Im prepared to bet it was and they can go much faster. :)

Worrying talk from Ross for 2014?

I think your taking that slightly out of context.

What he means is the factory team can design the engine and car around each other whereas a customer has to design their car around the engine, which can possibly lead to more compromises.

Button fastest on the first day, that must be a good sign. Although they might work harder on qualifying performance, as this was his weak spot last season.

actually good point... unlike last year when they never ran on low fuel all winter...I'm pretty sure the 1.18 was lowish fuel and might signal an adjustment to testing program with "he who must not be named" gone

This is the speech given to Lewis Hamilton clearly. More concerned about 2013 right now though.

Agreed.

Knowing what we know about how Macca go about testing, that there's program which they stick to, and how last season they did A LOT of short 3-lap runs like this for whatever reason, it seems highly unlikely that they said 'lets abandon our testing program and baseline fuel loads' and do a glory run'. They just wouldn't deviate from program, especially as they lost half a days running, they'd be trying to catch up. And we can say with some assurance that the program wouldn't include a low-fuel run on day one.

However, also knowing that the Pirelli's this year are supposed to be a bit faster, and that all the cars should be MUCH faster than the 2012 cars under the same rules after an additional year of development, but also the laptime effect of restricted DRS, we can say that we know... almost nothing about the picture this year based on today's results.

It made me smile to look at Jenson at the top of the times, but I won't fool myself into believing it means anything.

So, it is not positive news. They should listen to their customers and design another engine suitable to the custormer cars' requirements :)

This what I fear it might happen in 2014.

On other news, today we could have got more laps, but at least it looks like we have speed. Let's not get overenthusiastic.

McLaren should probably learn how to manufacture engines...

Or they should change to other engine partners.

Anyone else notice the "Vodafon" with the missing e? Different nose configurations? - or is it last year's nose/FW with a different logo size mixing with the new bulkhead?

A couple of observations from testing today. Not sure what to read from them but..

1. No FloVis..... I think I saw some photos from Red Bull that had FloVis all over the rear wind, but I don't believe McLaren had any.

2. The car wasn't covered in sensors. I was expecting sensors all over the car, at least for the first few hours.

Perhaps both of these were down to the loss of time with the Fuel Pump. Interesting tho.

Mark.

I'm very encouraged i have to say, not by the time set, but by the developments added since last year. Raised front, which obviously is the way to go(more clean air), changed front suspension to accommodate, sealing of the driveshaft to ensure quality of the airflow, changed upper rear wishbone attachment for better airflow(rb solution) and last it looks as if they flattened the inner elements of the frontwing, again probably for not to interrupt airflow to the rearwing. Instead they increased angle of attack on the outer elements of the frontwing, in front of the wheels, where the air is dirty already. Offcourse this is just my armchair opinion.

they used both flowvis and sensors, and that is actually a good sign. Since testing is so limited everything is down to correlation. And mac fortunately seem pretty good at that.

anyone else think there is trouble ahead between merc and mac. Judging by mw's pretty harsh comment and seen in the light of mercedes resent hunt for mac engineers. Add to that, that mercedes is now run by lauda who don't give a shit. With norbert at least there where mutual respect between the companies and gentleman agreements. I think its safe to say it is gone now

Aha. Thanks. I trawled the photos but obviously missed them.

I agree, the presence or lack of either of these isn't necessarily good or bad. I was simply surprised I hadn't seen them on the first day.

Yeah, I have a feeling McLaren won't use Merc engines beyond the current agreement.

Of course, I'm basing that on absolutely nothing...

Yup. I never bought the company line that even with a Mercedes Works Team, McLaren would continue to get equal footing. While i'm sure thats mostly the case now, I would guess thats going to change with the new Engine Regs. The problem is, it's probably too late for McLaren to change for 2014. I'm not sure there is even a good alternative at this point. All the other engines are tied up and I doubt McLaren would want to share anyway (ignoring the current arrangement). So it would have to be a supplier that currently doesn't provide to F1 e.g. Honda, Cosworth etc.

Front of the car looks much better on track than it did at the launch, that is one fat backside however.

That aside, seems fast and smooth for its first day ontrack.

Test report :: Jerez day one

The morning’s running was compromised by a mechanical fuel-pump issue, which cost a couple of hours’ track-time, but the problem was quickly rectified and the team was able to run productively for the remainder of the afternoon.

Jenson spent the first part of the day’s programme running a lower-lip rake to complete some aero mapping work. The end of the day saw the team evaluate the effects of a series of mechanical set-up changes, using both the Supersoft and Hard Pirelli tyres.

Both the aero mapping and the balance changes fell in line with the team’s pre-test expectations. Jenson set his fastest time of the day on the Hard compound.

What’s next?

Sergio Perez gets his first opportunity to drive a Vodafone McLaren Mercedes car tomorrow (Wednesday). The knock-on effects of this morning’s fuel-pump issue mean that he will begin his day by continuing today’s initial aero and balance checks.

The aim for tomorrow afternoon is to conduct a series of longer runs – possibly incorporating live pitstops into the mix if the team is satisfied with the day’s initial progress.

if you are reading from that time anything lul. I believe all cars except Marusssia and Caterham could go into 1:18 easly on these tyres. Last year they had 1:18, and these old cars did improve by about 1sec over the season (at LEAST!). I believe all top teams could go low 1:17 in jerez

YET! it is good sign. They are quick out of the box. But it isnt anything odd, they had good basic, it would be hard to go full retard with good car

DRS can only be used in the designated zones this year throughout practice, qualifying and race - so there is nothing to learn from trying to push DRS use to it's limit with fast corners etc. If people use DRS they will be using it in the same place this year.

this car or the Red Bull will be the one to beat... apart from the fastest time, the consistency of the fast times in a stint is the most impressive so far...

we do not know fuel loads of course

A couple of days ago I said that the championship fight will be between Button & Vettel.

I think that's the most important thing, I was a bit worried about the pull-rod front suspension which they didn't have any experience of.

If the simulation is correct, they should be able to develop this car very quickly.

Maybe we "only" have to worry about reliability and pitstops and strategy decisions. :)

That's my biggest worry. Operationally, I think the team will be a lot better this year. I hope.

Mark Webber on JBs time;
"It's strong," he said. "I don't know what compound of tyre he was on but it's not a slow lap around here. A 1:18.8 at Jerez on Pirellis is a pretty handy time."

@McLaren_Soul: Button says he intends to stay at Jerez all week to support his new team-mate, Sergio Perez, who is about to take his 1st drive in a McLaren
