It seems like he sits very high in the car. Is not this strange?

Funny you mention this; Perez is not entirely happy with the seating position and there are adjustments being made to the seat.
On the whole though, a good day, all about 'familiarisation' with car and systems.

@SChecoPerez: Very happy with our fist Day!! A very busy day, good program and getting there with the adaptation

@SomersF1: McLaren MP4/28 - Exhaust Channel, notice the options available either side & above the tailpipe for releasing airflow http://t.co/B36QcUWY

I am so lost at what I'm meant to be looking at? yes I see the little panel above the outlet but either side? To me that just look like a panel to take out so they can get at something inside rather than swapping exhaust position?

I found a picture of Button from Jerez 2010. I remember the same things were said at that time about Button's seating position etc. Maybe it is all McLaren procedure who knows? :)

That was due to the chassis not being designed with someone of Buttons height in mind, so it was always a compromised seating position throughout the year just so that he would fit in the car. With Perez being shorter than Jenson, there should be scope to get lower in the car if that is his preference.

Some kind of measuring device. You can also see the wires on the left side.

Must be measuring the flow from the hot air exiting the rear of the body work. Odd looking device however.

GA on Mclaren:
"I had a long chat with McLaren sporting director Sam Michael over lunch and they are pretty happy with where they are at the moment. The car is responding to changes and they have some new parts coming for the final two days of the final test at the beginning of March. They were pleased with Sergio Perez's first run on Wednesday - he was competitive and consistent, and Sam was admiring the narrow sidepods and more aggressive undercut on the Red Bull. I've been watching the McLaren on the track and it has more understeer than any other car, on a consistent basis. Sam said he wasn't worried - that it was caused by tyre graining on this aggressive track surface - but I think they'll have to have a look at that because there are other cars out there with much less understeer. The other worry for McLaren is the fuel-pump failure that affected Jenson Button on day one. That was a new part aimed at solving the problem that cost Lewis Hamilton victory in Abu Dhabi last year. It's a Mercedes part, but it's odd that it's now failed twice on a McLaren and not on any other Mercedes-engined cars."

I think understeer is easier to fix than oversteer so it looks like we have planted rear-end at least which is important for Button's driving style

Thank you really. I especially like the one from formule1.nl because they aren't made in the pitlane. I want to see the car at the track with highspeed under high aerodynamik load.

But on the other side the pit lane pictures are better to see the details at the car (even if there are not that many details at the first test)

Can it be due to less front downforce? If I remember right, last year there was excess downforce on the front and team had to make adjustments to balance it with the rear downforce. And this year, team raised the nose in order to allow more airflow to reach rear part. And considering the team has relatively less experience with high noses, may it be because of lack of sufficient downforce on the front? Or is it just setup thing?

I certainly prefer the look of the car with Lucozade rather than Maximuscle on the rear wing.

Last year (or at least at the beginning of the year) the teams struggled with oversteer. The ban of the EBD decreased the downforce at the rear. But if the car understeers now means that they MAYBE found back the downforce at the rear. MAYBE they got the downforce from the improved exhaust solutions which they brought to the races over the year. Another possibility is that they lost downforce at the front but this is very unlikely even if the higher nose costs a bit of Downforce. The third possibility is that they lost mechanical grip due to the change to the pull rod. I'm really not sure but i think Ferrari struggled with the pull rod too (at the start of the season / tests). Some wrote that the pull rod is the only weakness of the f2012.

Well there are many possibilties why the car has understeering now.

Quote James Allen

"After topping the times on Monday, Jenson Button ended the day in seventh. McLaren chose to concentrate of long, fuel laden runs in the afternoon with Button completing eighty-three laps in the process."

Test report :: Jerez day three

Jenson returned to the cockpit this morning to complete his second day of running at Jerez, concluding his programme for this test.

As in previous days, the morning kicked off with further aero evaluation work – conducted over a number of shorter runs. The team then ran through a suite of larger mechanical changes in order to understand key changes in set-up – these were fully evaluated over a series of longer runs throughout the afternoon.

The team also conducted a number of live pitstops during the afternoon’s running.

Jenson made a precautionary stop on the track during the session’s dying minutes, and the car was recovered safely.

What’s next

Sergio returns tomorrow for the final day’s running. As before, he will conduct a mix of aero and mechanical work, also running through a similar series of larger mechanical changes in order to better understand the set-up characteristics of MP4-28.

Button is said to prefer a car with a touch of understeer - it may be on purpose. An understeering car would also (I think) be easier on its tires.

Well not really. If you suspected you had a loose wheel nut, they would make you stop as a precaution.

Does anyone know if that is an air inlet just below the airbox intake? If it is an inlet, what could it be for and could the position of the drivers head (e.g. look up/down) influence the flow of air into that inlet? I suppose what I'm getting at is if teams are pursuing passive DRS, what their solution could be.

Yes, it is an inlet for cooling, it has been there since 2008 I believe. McLaren said that there are other areas in which more performance can be found rather than working for passive DRS which is complex to make it really work.

I'm feeling extremely confident for some reason, the car looks good and I'm excited to see how Jenson gets on this season and the new young charger :) Bring it on! Can't wait to see McLaren battling on track, maybe even with an old friend....

It's still early days in testing, maybe only in Barcelona we may have a clearer look.

Well i'd say it wasn't too bad a first day for Sergio. 81 laps in and no offs. He can only improve from her on in.

I'm not sold on the fact that most believe Sergio will struggle to match Jenson this year or perform well for that matter. I think he's young & ambitious enough that it might not effect him this year. I think if he struggles at all it will be next year, after he has the winter to truly analyze where he came from & where he's st now. Add on top of that the new car could pose issues with not just Sergio but other drivers as well. I suspect we'll see him do rather well this year.

He needs the car to be competitive to do it. Let's hope we are as competitive as last year minus the reliability and pit stop problems.
