With McLaren maintaining a low bulk head, Gary Anderson would be spinning in his grave (if he were dead).

On second look from front on it is clear that the bulkhead is significantly higher than it was in Brazil. Its the modest panel that throws the eyes off and the side on view looked low until you see the front on shot. Its very high.

They haven't, it's a modesty panel. At least that's what Scarbs says, and furthermore it looks very clear to me that the top surface of the chassis is absolutely flat.

I seem to remember Gary not liking the car at all last year, lets hope he doesn't like it again.

Yeah, do they really have a 'modesty panel'? I don't think so?

I think it's built into the nose-cone, laminates down the sides overlapping and hiding all the joins? You didn't think a modesty panel would be obvious did you?

The car looks gorgeous and very undercut at the rear, very undercut. The exhaust solution present may not even be the version they race at Melbourne.

Definately not the version they race at Melbourne.
May not even be the version they start testing with.

In terms of rear packaging it looks like McLaren are right there and perhaps even ahead of RBR (the RB8 of course). I'm quite impressed with the car. Yes it looks very similar to the -27, but that should be expected as the -27 was one of the benchmarks of 2012. So a very tidy, pretty car with interesting details.

I thought it had to be a separate piece of bodywork that is attached to the nose, not build in.

I don't think these modesty panels will just be bolted on, i think they will be built into the nose out of a much lighter construction. I doubt you will be able to see a visual joint between the nose and panel. Although they might have to keep VIPs from taking photo opportunities by perching on the nose. not that i expect that happens anyway.

I was hoping they would go without the scoops on the brakes.

Beautifully elegant car.
The launch versions of cars usually look best. No crap stuck all over them yet.

We said the same in 2006 when the 21 was launched...rear packaging wise I think we are still alot more cludded around the end of the coke bottle, the Red Bull always looks so clean and open with big gaps to the diffuser and our car always seems to look so busy in the suspension area.

Yea, race wins mean nothing - that's why the 27 will not be shown at the 100th anniversary...

They very well may do, this is just the launch car.

Presentation was AWESOME really, I'm proud of this team!

Chassis looks quite different and it is a high chassis, new rear and front pull-rod suspensions, mirrors and some more interesting details at the rear. I can assure you this car will look much more different in Melbourne. I expect to see new front and rear wingsi new floor, tuning vanes, diffusor, new exhaust system and some changes in brake ducts etc..

Depends how it's constructed I guess, granted I haven't read the detail of the rules lately but as long as it confirms to the 'prescribed lay up' in the places where a chassis isn't allowed to be, how it's attached isn't mentioned is it? Nothing wrong with hiding the joins under a layer of paint?

Utter nonsense.

Just ask Nick Heidfeld whether his lack of race wins means nothing.

Or Nico Rosberg or Heikki Kovaleinen value theirs.

I agree with Clarkson, all the millions spent on refining the aero and they put that strip of plastic above the steering wheel.

That is why McLaren will always be hit and miss - there is no point in being in Formula 1 unless you are aiming for championships - that is the reason they lost Hamilton, Alonso....

Have fun this year...

Whitmarsh: This car is already quicker than the one that raced in Brazil last year

What else is the point of launching a new car (with almost no regulations changes)?

Well he could have said, it is as quick as last years but has enormous potential to unlock

hi (first post),

i think the car is more an evolution, which is good because they had maybe the fastest car at the end of 2012.

The car has a pullrod like some speculated earlier. They solved some "mistakes" they made at the old car, like a too low chassis.
The wings are not spectacular. for example the front wing is a old 2012er. And at the rear wing i expect something different at the tests. The upper flap which the car has today is very tiny, but this year DRS is less important and as you know the upper flap was much larger as there was no DRS.
The sidepods are the most spectacular thing at this car. I wonder if the side impact structure is in the upper leading edge?

If you don't think McLaren aim for championships you don't understand McLaren, on the other hand do you expect Caterham, HRT and Marussia are realistically aiming for championships or do you think there is no point them being in F1.

The only thing that worries me is the pull rod front, getting that right is critical, we all know how Jense doesn't like a car that isn't balanced, and it may be hard to get to grips with the pull rod front early days. Fingers crossed were on top of it.

From what I could see, the McLaren solution looks much more advanced than Ferrari's from last season, more sculpted into aero foils. I could be totally wrong though, im no engineer.

Looks like an RBR solution, looks very high and flattens out towards the wheel, but ahead of that, is sculpted and almost bent

It is a pull rod front suspension in the same way that last years Ferrari had front pull rod suspension instead of push rod
