Shame this thread can't now just be called V8 Supercars - it's all feels a bit negative.

Shhhh don't tell the mods, we're way off topic

At least JD and Norton are stumping up enough cash that we don't end up with more of that Pepsi/Castrol/Cat monstrosity

The Datsun's look less aero refined as the Ford and Holden do though. I know it's V8's, but if the engine is rumored to be a brick, does that car have to be too?

Two things:
- Not sure if our 'Nanny State' would approve of such a thing, or even if its legal (We have plain packaging cigarettes now and that sort of livery may be classified as advertising, regardless of if Winfield contributed any money).

Couldn't you guys have found a spare barrel for Roxon?

Might be one in the back of Paul Morris' Commodore.

Not the finest Red Bull livery ever seen IMO... seems to be a mess of different sponsors plastered all over the car.

I think people are more excited than they have been for years. No one knows how the grid will be come Adelaide. It could shift the paradigm like 2009 did in F1 and give a surprise champion or give a midfield team a long term run at the front.

Yeah i am actually going to watch this season for once. I really don't give a shit about the holden vs ford thing, but i think its gunna be interesting with nissan and merc in there + the new car. The only downside is going to be actually watching channel 7........

Those things look sweet.

Great job to SBR / Erebus.

Maybe every race team needs a passionate, no-nonsense, determined and purple-haired owner/patron

Not sure about that but I think we can safely say the Nissans are the worst looking of the 4 marques.

The rear wing on the Merc doesn't look great though, probably would've preferred it to be centrally mounted - this looks almost a bit of an afterthought.

HHA livery is pretty awful though - Irwin and SP Tools liveries far better imo...

The Merc looks great, all i hope for now is that it has a different distinct engine note to that of the Ford/Holden. Don't care about the Nissan.

Reports of the Datsuns lack of power seem a little premature! 4th fastest in first session, a quarter of a second off fastest. Fastest Ford a full second down and Merc 1.1 behind

The big guys are running to deltas though. FPR, HRT and 888 are mid-pack, or doing split programs.

Dont get carried away by a private practice session.
The time and money wasted on this media day really is a joke. Go back and do private testing at your own test track and learn something.
Though evidently they are having brake rotor dramas too.
And if that shows up at Winton they are in the diabolicals. Especially come Symons, Wanneroo and they would have a real problem at Mallala.

I don't think it's a waste of money. It is promoting V8SC, and there seems to be lots of interest in the new cars.
I do agree that we shouldn't take to much notice, it does have a rock'n'roll wrestling feel to it!

Well having just been at the track I have some doubts about this thread. Before the cars even went out the carpark was filling quickly. I don't know how many people were there but it was like being at a race day in the 90's. There were people everywhere despite being just a test day with questionable weather. V8's can certainly still pull a crowd.

As for the cars themselves, there was some interesting points. The Holden and Ford look and sound the same as last year around the track. Some of the drivers were working the wheel a bit in the corners more than normal, but I'm sure that is more to do with new cars and looking for a good set up after a long break. The new rules don't seem to have changed much in this regard.

The Nissan sounded mostly like a V8 supercar. They were only slightly different to the Ford and Holden (but no more than a Ford and Holden are different to each other) down the straight, just without the popping on the gear change. However, there was definitely a different noise from them under acceleration compared to the other two. Out of the corners they sounded more exhausty and less mechanical, almost like a car from the 80's. You could here this in the twisty bits out the back, but for most of the lap there was little difference. Kelly also had engine trouble early on, and both cars seemed to spend a lot of time in the pits compared to the others.

The Mercedes sounded very different. It sounded like someone replaced the tailpipe with a trumpet. Very loud and strong scream like a V12. In fact they sounded more like a V8 F1 on a warm up lap than a V8 supercar. Like the Nissan the Mercedes was very smooth on the gear changes. The gear changes sounded more like something from an onboard video or a computer game than the aggressive banging and popping of a Holden or Ford on the up change. Having said that, the Mercedes sounded like a war in the pit lane. Very very rough, like listening to fireworks. The sound of the Mercedes was the biggest surprise of the day, being easy to identify and hear from the other side of the track with its high pitched scream.

Apparently the Nissan's Engine problem was just a loose oil line? Maybe it was knocked off by a conrod?? :)

The Kelly Hold-ons sounded different to the other Holdens and to the Fords in previous years due to a different exhaust set up. Not sure what the difference was, but maybe that continues with the Nissan and can partly explain the sound?

Now we need some Jaguar XF-Rs and some BMW M5 sedans to join (cutting the numbers of Holdens, hopefully).

Also, I hope someone other than Whincup, Lowndes and 888 can win the championship. Hard enough seeing RBR keep winning in F1 without them dominating in V8s too....

Does anyone else found it out odd that Red Bull is sponsoring a Holden team? I would of thought they would sponsor Nissan due its connection with Infiniti?

Especially considering the relationship Red Bull has with Infiniti/Renault in F1.

Just noticed that there is a #88 testing. Since that has been Whincup's number when he wasn't wearing #1 I wonder what his alternate number will be.

The boys got a bit more serious this afternoon?

lap time session 2

in the 1.28s, can't remember the old cars times, I think it was a 1.30 or 31

The Nissan Insult again seems reasonable

The practice lap record time came from the Natsoft timing sheet.

I reckon it's a bit odd, but at the end of the day all these are different race teams, and we're essentially talking about an RB brand exercise when it comes to the sponsorship.

But there would be no surprises if RBR Aus switches to Nissans, if the experiment works

888 are the second Holden factory backed team.

Nissan would have to dangle a large carrot to make them move.

Both quadcam AFAIK, the Nissan V8 is derived from the engine they used in the GT-R GT1 car.
