Bernie is being a total ****wit over Kimis helmet. Really ridiculous. :(

As for Lewis's helmet well.. It makes me want to vomit :(

I hold my hands up and say I'm no Lewis fan but neither I am a Lewis hater, I love his driving and he's truly exciting to watch at times but seriously.. This helmet makes him look like a pimp. :(

I suppose with that particular camera angle the top of the helmet has such prime position on the screen that it became too valuable a piece of TV real estate to allow sponsors to potentially take over it.

Because helping sponsors would be bad?

Though the American racing system for this is a little more efficient. There's a limit on onboard cameras(at least as far as how many the network broadcast) so you lease it from them for the race weekend. You give them money, you get more exposure for your sponsors.

Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of films about racing drivers, but when I see Räikkönen with a helmet naming Hunt, all I think about is Räikkönen taking part in a snowmobile race under Hunt's name, Kimi Räikkönen wearing Hunt's helmet colours last year also in Monaco, Kimi Räikkönen telling the press once and again -for years- he would have liked to race during Hunt's times...
Frankly, last thing I think about seeing that helmet is a film that's not even been released yet :well:

Vergne's Cevert helmet shows how today's drivers would be better off with simple bold identifiable designs than the rubbish most of them have.

Most modern helmets look like something out of 'pimp my ride' rather than F1.

Red Bull also had to make changes to Vettel's helmet for the Austin GP last year because of the Red Bull logo on the top of it, worked into the design. I suspect what did for the Hunt design was the stuff OSX quoted Kimi saying a few posts earlier:

"I think it's great that Rush is coming out and that his family is launching products to represent one of my favourite eras in F1."

I think the decision is crazy harsh, but he did make an endorsement of sorts there and I wonder if that was enough to get it shot down. Shame. His admiration for James Hunt is longstanding and certainly very obviously predates the release of the film.

I hope if he wins the GP, he says in the podium interview first off that 'I want to dedicate this win to James Hunt and the Rush film as a celebration of the golden era of F1'. I hope he races with an X to cover the name in the hlment and then auction the helmet after peeling it off and revealing it in a premiering sort of way in a special event after the race!

The ruling on Kimi's helmet seems bizarre. F1 is head-to-toe in advertising. Complete hypocrisy.

What am I missing. What's the connection between his helmet and the movie? I don't see "Rush" anywhere on the helmet.

So? It's not for commercial purpose. You're missing the point.

Bernie is just angry that someone is making money with F1 and he isn't getting any of it. They switched the James Hunt helmet back though between FP3 and quali.

So possible sanctions coming? Kimi agreed to pay any fine just for the hell of it?

did you see that Vettel changed his helmet for quali, some kind of chrome design, without the pinup girl and the 60's cars on the top?
probably Hanna's influence.

I think he's always done that when conditions change, he has one helmet with the clear visor, and one with the standard visor. He's run that one before at Malaysia FP.

That was a surprising sight. Guess a thick brown envelope changed hands sometime between FP3 and qualifying.

If Kimis purpose was to advertise a movie he probably has nothing to do with. I heard about Rush only after Bernie got involved, before that I thought it was Kimi paying a tribute to his idol(?) like before.

I guess we can no longer publicly pay tribute to Lincoln or Washington or Jesus since it would be an advertisement for the movies made about them.

Maybe Bernie shouldn't allow Lauda into the paddock. I mean by this logic he is a human billboard.;)

Q:Why do you need your helmet”James Hunt” painting was covered with the morning, but in qualifying it was again visible?
Kimi:”I can not say anything about it.”

Reporter: “(to Bernie) Didn’t you ask Kimi to remove the James Hunt text?”
Bernie: “Yes.. but he didn’t listen, did he?”

Raikkonen Allowed to Race with Hunt Tribute
25 May 2013

Posted Image

Formula One title contender Kimi Raikkonen has been cleared to race with a tribute on his helmet to late champion James Hunt after the lettering was initially deemed to contravene television regulations. The regulations do not allow rear-facing messages and Lotus had said the 2007 world champion had been told to cover the words.

However, Formula One's commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, who had been unaware of the controversy when asked by a reporter, stepped in and resolved the situation.

Raikkonen qualified using the uncovered helmet design and told Reuters he did not know what all the fuss had been about.

"I don't know. You have to ask FOM (Formula One Management)or Bernie," he said. "I don't know the story and I have no interest in going to ask them."

A representative of FOM suggested the cover-up might have been requested by the company's ever-watchful lawyers.

Hunt's title win, in a battle with Austrian Niki Lauda, is the subject of a new biopic 'Rush' due out later this year and that may also have played a part in the decision if the tribute was to be construed as promotion for the movie.

What about the Pepe Jeans on webbers helmet? Don't see how else you're ever meant to see it other than from t cam. Same goes for the logos on the cockpit sides of a lot of cars.

This is vettel, but anyway, see what I mean?

It's not really a design, is it? It's "let's see how much shit we can throw on a small space".

I have always preferred classical paint schemes, the simple ones when you could look at it and immediately know who is the driver. These days there is too much random paint on there...

Lorenzo normally has a circle and an X on the top of his helmet, and his numbers on the side. That's the extent of his design. And it's based on the idea that he invented the concept of passing someone around the outside.

Apparently.

It's not an aesthetically superb design but I like it. To be fair, this isn't meant to be interesting to fans. I'm sure Milton Keynes team members wouldn't find it boring.

Okay, I like the colour arrangement. I like the contrast which emerges from the combination of a gold "grounding" and the black elements (e.g. those stripes on top of the helmet).
The colours of the German flag on top are fully integrated in the design, opposed to other helmets, where a flag is simply 'stuck on' without connection to the rest of the colour scheme. IMO it would be even better without the purple.
