Not bad, gonna make to make it easy to see which driver it is. Was always clear who Lewis was with his yellow lid.

Button's vents are on backwards. Perez's are not. Interesting.

Perez's helmet seems strangely design-less.

At first glance I thought it was Hamilton's. From the front they would look nearly indistinguishable. Have McLaren got a load of photos they need to get rid?

Took me some time before I spotted the nr. 7 in there :p

It'll be bigger on his helmet than on the car.

I thought I may as well post this here for your feedback!

Here's James Calado's helmets that I designed for him, which he's using for next year and hopefully for F1. Please don't be too harsh as it's the first helmet design I've done and I can't wait to see it in the flesh next year.

The different shades of yellow aren't even in the same ballpark? And the fluro green strip at the base of the halo too? I think, once in the car, it will be very different, had Lewis stuck with his original design he used for McLaren (in 06 during his testing) then yes it'd be similar. I like it, not too busy, kept his roots, still has the colour of Mexico present and its not a clustered ball of mess, and more importantly he got rid of that god awful oversized HP3, I hate Bell helmets.

Looks good. And Union Jack on the top is cool, it's a good place for a flag.

Is fluro yellow a favourite amongst us British at the moment? Turvey/Calado have lots of fluro on there, or is it just a sign of the times? Maybe I'm just a bit too old..I'll get my coat.

You'll have to forgive me though, I miss iconic helmets, Hakkinen, Hill, Patrese, Senna, Coulthard, Piquet.. simple but effective. Timo Glocks was one of the worst, and I can never stand Vettel's helmets they are horrible.

The only thing I can say about Vettel's helmets from memory is that they're usually blueish and have the Red Bull logo.

and yes, Timo Glock's is one of the worst. A complete mess.

When did this current trend of really complex shit start? I'm thinking 10 years ago. Can it be traced to any particular drivers or did it just come with the 21st century?

The complex helmet designs started to come on within the last 10 years. In the late 90s and early 00s, drivers liked the simple lines but things like grids and shadowing started to get popular.

The problem with just using simple lines and color fields is that a lot end up looking the same. So you have to add things to make them stand out. Now it's the opposite, but the same. Everyone's is so complex, they're blurs of fades and shadows on neon colors. Designing helmets is tough. Coming up with something iconic, yet original, yet fast looking isn't easy.

Here's a few I've designed/painted lately.

But enough about me.
I really like Checo's. The neon green/yellow fade will be a HUGE contrast inside the cockpit of the McLaren.
Button's lid has always been a really good one in my opinion. Not over-the-top with complexity and effects, but very iconic.
Kimi has created his own style and it looks fantastic as usual. Grojean's is a little more generic but it has good colors and good balance.

Uffe (who does Vettel's, Button's, Checo's, Kimi's and a handful of other F1 guys) does top-notch work.

Another quick test. Describe to me Ayrton Senna's helmet. Or James Hunt's. Or Carlos Reutemann's. Or Carlos Pace's. And tell me with whom they could be confused.

Now describe to me Paul di Resta's.

As for the ones you posted...I couldn't tell the difference between the designs, just the colours.

I think even in the mid 90s I could describe every driver's helmet. It was very much a symbol that was intrinsically linked with them. I'd struggle with 99% of the grid to be honest.

The problem with just using simple lines and color fields is that a lot end up looking the same.

I completely disagree. I never had a problem telling them apart. But the big advantage is that you can remember them. Whereas the really busy modern helmets barely register. There's just too much going on. They don't evoke any emotion.

*still horrific compared to most designs.

Maybe it has no yellow because Senna will be in other car wit his yellow helmet?

Yup, those all look different.

But the second one you posted is essentially Senna's design with different colors. And how many helmets are there out there like Scheckter's with one bar of color across the side?

I can obviously describe all those driver's helmets, as can anyone, because they're trademarks of the driver and they were from an era where ALL helmets were just simple lines. Those helmets are iconic in themselves because of what the driver did. But I could describe every helmet on the grid in this day and age too.

I'm all for iconic simple designs too. But I like the current style as well. No matter what the helmet looks like, it should be personal to the driver. Just as with any form of design, it has evolved with time. There are trends.

Thanks for your critique.

And thank you Zava. Lots of hard work went into it.

No matter what the helmet looks like, it should be personal to the driver.

The problem with that is that they aren't. Not these days. They are too beholden to sponsors. Imagine Senna driving for Red Bull. Would they make him have a blue and silver thing? The ironic thing is Red Bull go on about individuality yet make their drivers have helmets-by-numbers.

The designs above were those I could find on a quick search. There were other distinctive designs. Graham Hill, Peter Revson (copied by Teo Fabi), Derek Warwick, Mauro Baldi, Rupert Keegan, Helmuth Koinigg, Eddie Cheever, Beppe Gabbiani and many others had bold, simple, easy designs that you could tell from a mile away. Doesn't happen nowadays...

Paul's helmets are always so hideous. He really needs a less busy design. Trulli was another who should have kept his original design, once he started swapping in 2003 to that god awful chrome it just went down hill fast and every year nearly was a different helmet design, his final design, the bright red/orange was disgusting

Great job, it looks fantastic!

I'm surprised the RSF logo is so small, the last couple of years its been very prominent.
