Here you go !

Checo's 2013 helmet

Looks like it´s sprayed with flo-wis. Tacky altogether, don´t like at all.

Hamilton's 2013 helmet has no style. It's grotesque in the way only Mercedes can design things.

Checo's lid is slick and actually looks like thought has gone into how it would look together with the car.

Lewis' just looks gypsy.

For some reason I really like Hamilton's helmet in combination with the yellow Pirelli's and the greenish parts of the Mercedes livery. It's a very pleasant mix to look at. It's a nicer yellow tint than that of Rosberg anyway. I also like how Mercedes have kept adding more green to their livery, although it was always my favorite looking car over the past 2 years anyway. But with Hamilton in it it looks finished, if I were a fan of his I'd be happy with that. To be fair the Mercedes nose isn't in the above pictures though...

Agreed, the matching yellow of the pirellis and Lewis' helmet gives a great effect

America is pretty awesome. Its a heck of a lot less cluttered than some of the other designs on the grid.

People get pretty excited about seeing their driver with a new helmet.

I agree with you in that it's not too difficult to distinguish who's who in the stills above, but during a race I'd prefer it to be a bit more obvious so that I don't have to consciously think about it.

How can anyone not see the difference? Clearly Hamiltons helmet is much darker yellow than Nico's. Easy to tell the difference.

Rosberg's photo is taken with heaps more light on it - and there's many casual viewers as well. Or think about the people next to the track. They'll have a really hard time as well.

The T-cam is no more difficult to see and is designed to differentiate teammates.

Actually looking at those images it might be not hard at all to distinguish the helmets under sunlight just by color.

I dunno. Announcers have trouble with much less similar helmets. It's not the worst thing ever, it will just make it more a pain in the rear to figure out who it is at first glance. I would like if it they would just change the ring around their helmets.

When shrunken on a television screen and moving around at a hundred mph it might be trickier...

Thing is there are acres of blank silver flesh on those cars. The perfect thing to put a giant number on them, as in the past. Although that's perhaps too obvious, much better to distinguish the cars by saying the lead driver gets to use light red brake discs whereas the number two, who was the number one last year, uses dark orange instead.

I have to say it; I have never seen an uglier car and helmet combination as Lewis in the 2013 merc.

It's worse than playmobil it like a kid's Lego piece where the parts are all different random colors. It's gypsy beyond words.

I would prefer this, both Mercedes and RedBull have the numbers on the bulkhead.

The T-cam is much easier to see than numbers, even with giant ones.

But then you have to know who the number one driver is - which is not always obvious - and which colour marks the number one. They're not as instinctive as numbers. Especially when things like lap charts and scoreboards refer to numbers rather than t-cam colours. And numbers don't bugger up the colourblind.

Red is usually the team no1, it's always the lower number of the two. And numbers change most years so having a sticker on the nose blocked by the car ahead gets us back to where we started. T-cams are painted for a reason. I used to run the F1 gallery 100% from them if I couldn't see the car clearly.

Swarovski crystals are the top-of-the-line newest thing in helmet design actually. Lots of guys are doing them for special helmets like Lammers' Las Vegas helmet shown here. One of my kart buddies has some on his latest helmet.

I think the opposite: there should be a contrast between the helmet and the car, each one represents a different thing.

Lewis makes a small modification to his design and goes from one silver car to another and it's like the entire world of design has simply ceased to be.

Lewis' helmet has always been yellow, blue, green, and red. It's the exact same colors.

The helmet belongs to the driver. He can design it anyway he wants. It's his business card.

The complex helmet designs started to come on within the last 10 years. In the late 90s and early 00s, drivers liked the simple lines but things like grids and shadowing started to get popular.

The problem with just using simple lines and color fields is that a lot end up looking the same. So you have to add things to make them stand out. Now it's the opposite, but the same. Everyone's is so complex, they're blurs of fades and shadows on neon colors. Designing helmets is tough. Coming up with something iconic, yet original, yet fast looking isn't easy.

Here's a few I've designed/painted lately.

I never said they had to be the same color. Good design is not random it has some rules. McLaren spend time to match colors of the helmet to the cars. Thats why Lewis' helmet used to be a pastel yellow, yellow mixed in with white to complement the chrome of the Mclaren (and not just sunburst yellow like Senna's lid he used to have).

In this merc lid there's no design, the graphics are obnoxious and crude (like the design of a merc I suppose) and the black monster logo is simply a stain, like a big piece of dirt.

My opinion, but then again I work in the visual arts so I nitpick at these things.

Edit: Then again the design of the entire Merc F1 car is ugly, silver and green? I'd have done a Lotus and made all logos on it one color.

Love Sebastian's new helmet (when is it not new, really?), love the idea of Swarovski crystal helmets (definitely for Monaco or Singapore), hate the idea of team mates having similar helmets. Considering he is walking into Nico's team, I would say Hamilton ought to change his colour at least partially to make it more distinctive. As for the Toro Rosso drivers, can't they just borrow one of Sebastian's old helmets? One can take a blue one and the other red (both Red Bull colours) then we can always tell them apart.

Mercedes didn't design his helmet though! I guess the Monster Energy part is their fault but that could have been integrated differently by the designer.
