Pedro is a known quantity and McLaren have let him go before. I'm not saying that means nobody should hire him, only that it's quite reasonable for McLaren to have passed on the offer.

Oh, I understand your argument now, makes sense.

I suppose we should overlook the fact that he stayed with McLaren till Sauber offered him to drive a car? Or that other people equally involved in the 2007 affair are still working at McLaren? Not to mention that nobody has said that McLaren did not want him.

De la Rosa is very much liked in the paddock, both personally and professionally. Everybody, starting with the top McLaren guys, understood his desire to be a full time driver and not a test one. He has always been loyal to his teams, and his experience is very much valued. I am sure that Whitmarsh would have been very happy to have him back, but that in any case he wishes him well in whichever role he takes.

Yes, Ferrari's interest reflects well on Pedro. The fact that McLaren did not pick him up this time doesn't mean anything at all - they have other guys for those roles now and those positions are never anybody's by right.

One point and one question:

The point is that this makes it very clear, if it wasn't already, that spygate was a storm in a teacup and everyone is long over it. Even Mike Coughlan has been rehabilitated into an arguably better role than he had at that time.

The question is:

Will Pedro be the reserve driver at Ferrari. Does he stand in if one of the drivers has to miss a GP?

When you say they let him go, did he not leave of his own accord on both previous occasions to go to a race drive? I always thought that was what happened, but I would be happy to be corrected if not. I can see how a race drive would trump any test driver role these days.

I think when he left Mac he was still under contract and they released him to go racing.

Ah, so they let him go because he wanted to go. I took it the other way.

No. They still have Fisi lurking in the background for that. :rotfl:

Pedro's purely for his play station skills.

They have not said who the official reserve is, but it would more than likely be de la Rosa, given that he has the most recent racing experience.

So, who is the one going to the GPs? Martínez de la Rosa or Gené?

In other words (my fellow Spaniards will know what I mean), who's going to try to put a bit of sense in the TV commentary? Pedro or Marc?
Please, please, let it be Pedro...

Hopefully PDLR. Gené started very good but now it's not as good.

With Fisi and Gene already onboard, does this mean Ferrari now have three test drivers? Why do they need so many?

You are forgetting Davide Riggon, who is their official 3rd driver. And they also still have Jules Bianchi!

It is possible we will never know unless the need arises. It may even depend on whether there is breathing space in the championships, meaning they could evaluate a young driver, or if not, they might go for experience.
