Unbelievably, Matt Neal has injured his right hand at a crucial point in the season for the third year in succession! It remains to be seen if he will be at full fitness for Silverstone.

A pattern is emerging. Presumably 2014 will be the turn of the motorcycle crash.

Neal has been passed fit to compete in this weekend's event. In other news, James Kaye will not be appearing again this season, but AmD Milltek team boss Shaun Hollamby will wheel out the VW Golf for one last time at Brands Hatch.

So Jason Plato leads an MG front row after Silverstone qualifying.  Turkington is well-placed in fourth; Neal, Jordan and Shedden are ninth, tenth and fifteenth respectively.

Not very many MG front row lockouts have led to great weekends...

Only things I've managed to learn from today at the circuit iare:

that the weather forecast was a bit inaccurate - there is no way that was 19C out there!

Also a temporary tyre barrier has been erected at Copse (inside) to stop the drivers taking a short cut.  I've spoken to the Ginetta lot who say it's actually unsighted when they come down the straight - they suddenly spot it just before Copse.

Tom Ingram is the 2013 Ginetta Champion and very pleased about it.

And do watch out for this Howard Fuller chappie in the BTCC as he's been extremely entertaining today when it comes to keeping his car pointing in the same direction as the track.

I'm photo tabbard 188 so do wave if you spot me tomorrow.

Can't help but notice that Rob Austin is back down in his usual position after Rockingham. Alan Gow's changing boost levels strikes again!

Comical. Sorry, but it isn't proper motor racing any more.

I should have added that there's been a lot of clamping down today on driving standards across the whole TOCA package with lots of warnings being issued.

Easy win for the MG's but a lot going on behind. Hondas seem quite capable of making up for the lack of boost. Shedden curiously off form. Jordan rather pacing himself.

Tordoff said it was legal because he was ahead by the first yellow flag.

Thought I'd end up missing the races today (again!), but to my surprise we ended up having lunch at a pub that was showing BTCC. Fairly easy win for Plato, and a nice drive by Neal keeping third by a hair's breadth.

Interesting to see Fittipaldi's grandson racing today, I didn't know he was racing in the junior formula.

Fantastic battle in that race. Passing, re-passing and using every inch of the road and more without using the old "shove your nose in the gap and spin your opponent" technique.

Plato v Jordan woo-hoo! That was fun. Don't think JP is a big fan of Jonathan Palmer's new direction on track limits though, considering the amount of dust he was kicking up in the last few laps there.

Yea, neck and neck battle between those two, great to see. They didn't show Aron Smith's girlfriend though. He's on the podium, he did well so give her some air time!

Top six are reversed; Neal and Turkington on the front row!

Edit: just realised that Neil Cunningham was the guest of honour! One of my earliest motorsport memories is watching him win the 1996 Eurocar V6 Championship on Top Gear Motorsport.

Sad to hear of his condition.

Shedden has won race three, while Turkington had a disastrous retirement which means that he is effectively out of championship contention. Jordan is now within touching distance of the title, with a 38/39 point advantage over the works Honda drivers.

Race 3 was pretty good. Well done on Aaron Smith of course. Where's that gf of his?  :p

It'll be nice to see another new, young champion. If Jordan can do it that would be great.

C'mon now, man, you're a racing fan. You're supposed to despise those "Wife/Girlfriend looking a bit worried in the garage" shots that directors so love. Didn't you get the memo? ;)

Yea dude, I know the memo but I am sadly yet awesomely biased towards Smith's girlfriend, Marco Melandri's girlfriend and Scott Dixon's wife. Cheesy and cringe-worthy are the least offensive words I can come up with when the racing director zooms in on the ladies and the commentators say some creepy old man bile and laugh at their own inept knee-jerk jokes regarding the fairer sex. I would be the Tony Stewart of the paddocks and just poke random hot asses all over the world.

Punishment report: Matt Neal received an official reprimand and two penalty points on his race licence for his collision with Tordoff (Triple Eight has protested this penalty in the belief that it is too lenient); Mat Jackson has received a £500 fine and three points for his collision with Turkington; and Adam Morgan was reprimanded for his driving standards.

Interesting reading.  And it bears out my belief that St Jason of Plato is exempted from any penalties, irrespective of what he does.  In race 3, he repeatedly ran wide deliberately at Copse, yet never received a track limits warning, unlike many others.  And his 'push to pass' tactics at Luffield were ignored as well.  BTCC driving standards will never be improved if the best known driver is allowed to flout them at will.

That's our Matt! Broken finger and he can still pick up points on his license. Nothing can keep the man down ;)

He didn't do it more than anyone else. At Brands earlier this season Jordan took JP off going for an overtake. No penalty. When JP overtook Jordan, nobody got taken off.

Matt Neal should have been penalised for pushing Tod off.

The stewards favour JP? Gimme a break. He's hard but fair.

Yes, but the others got the warning flag.  Plato didn't.  Why not?

He is the epicentre of poor driving standards in BTCC.  BEcause he does it, all the others think they have to do it too.

I'm sure I remember the commentators mentioned him getting warned at some point, possibly not race three though.  The graphic that shows when drivers are receiving a warning seems to have disappeared from the TV coverage this year as well, which doesn't help matters.

And from the support package, great to see that name back on an open-wheeler:

VW Cup racer and HARD scholar Tom Barley is the latest driver who will appear in the BTCC team's Insignias.  Matt Neal's participation at Brands Hatch is yet to be confirmed after the operation to repair his broken finger.

An eventful day of practice and qualifying has resulted in an MG front row, with Jordan third, Shedden fourth and Turkington sixth.  Neal crashed heavily exiting Paddock, jarred his injured hand and thus limited himself to 16th, but will probably take the start.  Árón Smith missed qualifying after also crashing heavily at the same place during practice, rolling his car.

A bizarre situation has arisen in the Clio Cup: championship challenger Paul Rivett has had to withdraw from the event due to an Achilles injury, but almost-champion Josh Files's car has been all-but-written-off after he went into the gravel trap at Druids and was collected heavily by his team-mate, who went off in the same place moments later.  It remains to be seen if Files can take part in the races.

Jake Hill putting the second Audi in 10th looks impressive. Will Bratt never seemed to get even close Rob, and Jake has gone four places ahead at his first attempt.

Forecast for rain - could get very messy tomorrow. With Neal re-injured and back in 16th in the first race, he is probably going to be out of contention for scoring big points in the first two races, so it is down to Gordon and Andy really.

I would probably call Plato for race 1 victory from pole and in in the Honda duel it really comes down to survival in that hectic pack more than anything else.

If anyone is not watching this, why? Dramatically wet conditions, title going down to the wire. Edge of seat stuff.

Well now this IS getting tense..... Could all come down to the reverse grid draw. Wonder who they have to do that today? Shedden for pole anyone?
