According to the article he was recruited by Wolff to work at Williams but will now move with Wolff to Mercedes (?). Make of it what you want.Do you think he would leave McLaren for a new challenge?
Sport Bild were the first to break the Wolff story so they have some credibility, although they may be overstretching themselves with this one...

Bild broke Wolff and Glock stories - both turned out to be true. Extremely good short term track record, announcement in the morning?
Bild broke the Glock story and the Wolff story too. Jon Noble seemed to think they already had today's pressers on their desks as of yesterday.
Three for three?
What color am I thinking of? Quick!

If this is still scheduled than there's no truth to the story.McLaren @TheFifthDriver
Next week Technical Director Paddy Lowe will answer questions ahead of the car reveal and the 2013 season. What would you ask? #AskPaddy

I don't think so, if Paddy was about to leave, I'd expect McLaren to milk him as much as they could before he officially left.

I like the speculation that part of the move is about Brawn and Fry moving on.
That would make some sense. Didn't they both do well out of the sale of Brawn GP to Mercedes? I'd imagine that Ross, at least, staying on for a period would have been part of the deal but there is no reason why he would stay there forever. He doesn't own it anymore. Also, by now it is clear that Ross is not a magic bullet bringing success wherever he goes.
A lot is changing at Mercedes GP.

To talk about the MP4-28? No way. If true he's already on gardening leave with no access to McLaren premises. For sure. A Q&A with fans is trivial stuff.I don't think so, if Paddy was about to leave, I'd expect McLaren to milk him as much as they could before he officially left.

I'm thinking it's more at the expense of Bob Bell who now has a similar role to Paddy Lowe's at McLaren.I like the speculation that part of the move is about Brawn and Fry moving on.
However I do believe Ross will be leaving quite soon.

Nope. Same as Bob Bell.Paddy is technical director, same as Ross Brawn or Adrian Newey. I don't think he will get any lesser role than TD.
Brawn is Team Prinicipal.

Wow! Martin Whitmarsh (as a team principal of McLaren) managed to lose 4 key people! Dave Ryan, Pat Fry, Lewis Hamilton and now Paddy Lowe! Managed to sign Jenson Button, Sam Michael and Sergio Perez.
MY AWARD FOR YOU: BEST POST EVER!!!!!

http://www.motorspor...s_13012111.html"This is the first time I've heard of it. I'm not aware of anyone from McLaren joining Mercedes," Hamilton said this afternoon in Stuttgart. For him, the signing of Lowe would not really be necessary. "I have the feeling now they have a great team and I'm not sure if they still need a lot more people to develop the car in the right direction. There are a lot of smart people, "said Hamilton.

Wow! I did not expect anything like this...very interesting if it is true.
It is indeed such an exciting time to be a Hamilton/Rosberg fan. I like both drivers, so I don't have any problem with their being team-mates. Paddy Lowe at Mercedes? Hmmm...have Mercedes become the new McLaren?!

I'd like to see an org chart. Lol.
You'd need an ultra widescreen monitor - Mercedes seem to be gunning for strength in breadth rather than depth. Question is will all the captains be steering in the same direction.

The relevant bit.
How SPORT BILD learned of the new Mercedes-CEO Toto Wolff has recruited the British Lowe actually for his former Williams team. He was also Managing Director today. Prepared: Now he takes the British mastermind simply to Mercedes.

Earlier in the talk he'd spoken of how the 2014 rules will shake up car design, shifting the emphasis away from aerodynamics.
None of this is news to us of course, but maybe the tech guys want to be in the right place at the beginning of this big shake up, in order to be more marketable later on. Ditto the smart drivers.
eta: of course, that doesn't fit in with him having been lured to Williams first. Oh well....

Just translated the original article and it sounds like Paddy was originally persuaded by Toto to join Williams but then Toto got the chance at Mercedes and has brought Paddy with him. Not sure how all this works regarding contracts, leave & any potential financial reparations coming Mclaren's (And maybe William's) way.
The relevant bit.
To me that makes this rumor less likely. Recruiting Paddy to Williams would require them to come up with some big $$, which doesn't seem to be an option for them especially considering the took on Bottas instead of a money driver.
Also, the conflict of interest involved here would be substantial. Negotiating with Lowe as a representative of Williams and then luring him over to Mercedes after a deal had been agreed to would be a pretty big ethical issue and Frank would be able to sue for sure.
Lastly, as I'm rooting for McLaren this year I hope this isn't true.

in any case, the moves and whispers so far suggest Merc is taking their F1 foray seriously... at the end of the day though, they need to have the car and in season development to show for it. They've already secured some good performance by having arguably the strongest driver pairing on the grid, now they gotta build on that by giving em the machinery.

Posted 21 January 2013 - 21:01
It seems a stretch for me to believe this. If it's true then I think we can clearly see what Merc's strategy is, hire every one in the paddock so there's no one left at the other teams.
No thats Ferrari's strategy. Mercedes have a long way to catch up.

If this is true, who will take Lowe's role in Mclaren?
Sam Michael would probably cover during any gardening leave period -
I don't think any of us are qualified to suggest who could perform well in the role and would be a fit at McLaren - the best person may already be at McLaren in a more junior role, or could be at another team in a junior role.
