I hope not, that would be a pretty awful way to start the season.

No man is bigger than the team. Lotus have a pretty formidable technical department (both in terms of brain power and technology) and all they need to start knocking on championship's door is a bit more $.

But Allison is brilliant guy. He is still young and he already made with limited resources good car.

It's been a while since McLaren lured some top engineer but let's wait and see. Paddy was supposed to leave and it appears he's not.

If Paddy was intending to leave for Mercedes, but the move is being blocked (for now) by Brawn, then McLaren would need to put people in place to replace Lowe anyway - bringing Allison in for Pat Frys old role with Lowe for now, there to replace him if need be, would be ideal.

With Fry having advised Ferrari on the McLaren staff to try and recruit, and Lowe possibly doing the same should he move on - it would be nice to see McLaren start poaching again.

At the rate Merc is recruiting, I won't be surprised if they one day commit the ultimate faux pas and try to poach an engineer who already works with them (Brawn, Bob Bell) cos they seem hell bent on getting everyone.

kinda of like the Man City FC owners bidding for Tevez in their blind quest to get everyone (forgetting he already plays for them) :drunk:

If that's true then Merc's chances of doing so have jumped through the roof with Allison joining McLaren

This is getting ridiculous, far too many moves (rumoured and confirmed) within one week. What the hell is up with this timing? I know the '14 regs are coming up, but by this time they're starting to work on the cars, and with gardening leaves, all these new engineers coming and going will only work from July onwards on the new car.

It'd have made more sense to have this rush of transfers 6 months ago. As it is we're having a market of engineers as energetic as football's January transfer window. And usually we get this sort of thing about drivers not staff. Bizarre.

Lotus lost Elliot to Merc and now Allison to McLaren. Not good, not good at all for them. Add to that the change in regs and engines and 2014 isn't looking a happy year for Enstone.

Silly season is silly. Lewis move to Mercedes really set things off. This is bad news for Lotus though because I doubt they will be able to lure a replacement from a competing team to fill the role.

He is really good designer. E20 and R30 were good cars, he will be hard to replace for Lotus. Sad if true.

The car is designed and built by hundreds of engineers over a period of several months. No single man can make much of a difference these days (unless your name is Adrian Newey, but even his contribution is sometimes being overestimated). Of course, Allison's departure would leave a hole in Lotus's tech department, but it wouldn't be nearly as big as some of the posts in this thread seem to suggest.

Depends on whether they have someone internally to smoothly takeover his job. Losing Eliot to Merc wouldn't have helped much either. If they have to go poach a TD from another team, then it's really bad.

I think Lotus will sink without Allison, if they don't sink anyway. But could they theoretically at least get Pat Symonds back?

At the current rate at which Mercedes is absorbing all the top talent they can get, ex-con Pat Symonds will increasingly look like tasty meat.

So this must point that Lowe is leaving?

Or do McLaren and Mercedes just plan on buying everyones TDs?

If Lowe is leaving, it would be a good replacement. Even without him leaving this would be good for McLaren.

Hope it doesn't happen though. I want to see a lotus as strong as it can be, and Kimi being in the thick of it.

Maybe McLaren had been looking for a new TD? Look how they played ignorant about not having a Lewis replacement 2 weels before they announced Perez while negotiating with Perez and DiResta. I think Lowe wanted to leave McLaren for new pastures and Williams was his choice.

Nice thread to see a new addition to McLaren. :)

Compared to rumours of Lowe leaving McLaren it is positive to see.

I read on twitter that McLaren could be forced to reduce spending in F1 in order to devote resources to other areas of the organization.

Actually July is usually the time when resources start getting transferred to the new cars so that makes a lot of sense.

Think it was James Allen who said there is a real lack of senior level guys with this kind of experience.
