American Gregg Young began to drive sports cars, first at the 1970 24-hours of Daytona in a 250LM with Luigi Chinetti Jr. (7th). Late in '71, he won non-championship events with a Ferrari 512 M in Japan and, with Tony Adamowicz, in Ecuador. In '72, he campaigned his own team, Young American Racing and ran a McLaren M8F with some success in Can-Am. He also survived spectacular crashes at Sebring ('71) and Edmonton ('72) unscathed. Anyone know about Young, if he's still around, where he is or was from, his age, etc? Thanks, TC

His mother was Irene W. Young of Wilton, Conn and that's where the money came from.

He ran F5000 in 1970 and 1971 and the last I have on him was a season of Formula Atlantic in 1977.

Edit: Here are the results the Racing Sports Cars site has for him:

Ah yes, I knew that.

He and mother listed as living in Marina Point Drive, Daytona Beach, FL as well, presumably their winter retreat, but whatever Richard says must be right.

Thanks very much. So, if I understand, he or they, live or lived in Wilton, CT, with another residence in Daytona Beach? I wonder if he's still around and how or where to contact him?

What is the citation for his birth date?

Young's last race was at Le Mans in '78 - the reason for my interest, as I'm writing a massive, two-volume work about Americans at Le Mans. If he's not on the rights side of the grass, I wonder when and where he passed?

Again, thanks, TC

He is. The Marina Point Drive, Daytona Beach, FL address and phone number is in the phone book.

Gerg Young and his mother Irene were very nice. On his CanAm Team he had Cevert as a driver and himself. Lew Spencer was the team manager and Skinner and Jobe were the crew.

I was always intrigued by Gregg as a kid, if only for him bringing Francois to the States and running the ex-factory M8Fs in '72.

I wasn't ever able to find out much about him then, but would have never guessed he was only 23 at the time. Wow.

Thanks. :)

Does anyone know the name of YART's chief mechanic in the days that they ran Cordts / Cannon / Hobbs in the svelte yellow MAC's McLaren M6B's? It was Jack - something?

Young drove in F-5000 in 1971, but in a Surtees TS-7 F-1 car, which was eligible.
