On a less important note. I think the car with the changes has matured into a very handsome machine.

I was just going to say this. Looks very good now. Performance this weekend hasnt yet been what i expected.

GvdG was quicker without the new front wing during qualifying.

I predict he will fall back tomorrow, just because he isn't good at preserving the tires. Pic will overtake him, and it will be between Pic and Marussia from then on.

There hasn't been any real change in relative speed between the Marussia and Caterham. Their delta is about the same as it was in the final preseason test in Barcelona. What's more interesting is the S3 times as it gives an idea as to who'll be quick in Monte Carlo.

Good job from GvdG, outqualified Bianchi as well. Allthough I still do not know if Bianchi is looking good because he is or because Chilton is his teammate

Spanish GP.

Good strategy to counter Bianchi on lap 8, with an early pitstop.

Really good intelligent race from Pic, strong towards the end. Already able to race with the lower mid teams. And Caterhams are only going to get quicker from this point on.

New car able to manage tires a lot better too.

Too bad for that late blue flag, Pic was upsetting Botas.

True, as Pic mentioned it in his post race review.

Quote from Pic,
http://hosted-p0.vre...3e3c479/ARCHIVE

"There’s still more to come from the parts we brought here, quite a bit more in fact, so we’ll work on that back at the factory and see how much more we can extract for the next race in Monaco."

From GvdG,

"The car felt great, really good and I was definitely having the best of the season so far."

These are the things that fans are happy to hear. :)

good qualifying session for caterham in Monaco today. Hope geido can avoid any incident at that 1st corner tomorrow and Pic can do something from way back of the grid

So Giedo will be starting next to Maldonado tomorrow. I expect first corner flags between these two.

Even the Dutch F1 fans were slagging him off at the start of the season, but I've been really impressed with him so far - when he has had a chance he has taken it!

Sticking him in the car this "hybrid" year, and trousering the cash is looking like a smart move:)

Really bad luck in this race, blown engine for Pic and GvD really having to go into a risky strategy, I suspect he had no tyres at the end.

What do you think of GvdG ?

After the Canadian GP, Cyril Abiteboul evaluated Van der Garde's rookie season so far.

For Giedo it’s been the tough start to the season he expected, but he too is showing real signs of development, despite having a disappointing last race in Montreal. This is his first full season in F1 and he was very honest when he talked about his early season goals. The first few races were all about learning, taking in everything that a driver has to deal with, not just over a race weekend but throughout a whole season, and then starting to have the confidence to show what he can do once he’d had a few races to develop. In Bahrain he was back on a track he knew and he went well there, then even better in Spain and better still in Monaco. He was one of the stars of qualifying in Monaco and you have to have real confidence and outright speed to be quick there, so hearing him make the call to switch to slicks on a still damp Monaco track was good. It showed he’s finding his place in F1 and while he and the whole team have a long way to go, he’s getting there. But as Montreal showed, there is absolutely no room for loss of focus in F1 and we need to continue working with him on a few areas; blue flag management and tyre management being the key ones right now.

The two GP weekends after the interview (Britain and Germany) haven't changed anything in the picture that Abiteboul paints.

Pros:
+ brings sponsors to his financially struggling team
+ showed good quali pace in Monaco

Cons:
- lacks experience/skills in blue flag management
- lacks experience/skills in tyre management

Glad to see GvdG having a good race in Hungarian GP. Tires work a lot better for him, perhaps coming to grips on how to preserve the tires better.
Need to see more of that to judge his progress.

Pic needs to improve starts.

Good effort from VDG to beat Pic (who smashed Glock here last year and drove a blinder) even though it screwed up my teammate wars accumulator!

A lot of positives to take from the race - despite VDG's short stint on the softs, they seem to have got the tyres working for them. Hopefully going into the break they are happy with how they have pulled away from Marussia and can go back to plan A, putting most of their resources into the 2014 car...

They were still a minute or more off the next car but they did put 30 seconds on the Marussia's this race. I was a bit surprised at that

Marussia were nowhere. Their car was just plain awful around Hungaroring. I suspect it was just a one-off.

Actually, Pic had 63 seconds on bianchi and 106 seconds on Chilton

VDG finished around 10 seconds ahead of pic. Anyway Chilton was lapped and Bianchi was almost lapped by both caterhams!

They're still in no man's land and this won't change anytime soon. Maybe 2014, but for now they can just wait for another freak result to get 10th back from Marussia who seem to have finally fallen behind again.

Yup. But even then, I believe Marussia had an off day.

Pace wise, need freak race to get 10th back, and yes, Marussia had fallen behind the Caterhams again.

Progress towards mid teams ? None at all, in fact, this race showed they were even further back.

Given up 2013. Towards 2014, and hopefully beyond. :)

Kovalainen being draft again to drive the car in FP1 in Spa and Monza.

I hope he gonna be drafted in to drive one of their cars in the race - before season end.

He may be better than the current drivers but he had his big chance at McLaren but sadly never got comfortable.

Caterham told there were no more updates for the remainder of the season. So testing sounds weird.

Looks to me it is some sort of evaluation of Kovalainen for a possible 2014 drive?

Experience is valuable with new regulations comming up but he has been out of the running for a while. Pic and van der Garde got more and more (recent) experience and budget.

Didn't Caterham promised to make an early call over its 2014 driver lineup a few days ago? Interesting stuff

Of these Kova is the best driver, no doubt.  Don't think Caterham have any better options

GvdG is on fire. Great job. Team showed progress. Marrusia confirm crap.

Shame about Pic though, he was even quicker before his retirement. Would have finished ahead of Giedo.

Giedo really impressed the last couple of races. Matching if not beating Pic.The Marussia boys are unfortunately nowhere..

Also surprised by VDG. He keeps improving as the season progresses. Everyone wrote him off at the start, but he's been doing pretty well for his first season.

If he can keep this up, I hope he will have a seat for next year. Probably not in a midfield team, but another year in Caterham or Marussia seems plausible.

Caterham restructures Technical Department

http://www.gpupdate....cal-department/

The principal changes involve current Operations Director Jody Egginton being immediately promoted to Deputy Technical Director, with Performance Director John Iley also due to broaden his role to include the management of an Advanced Projects Group. The newly formed body will exclusively deal with future technical innovations, with the view of applying them to the Formula 1 team.

VDG has been significantly quicker than Pic in Qualy recently. Impressed by his change of speed since the break.

Kind of exposed Pic IMO

I have been quietly impressed with Giedo this season, I think you can visually see a driver improving with every race he does.

Me too, seems like he's got to F1 at a good time, as he's reached a more mature stage of his career.
