Pic's time of 1.24.8 on medium tyres in the morning when the track is still green, is a little surprising.
And only 0.6s off GvDG's time yesterday.

Maybe Caterham is not as bad as it seems ?

1.23,1 by Pic. Very good, although we did see fast times from Caterham during last year's tests aswell.

Marussia 0.05 off Caterham's sandbagging, I guess both have a bit of cement they've just chipped away.

That said, I guess we'll have to wait for 1st race to see who's running out of spec'd car for test.

Caterham will run out of room earlier.
The car is so basic and the public statements so low key that it's a bit obvious this is a B spec from last year.
I will be worried if the update slated for Europe doesn't work. I would rather have a Caterham starting bad and ending well than last year's Catarham that started with promisse and only reverted their bad form on the last race.

Based on Riad's tweet, I think Caterham has no intention of showing their true form at testing.

Also if you read from their testing summaries, they didn't mention anything about qualifying set up or such, although
I'm sure they did some low fuel runs, but not qualifying runs.

The team have regrouped around two new drivers, Frenchman Charles Pic and Dutchman Giedo van der Garde, who both found their new car difficult until an aero update arrived late in the final test.

HI all

An aero update from Caterham that actually seems to increase pace and drivability? Have they finally found something significantly aero wise? Team and supporters has been through some tough and disappointing moments when expectations and hot air has turned into failed updates on the CT01. I hardly dare to believe it, but if it’s true then nothing would make me happier now just before the season starts. :)

I think Caterham's management had written off this season long before it had started. It's a risky move since there's not a lot of value in a team that's outside the top 10. More worrying though is the possibility of the present design team producing another lemon. As the saying goes; ' if they can do it once, they can certainly do it again'.

Caterham seem to be running last years car, with no updates since the first pre-season test.

Their concept of not bringing performance to the car until Barcelona is rather odd considering the early part of the season is more likely to be the point they may grab a higher placed finish if there is unreliability from faster team and possibly strategy errors with tyre uncertainty.

Caterham is set to announce a new Chinese sponsor in the China GP. ma will drive in free practice. Hopefully he's better than Fairuz Fauzy.

Not sure about that - with the engine freeze and all cars being an evolution of the 2012 cars it's pretty unlikely that half the field will go out due to mechanical issues - and that's what it would take to gets points. Later in the year visiting counties close to their typhoon seasons is when there is more chance of a freak result:)

Ma is a lot worse as Fauzy imho. Canamasas was anounced as development driver for the Caterham F1 team too, he might do a Friday practice session as well.

At least Fairuz Fauzy finish second in WSbR 2009 driver standing. Ma is a LOT worse that Fauzy!

Not even enough for Chris Samba's 1 week wage. So I don't think its a big sum.

I think his father-in-law will ensure he lasts, if they are looking at his money. Its when Caterham decides to up the ante for a better driver that
he will be leaving the team.

Who knows, maybe he can be developed into a decent driver. :)

Well it's last year's car driven by two slower drivers. If Bianchi keeps it on the road each weekend, a wooden spoon looks inevitable.

Good driver choice by Marussia indeed, in the last moment. Bianchi didn't have a lot of running but is doing well.

According to Pic, they had KERS failure in the last stint, so he couldn't push. The supersofts wears off quickly. But with the mediums, they did
pretty well. Giedo had a slow puncture with the mediums that meant a changed strategy.

Still not convinced Marussia is quicker, but they have the good of Bianchi today.

In Malaysia, we'll have a clearer picture. but Pic says, whats coming for Spain is going to be interesting.

So I'm hoping the upgrades work.

What seems to have gone unnoticed here is that Bianchi's race pace was almost on the back of the mid field. Hoping that the Barcelona upgrade will cure what is a poor car is a pipe dream, it won't happen. Best to look towards 2014 and hope Smith et al can get their sh1t together.

Caterham pays for their gamble and will probably do so all year. I think they have underestimated Marussia and their plan to get 10th by fielding virtually the same car as last year looks shaky. 10th will probably be decided by some freak result, so no matter who is faster of Marrussia or Caterham - noone can feel safe until the last race is over.

Is it too early to think that Rossi or Ma will be a race driver before the summer break?

Bianchi's pace to Caterham's was alarming.

There is nothing you can do as the season started. Heikki should have been in the car no matter what I do not know, but he is the one who pulled the team.
Sad to see the premise falling apart. Ma nor Rossi will exceed the knowledge that Heikki has. Srreangely the driver line up was very strong the last year. Very strong.

End
