Mk 5 Bolwell, with Ford Twin Cam power

Mk 7 Bolwell, presumably with Holden grunt

and finally, the Mystery Car aka 'Nothing Special'

I don't know how he could get dressed in leather jacket, leather helmet, scarf wrapped around his face, in the temperatures experienced over the weekend

With Phillip Island Classic on this weekend maybe it is time to revive this great part of the forum.

Natsoft has all the times.  Some of the fastest outright,, Tom Tweedie 5000 1 28.39. Richard Davidson a couple of sec slower. Lucio Cesario RT21 1.34.3 and Gp Q John Bowe  1 29.35. And what the hell is a -423255 that he is driving?

It would appear that Andy Newall with his GT40 and Palliser, Hugh Colman with his Chevron B8, Greg Thornton with his March 75A and my friend Roz Shaw with her Alfa Romeo GTAM are the only Brits racing at this year's Classic.

Here is Roz pictured at the VHRR reception with Sir Jack Brabham.

The Natsoft results give the afore mentioned.

Bowe is also driving a Brabham BT 23B-2, according to Natsoft.

Went to Phillip Island Classic, as I do every year, this time on Saturday luckily. For supposedly warm day it was very cool with a strong Bass Strait gale requiring jumper and jacket.

John Bowe drove both the Jagermeister liveried March 741 3 litre DFV to second place behind Tom Tweedie Chevron F5000. Latter is seriously fast in a young mans hands.

Bowe also drove the Brabham BT 23B-2 Climax 2.5 but, in spite of fastest time in qualifying got passed around the outside by Damon Hancock Brabham BT23C 1.6 litre. Hancock drove it hard seemingly, way ahead of established other 1.6 stars.

Why lucky I went Saturday? The March and Chevron were no shows Sunday. Rumour seems the noise man said No. Many cars in program did not show, rather disappointing.

Now if the Great Commentator Simmo could tell me how to post photos I would.

There were three BT23Bs built, although used on circuits they seem to have been more at home on the hills with 2.5 Coventry Climax, two survive this one with Trevor Simpson in Sydney, the other BT23B-1 in the UK.

Can one get Natsoft to show the overall results rather than by class? It's very irritating!

Well Andrew choose the Times option, the second one on the right, not the Result option. This lists the times for each Entrant in order. Still haven't forgiven you for selling the Brabham BT36, was a bit slower on the weekend.

Back  to noise level; some of the older cars (names withheld) were a lot noisier. In the touring cars, one Falcon was absolutely ear "hurtin,' no ping though! Hmm I am deaf anyway.

I think this comes from the event organisers. It has been the same the last few years. It is not the way Natsoft usually does it.

PI is a pain for noise. The same catr can be ok one race and not the next. I presume the weather was very nice so usually less of a problem than the more usual overcast and rain! I got pinged in the late 90s in the early race. Later in the day it was not a problem. And really PI is a fair way from housing unlike Sandown that has simialr problems.

Roz Shaw pictured with her Alfa GTAM and John Bowe's matching March. Roz tells me that many cars got pinged along with the March, including Andy Newall's GT40 which later resolved the issue itself when it blew up!

Not  particularly wishing to side with the penguins but I have a house 12kms (as the penguin might wish it could fly) away from the Portimao circuit in Portugal. There are days that I can hear the cars and bikes in my backyard! That suits me........  So I guess sound travels further than we might think.

Thanks, when BT36-1 had the oversize engine that it came with from the UK it was awesome to drive, did at least explain why John Harper was so quick in it in the UK. I remember him suddenly slowing at Snetterton, I thought it was Christmas 'till the Clerk of the Course kindly asked if I'd seen the yellow flag and then gave me a leave pass for the remainder of the weekend.

Edit. BT36-2 could not have gone to a better home, Alan & Jocelyn are very dedicated to the history and will I hope get it re classified as a Group P car then it should run with the O's.

Glad I went on the Saturday, first time to P.I. and had a great time (strangely enough, was hot and sunny down there and cool and rainy back home in Qld!).

I shot a substantial number of photos, am in the process of sorting the good from the bad and hope to have some decent ones to post in the next few days.

Andrew thank you for the explanation on your BT36. Makes sense.

On the other hand the John Bowe driven BT 23B-2 was in the entrants list as " M Sports"? Probably a mistake. In the Program it was listed under the          O Racing section. 1966-1969. Why would they re classify it to P 1968-1972 so "it could run with the O's, because it did.

Not trying to start a spat as I have no doubt of your knowledge (and investment) in this but would appreciate a little elucidation.

Thanks,

Gary

No problem Gary, I noticed several other typos on the entry list. BT23B-2 should be 'O Racing'. I missed that the BT36 ran with M & O, the first list I saw it was listed as Q, oops! The organisers at P I are always open to requests to move to another group. They are really good at accommodating these moves as I found out in the past.

CAMS has a matrix for compatibility where they list P running with O, however that does not always go well with M drivers so organisers often slotted me in in with Q & R and being beaten up by RT4 Ralts is not much fun.

First time at PI since 1972.....

WOW what a circuit compared to Mallala.  Like Melbourne Cup compared to the Birdsville races!  (But Easter Mallala is the best, friendliest historic race meeting in Australia of course).

Poor little clubman couldn't keep up with the Formula Juniors down the straight but caught them up around the corners only to be blown off down the straight again!  After a safety car period the speed of the front runners even BEFORE we got to the straight blew me away!

Jim Doig (first time at PI since 1976 I think but in the same one owner car) had a Cape Barren Goose do a bit a pedestrian thing across the circuit in front of him, unfortunately his video camera wasn't working at that stage...  Pretty scary though.

Bit biased but would love to see photos of ASP 71 (me) or ASP 39 (Doig),  any photos of more exotic cars would be super too.  Back to work now and then on to (minor) repairs to car chassis and trailing arm and mudguard after one of the fore mentioned Formula Juniors and I had a minor disagreement in Honda corner, Mallala races on in 10 days (rerun of the heat cancelled recent event).

I just has a look at Natsoft.. on Fri you must have been on a tourist drive! you got down to some respectable times Sat though. Doig was a bit the same though he got quick. One owner high km Asp!

First practice yeah, one lap running in new gearbox, one & 1/2 laps under the safety car, one lap trying to find the circuit.... end of practice!  Practice 2 was damp but with a dry line so at least we could follow that to find the more or less right line...   51 cars in our race...  good fun.

Sorry to say it was about the only category I missed, not for lack of interest (quite the contrary, am considering an Historic FFord myself), just the races coincided with when I was either in the paddock or looking through some other display.

Shane, most of them wouldn't know what JKL is, we should be calling it "Early Historics" or something more meaningful than JKL.

Dick..it was an Historic Meeting...maybe it would be better to just describe JK&L in glowing terms rather than throwing hand grenade's?

I've got J/K/L somewhere, think I got most of the field as they rolled down pit lane, ditto the Group C/A tin tops, also a few shots from trackside later. Will ink them up when I get the chance

Welsor is listed as Rob Kilpatrick but no idea which actual car it is. Happy to be corrected but I suspect it might be the car formerly owned by Kerry Finn here in Qld.

I thought it prudent to hold off from posting all my photos - there were over 450 in total!

Apologies for lack of titles, don't have my programme/entry list handy. I have clearer shots of most of these cars from overhead in pit lane but for some reason photobucket has rotated them when I uploaded; when I sort that out I'll link them

i'm really surprised no one has mentioned the 40th anniversary of the Torana L 34.

There was a selection of both road and race cars from all over the country.
