I would like to see a 4 lap average like they do at indy. Would be interesting to see who could hold it together for 4 fast laps one after the other. Now that would build suspense.

I loved the 1hr format. The 12 laps were introduced because of the smaller teams were not able to afford so many sticky qualifying tires. With the six sets rule, you could have unlimited Q, you still only have six sets. Maybe they get used.
But I really miss those Q battles. Granted, the first half hour could be boring, but the commentator would bring you up to speed about the rumours before the real action started. Oh, do I miss those days. It was uncomplicated and everyone had an equal shot. No sissy penalties for blocking etc.

I sense nostalgia glasses... There is not much difference to today, except now you are forced to come out earlier. You still have the same quali battles, even more running (and no sitting in the garage for 30 minutes) and "equal shot". There were penalties back then, but just no so often. Really, what is so bad about getting a penalty, if you blocked someone? I think we saw already that when stewards finally gave harsh penalties, the drivers started to think and accept, that they are not alone on the racetrack.

Believe me, you just look through those "good old days" glasses, but I'm almost sure you would be bored if they would introduce this qualifying form again. And again, it would change nothing, except that you would have to wait 30 min for RBR, McLaren and Ferrari to come out... the rest is the same today.

Can you explain that again? It's quite complicated. How did we ever get our heads around that?

Well, that's a 14min edit of the last 30min in a one hour qualifying session. Of course it's not boring when you just get to see the highlights.

More importantly, although off-topic, the cars sound much better and look so much more nimble - like they can be thrown around like go-karts

Present format is very good.

Present format is very good.

But the present format for the top ten is almost one lap qualifying enforced by tire quota. The good thing about the the old 12 lap format was the build up of suspense as the big guns, more often than not, were gradually able to improve on their times and had a real chance to go almost all out during the dying moments. Hence battles like Imola 99 and Suzuka 00.

Do you realise there's only 1 car on track at a time, including the in- and outlap? That could be a session of some 3,5 hours at e.g. Singapore.

I liked the format better in the mid 90's and think it shouldn't have been changed personally. Friday 1 hour session, Saturday 1 hour session, 12 laps each. Fastest time by each driver on either day determines their grid position.
