On 18 January 2013 one of the most dazzling figures of Austrian motorsports died at the age of 96.
Wilhelm Löwinger was a speed skater who competed in the 1936 Winter Olympics when he was young. For years he was president of the ÖASC (Austrian Automobile Sports Club). He was one of the fathers of the European Hill Climb Championship, promoter of the airfield races at Innsbruck and Wien-Aspern and the architect of the Salzburgring.
It will be your loss if you cannot read German to fully appreciate Rainer Braun's obituary at Motorsport-total.com or Formel-Vau.eu.

Willy Lowinger is dead, the long-time president of the Austrian Automobile Sport Clubs (ÖASC), architect of the European Hill Climb Championship, owner of the Salzburgring and organizer of the legendary airfield race Innsbruck and Vienna-Aspern was in Austria as a motorsport monument. As an official, organizer and president of the Resident dictatorial ÖASC he helped the idle motor sports in the Alpine country to new acceptance and popularity. Rindt, Quester, Lauda, Marko and many others performed their racing debut at Löwingers events at airports in Innsbruck or Aspern, Gaisberg, Dobratsch or Timmelsjoch.

Always put the former speed skater and Olympic competitors importance to the country in terms of the sole word racing have. Jealous, he took care that nothing is possible without moving it in one direction or another. He eyed with suspicion the emergence of the ring in Zeltweg Austria, driven by the hated him "Knittelfeld Connection" under President Tiroch. "But I was faster than the Styrian idiots," Lowinger also proudly trumpeted in September 1969 at the opening of his in record time stamped out of the ground Salzburgring.

Many more mature stage performances accompanied his tenure as president, organizer, makers and managers for more than three decades. The "Director" (as he settled respond preferably) would tolerate no other gods and claimed in claim almost anything to have "invented", which ran in Austria and won. Rindt, Quester, Lauda, Marko, Koinigg, Berger and so forth, all his inventions. "Without me and my race," he used to forever smoldering cigar and the smoke half zugeschwollenem left eye to say, "all of which would have come to nothing, but I've let it start with me and so only made it famous."

This was of course for the best racing journalists in Austria, also be without him "nothing, absolutely nothing that would write solln's because without all of my beautiful race?" He has let them all stand to attention and accreditation often as idiots who treated the Prüllers, Zwickls, rotting Steiner, Höfer and of course me. A typical scenario Need? "Whoever you are, whatever you want, for whom do you write," Lowinger prevailed even to reporters who were well known to him. It was him all about lust for power, as well as ticket for the escort. "Buying the rabbit a standing room Korten," he summoned bass and let the next candidate to step forward to slap. Even before major racing teams and famous pilot startled Willy back not forcing teams and drivers with ridiculous fees at the start and pulled if need be by hand one Masten Gregory from the car because the retract as pole man of a sports car race without a valid parking ticket into the paddock its Salzburgring wanted.

In fact, the tickets and parking tickets, the "Pickerln", a chapter in itself. The brown card Willy was not a second suitcase from his hand, he took it to the bathroom at night and he stuffed it under his pillow in the hotel bed - it can 'to him to have someone steal something. When the young Formula V debutant Niki Lauda had lost at Salzburgring his ticket and sheepishly asked for replacement, summoned Willy the poor guy: "Wannst kneel now and sogst, Mr. President, am I a fool, forlorn because i mei Korten lifted, then get a neie. " What did the Niki forced as he was ordered ...

Willy was all the same person -. Dictator and self-promoter of the grace of God, amiable crooks and pathological cheapskate, vain director and merciless dictator, tough negotiators and helpful friend He could cheat you wonderful and give the feeling that you've made the grade best deal in the world with him. Willy was simply a phenomenon, an unbelievable guy, the last of its kind, feared, hated, loved, adored.

His last major appearance was Lowinger, who co-founded with motorsport legends like Fangio, Huschke von Hanstein and Carlo Abarth was by you and the European Hill Climb Championship, 90th at his Birthday. About 100 old friends, enemies and companions came to Vienna Technical Museum, to honor with their presence the grand old man of the Austria-Motorsports and revel in a never-ending amount of anecdotes and memories.

If the high politics and the entire motorsports notables of the country, a lot of important people and former starter from abroad appear, you can call it a tribute to a racer-filled life. And when the renowned Viennese journalist Helmut Zwickl and Heinz Prueller even often victims desolate Lowinger attacks, together recite the eulogy for the birthday boy, this is more than just a chore, much more. It is thanks to a man who has helped his small country to great racing glory.

In the following years, Willy was brave and we can still call each other often. But then he complained increasingly aching limbs, loss of weight and increasing decay, but the indispensable cigar it still tasted. The move from his beloved home in the Vienna Daringergasse in a nursing home was inevitable. Three months before his 97th Birthday died Willy Lowinger, the lovable rogue, peaceful. As winner of the "Golden Merit of the Republic of Austria", he remains one of those iconic figures who have their posterity the most beautiful stories. Stories that are long gone and will never give more.

Sounds like a colourful character, condoloences to Willy's family and friends. RIP

Ah jaaa, der Löwinger...

Niki Lauda had some nice things to say about him over the years. I think "clown" was the least offending...

A "Hasen" is, of course, a "bird" in this context! ;)
