The first race of the NASCAR season is upon us! It's the season-opening exhibition race at Daytona that used to be known as the Budweiser Shootout. Now it's got some lame name...see the title.

Jayski: http://www.jayski.co...013shootout.htm

The "tune in schedule" feature has been removed from NASCAR.com. If you know how to find something similar, please show us!

Get ready for some BOOGITY BOOGITY BOOGITY!

I'm so pissed I am going to miss the 500, hopefully I can figure out a way to watch it while driving back from BC. At least I will see some of the Shootout or whatever it is.

It's all a bit American Idol isn't it?

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The format for Saturday night's Sprint Unlimited has been set at 30 laps, 25 laps and 20 laps.

The format for the non-points event involving 2012 pole winners and previous Unlimited winners was decided by a fan vote. Fifty-five percent voted for this format. Twenty-three percent voted for 40 laps, 20 laps and 15 laps.

Fans still have the opportunity to vote on two other elements for the 8 p.m. race. They have until the green flag drops to vote for the type of pit stop each team must make after the first 30-lap segment. The options are four tires, two tires or no stop at all.

Fans will have until the start of the second segment to vote for the number of cars that will be eliminated after the 25-lap second segment. The choices are none, two, four and six.

Votes can be cast on NASCAR's mobile phone app -- NASCAR Mobile '13 -- or at NASCAR.com/SprintUnlimited.

As a reminder, here's the Sprint Unlimited line-up:

Aric Almirola, Marcos Ambrose, Greg Biffle, Kurt Busch, Kyle Busch, Dale Earnhardt Jr., Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Kevin Harvick, Jimmie Johnson, Kasey Kahne, Matt Kenseth, Joey Logano, Mark Martin, Juan Pablo Montoya, Ken Schrader, Tony Stewart and Martin Truex Jr.

Can't get enough of that sweet democracy? Vote MORE!

Starting positions will be determined by a vote of fans in attendance on race day. They'll have three choices: Number of career wins (most to least); 2012 final NASCAR Sprint Cup driver point standings, and order in which drivers won their first Coors Light Pole last season, beginning with last year's Daytona 500.

Yep, it's only for 2012 pole winners, and previous Unlimited event winners who raced at least 1 Cup race in 2012.

Alright, thanks... I must have been confusing this with the heat races they use to determine the grid for the 500. So this is more in the same vein as the All-Star race at Charlotte then?

Here's some info regarding 500 pole qualifying and the Bud Duel:

Sunday's Daytona 500 Coors Light Pole qualifying, which also airs live on FOX at 1:00 p.m. ET, is unique in that only the top two positions will be guaranteed.
Remaining qualifiers are seeded by qualifying speed into Thursday's Budweiser Duel, two 150-mile races from which the majority of the final starting grid for the Daytona 500 is set.

The front-row qualifiers and the highest 15 finishers in each Duel – excluding the front row from qualifying – will earn a spot in the Daytona 500. The next four fastest Coors Light Pole qualifiers will make up positions 33-36. Six provisional starting positions (37 through 42) will be awarded to the highest eligible car owners in final 2012 standings not otherwise qualified for the race. The 43rd position will be filled by the most recent past champion participating in a 2012 event. Should no past champion be eligible, the final position goes to the next highest owner in 2012 points.

What's a tire run normally at Daytona? 40 laps seems short, I did like the idea of 70+. Slide-o-rama.

Daytona 500 entry list has been posted.

Wasn't aware Sparklehouse were the only two rookies in Cup. Should we just hand the trophy to Ricky now?

OLB, with some much stuff belonging to the 500 maybe you should expand this thread title to the speedweeks, the whole thing is really just a build up for the race.

Nah. Buildup to the actual Daytona 500 doesn't start until the Unlimited is over. We'll start the Daytona points race thread right after.

That would be funny, if true, since Smoke had to buy Team Owner Points to guarantee PSP in the grid :p

If I understood it correctly

Nah, it is only enough to guarantee her a spot if everything is rained out at Phoenix and Vegas. It won't help at Daytona.

Hey are any of you guys signed up for the Raceview/race tracking/listening products through NASCAR.com? An audit of my credit card statements shows they double billed me late last year AND charged me $10 more than the going rate. I went to the page on the new site and clicked "manage membership" and got a 404-Not Found error.

This seriously sucks. I've been getting busier with life anyway and this product has been getting crappier and more buggy every year. If I can't get this straightened out I will seriously be watching much less NASCAR.

Daytona speedweeks are generally the only time of the year I care about stock cars but the Shootout (or whatever it's called) and Duels never excited me, they're just sort of pointless while waiting for the main event... but the ARCA race tomorrow, that's different! Really looking forward to that one. 45 cars, incl Julian Jousse (!!)

P1. John Wes Townley
P2. Milka Duno

Indeed.
How is anyone supposed to compete against an endless supply of chickenmomey, or South American despot money - with a side of subliminal tobacco advertising - even in these junior categories? ):

Is Camel Cigarettes secretly funding Venezuelan Duno?
Pretty obvious to me.

Who else is there to turn to? Have you tried the porn industry Ross? (as a sponsor)
There is potential synergy with the woody paint job you'll be sporting.

EDIT: Damn, looks like Milka is trying to milk that angle too.
Tough times, Ross.

Back in 2004 Playboy UK was offering like 50k if any of the contestants on Big Brother had sex and were shown on camera.

I was living in Italy at the time and called up their marketing guy and asked if no one claimed it could I have the 50k to race in the Renault Clio Cup.

That was actually a fun conversation.

No one had sex, no one went racing.

I wish Camel cigarettes would sponsor me. I'm smoking a Camel Gold right now. As for what they could sponsor me to do, I've no idea. Just sponsoring me with the ability not to have to pay $9.50 for a pack would be nice.

Yeh but Harvick slipped through unscathed.

And yep, new dryers. No more jet fuel. No cars on track. One pass and it's dry.
Go back a page in the 2013 thread, I posted some pics from Bob Pockrass' twitter.

Was thinking that number of poles would be a better choice than all of those, but it might well be it's so spread out it wouldn't be worth figuring out. Not that starting position means a thing here anyway, unless the new cars race drastically differently.

Glad to see this format back. It brings back meaning to the qualifying sessions, and I'd imagine sponsors would encourage their teams to give their all so as not to miss a prime time Daytona race. Might even reusher in some old tricks and controversy :D
