i don't understand this 'danica' thing regarding engine problem. normally it's the job of trackside boffins to monitor engine parameters, is it not??? since when a driver had authority to declare weather engine is good or bad, he/she may indicate that it's sounding/feeling funny, but the decision to come to pit box is teams, isn't it???

or is it that NASCAR is yet to adopt to 'Telemetry' and ECU ???

They don't allow live telemetry and lots of other things. This is to keep costs and technology down and also to try to prevent cheating.

that's quite strange TBH, if i'm not mistaken, MES supplies ECU, it woundn't have been that complex/costly to relay telemetry, cosidering each car must have atlest 2/3 cameras sending data (even BTCC have telemetry), but then again, they must have good reasons to do so.

They don't even have pit speed limiters. They like to keep as much as possible in the driver's control. Also they have 5 lug nuts on the wheels like a road car to keep it 'traditional' and add another skill.

I can generalize too and say that the fans who follow F1 and only F1 are some of the most intolerant, elitist, immature dickheads I know.
But, higher ground etc etc.

;)

I would say that they are dickheads first and foremost, who happen to follow F1, they'd probably be dickheads whatever sport they followed.

MES supplies ECU

If im not mistaken those ECU's only came in last year. I recall in some earlier races teams complaining about the units until someone figured out the units were fine, it was the way teams were using them.

Interesting guide to read, some good useful info there for those a little new to NASCAR.

I wasn't very happy reading the comments towards the bottom of it though, the bloke got obsessed with trying to prove 'how' NASCAR is better than F1, some of the reasons are really pushing it. He's basically saying F1 can be done with your eyes shut and NASCAR drivers are the 'best of the best'. There was no way the race on Sunday was anything spectacular, it was a grind to watch until the last laps.

Original article: http://gordonkirby.c...t_is_no373.html

Yeah, that was definitely overselling it, and it had more than a slight whiff of inferiority complex. Stewart's comment about there being only two corners on an oval, while many more corners on the road course, and thus a mistake on an oval is far costlier, was very silly. There are many more laps in the oval races than there are on road course races, and less chances for a do-over with full course cautions.

its actually more like 3 or 5 corners at a d shape track like daytona, charlotte the front stretch feels like 2 corners and its surprisingly easy to get wrong and get sucked into the wall

Oh ****.
Michael Annett has a fracture and dislocation in his sternum. Will undergo surgery. Out indefinitely.

This really sucks. I had kinda discounted him as a driver prior to last year due to him being second fiddle to Steven Wallace at Rusty Wallace Racing and having a personal sponsor, but last year really changed that (so much so that I had him replacing Ambrose if he had left back to Australia). I had him as a title contender this year.

Hopefully, it's not the entire season.

He impressed me on more than one occasion last year. One hell of a setback.

Almirola will only be a fill-in it looks like. I wonder who could slot into that role full-time?

Probably won't have a full-time driver until Annett comes back so it'll probably be three or four drivers filling in. Personally, I would stick Cole Whitt in there (or if it was in my dreams, the return of Colin Braun), but it'll probably be Almirola, Josh Wise, and the like. Maybe Ambrose if he is still out when the Glen rolls around.

Obviously, I don't know how extensive the surgery or what the recovery rate is, but I think Annett will be back sometime this season, even if it's at the end.

That's right, Cole Whitt. Man it's easy for these guys to fall off your radar.
That's a dependable move IMO.
Although if we are wishing really hard, Cale Gale for me.

I too believe Michael will return this season at some point. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

Swerving back to the ridiculous...
I just got a snap from a friend who was working at Daytona..
Look at the idiocy he spotted...."Hey girl let git a bitter view from right hair"

Jp

This was the reason for the first caution, apparently (according to MRN).

Think Truck
It's pretty much as few of the guys said, it's really seat of the pants feel for the car.
JPM pointed that out. Overpowered and undertired is another huge factor.
Four wheel drifting at Atlanta is a given. Check some vid out on how they slide off the corners there. Talk about trust in Goodyear. Yikes.
And to me the absolutely grueling part of NASCAR is the grind of 30 odd races, long and hot ones.
It's a tough ass series and all the jokes about fat asses running in it is malarky.
And that takes nothing away from F1 at all.
Two distinctly different racing series, and I love them both.

Would that make Annett the first to miss race time due to injury (apart from Vickers) since Earnhardt's death?

I'm pretty sure there that would be the case Cup only, can't remember Nationwide/busch as well.

How would we classify Earnhardt concussion?

Yes, we had Jr missing Chase races last year because of race-related injuries, and dont forget the horrible NNS crash that sidelined Eric McClure. Also last year.

Sterling Marlin was out after Kansas in 2002 through the end of the season after an accident, broken vertebrae if I remember correctly. Steve Park had a freak Busch series accident under caution too that put him out for the season as well. It was at Darlington but can't recall the year.

By all rights, Keselowski should have probably sat out the Pocono race four days after breaking his ankle in that test at Road Atlanta.

Instead, the darn fool won it and sparked his career to the next level

On Saturday Danish national television had a short story on the major crash at Daytona last week. Nothing unusual in that, mainstream media here only takesan interest in motor racing i someone dies or a Dane wins at Le Mans - but the presenter ended th story by telling that on Sunday, Daytona would be host to the famous Indy 500 race

Interesting little nugget. I'm always interested in the Northern European/Scandinavian take on things.

Here in Norway I didn't see any television channels running news on it (though Viasat broadcasts all Sprint Cup races live, with swedish commentator in the US ad breaks - wey, we got coverage at all times!!)

In Norway the newspapers ran a story that said "At least 30 spectators injured after NASCAR-crash, and actually the whole piece was well written. They also ran a "Jimmie Johnson won Daytona 500 after accident-packed weekend".
Also a good article, but they said that "Danica Patrick didn't manage any better than 8th, after starting the race from Pole, the first woman to do so". And also wrote a bit about "potential lawsuits".

Surprised over the good articles really!

Technically, I think only about 15 or so people were injured by the wreck itself.

However, it's true that at least 28 people were treated at the scene.

The thing is, a typical February Nationwide race at Daytona is good for about 10-20 medical incidents, typically people getting way too drunk/high, people tripping and falling going up stairs (possibly combined with being intoxicated), that type of thing that happens whenever tens of thousands of fun seeking people descend on a venue.

So the typical stuff got mixed in with the injuries from the crash and reported as being due just from the crash, when this is simply not true.

After all, the media have to sell ad space, right? And 30 injuries is a better story than 15.

Well, based on the fact that Norwegian media often fails to get rally-stories right (even though we had Petter Solberg win the champ in 03, and have two drivers in top teams now). I'm amazed that they got the two stories so correct as they did.

Everyone injured has been released from hospital besides two.
A man who has 4 broken ribs, and his 14yo brother who has a collapsed lung.

Oh I don't mean to impugn Norwegian reporting at all, it says the same thing right here on Autosport as well as every media outlet in the United States.
