hey people!I am a long time lurker from Nairobi,Kenya and I finaly decided to get myself registered!
I am a massive F1 and football fan (cant choose between the two) and there are some comparisons that I have noticed between the top two men in the F1 and soccer-
For me,vettel is just like messi because-
-they are both young but very succesful for their ages.(four time world player of the year and bucketfull of trophies,vettel-3x WDC)
-They let their talents do the talking ie they never hype/praise themselves.
-They both come across as humble with both feet on the ground.journalists widley say they are the most approachable people in their respective sports.
-They excel under pressure.
Interestingly, they have the same flaws namely
- Both are accused of only exelling in the best team ie barcelona is head and shoulders above any team in the world, same could be said of redbull.
-messi and vettel are always being told to prove themselves in other teams before they can be considered great.
-They both behave badly when things dont go their way.
-They are not considered complete player/driver eg messi isnt good at set pieces or heading the ball, vettel is accused of lacking race craft.
So what do you guys think?I am a F1 fan first but I have a soft spot for shumacher and in extension ferrari and vettel beacause he has a r/ship with both.cant wait to hear rom you guys.

Hi! Fellow F1 and football fan here!

I guess there are some superficial similarities, but just as someone had mentioned, they are in rather different sports with heavily contrasting personalities. And while Messi gets heavy plaudits from most while excelling with Barcelona, I do think this forum is mostly of the opinion Sebastian shouldn't get the plaudits because he is in a Red Bull. So I think as compared to Messi Sebastian still has more to prove.

But my personal football - F1 comparison would be Bayern Munich and Sebastian's 2011 season. Complete domination and wins all around!

Messi is pure class all by himself, Vettel is dependant on his man(newey)/machine. For me Vettel still hasnt proven his worth like Alonso/Hamilton.
Vettel may be the likes of David Villa.Good but not great.

Never read something this stupid. Messi in football is unchallenged. Everyone agrees he's the best. General opinion.
But with Vettel it's different. He isn't even regarded as the best in F1. Maybe a rb/barca comparison would have made more sense.

Well lets all hope that Messi's showing yesterday is a sign of what Vettel is going to accomplish this year. :D

I once employed Messi and Vettel, unfortunately Messi was driving my car while Vettel played football - We never won anything...

Bit harsh on Mr Villa. All time top scorer for Spain and plays for the best team in the world.

Both will probably be be seen as the GOAT in their respective disciplines after they retire, but that is about all you can say for comparisons sake.

A guy makes an effort to introduce himself and start a post, which is no more silly than 3/4 of the crap that gets spouted around here, with a detailed opening and so many people want to jump all over him offering nothing but 1 sentence insults/criticsms and stupiud gifs.

Welcome, welcome!

I agree that most young superstar champions - young guns - have a number of things in common. Mostly because they are young, so of course they won't have played/driven for many teams or had all the 1000000 experiences of those other 'greats' in the sport who have been around for nearly twice as long and experienced twice as much.

Of course those types of comments completely miss the boat. Young amazing talent, allowed to show it's brilliance at so young an age means a lot of things had to come together at the right time - INCLUDING the young talent. Sure some proven champion could have stood in the shoes of these younger guys - but that is not the point. The point is that at so young an age and with so little experience, and with untried focus, determination, will, effort, etc., they stood in those shoes themselves and left their own footprints.

So ignore the nay sayers. These two athletes are very special and definitely share a lot in common leading to their masterful performances and early success.

Lewis is more like the Ibrahimovic of F1. Incredible natural talent, amazing to watch, but somehow not quite as successful as he should be.

I'd say this is pretty spot on

Ibra

Also give the guy a break, he was just trying to get involved on the forum with a view that I'm sure not just he himself shares, it makes a difference to the usual threads that always end in name calling and other unnecessary arguments.

Their success at the same age is pretty staggering and they seem well on the path to being GOAT or being very close to being GOAT in both their sports.

Ronaldo>>>>Messi :p

Don't judge me

Somebody seems to have read the forum, since Vettel was asked about the Messi comparison during the test. He just replied that one of the similarities they share is that they are both not the tallest athletes. :)

It is quite obvious that there are a lot of similarities between both - it is a matter of the sample labeld: young, extremely successful on an individual and team level. Other things are arguably a bit more telling and among them the humility. Messi has always put the team ahead of him, praising his teammates greatly and saying that without him he wouldn't be there. Vettel has done the same, time and time again. I still remember the thank you, I love you guys after Brazil and once again the eagerness to play to down your part and to praise your team. Those two are guys which seem to think that there is no I in TEAM.

But the most obvious bit is of course their mighty height ;)

You have raised some interesting points kenkip and these are just a few I agree with.

-messi and vettel are always being told to prove themselves in other teams before they can be considered great.

- Both have been groomed from a young age by their respective clubs/teams (well Vettel was groomed for F1 by Marko from his early teens).
- You're right about armchair pundits saying Messi and Vettel need to prove themselves elsewhere. Messi not so much at club level, as a fair amount of criticism is leveled at him at international level. At Barca he's world-class, but with Argentina he's been underwhelming in the big games. Likewise with Vettel, some people won't see him as one of the greats until he races for another team.

- Both are accused of only exelling in the best team ie barcelona is head and shoulders above any team in the world, same could be said of redbull.

That's true, would Messi be regarded in the same vein if he started at a lower club and worked his way up? Regardless, both are in the best teams of their respective sports as they've earned their stripes and show they deserve to be there.

Interesting comparison.

 What about Messi? The likes of Moss and Ascanelli have compared Seb to Clark And Senna. Can Messi be compared to them? Ever seen him in a single seater?;)

I'd say the Vettel and Barry comparison is quite valid, in that they both have very good teams, and so don't have to do anything special... And that their managers can be a bit petty when they lose! :stoned:

I think that Vettel doesn't stand out enough from his team to be a Messi, I think that's more Raikonnen (quiet, immense natural talent), and then Hamilton is the Gareth Bale (carrying his team). The way Alonso's going with his tattoos he's well on course to match Ronaldo, all he needs to do now is change his hair in a pit stop a la Ronaldo at half time in the Euros this summer

This thread is rather silly isn't it :drunk:

You don't mention him colliding with Senna (I think it was) in Abu Dhabi? Nor do I remember Alonso running wide more than once in Interlagos. Which you interestingly mentioned, yet conveniently forgot Vettel doing the same in Australia.

Lastly, do you consider a penalty due bad driving behavior to be a mistake? Because I do.

Nevertheless, we are drifting off topic, but your old thread does actually somewhat contradict your point. :drunk:

Dude. Why do you have to come in and **** on every thread, making an argument and criticising every driver or team to make Alonso look better? Grow up, it's just Motorsport.

Alonso lost, get over it.
