Just finished the book " Wings of Gold" an oral history of Naval Aviation in the Pacific, in WWII.
The author states that a naval airman named John Von Newman was instrumental in the development of the Atom bombs
At the end of WWII.
Could this be the Johnny Von Newman who raced Ferrari's in the '50's from California?

Lots of potential for confusion here. As Regazzoni also mentioned, there was a man named John von Neumann (not Newman) (1903-1957) who worked on the development of the atom bomb and who is a truly legendary figure of 20th century mathematics and physics, and one of the founders of computer science as we know it today.
He was a colorful character, but he never raced cars, nor flew planes for the Navy. In the USA, he lived in Princeton most of the time, not California.
However, he was definitely nicknamed "Johnny".
