According to Barry Green's book the race was won by Peter Whitehead (Ferrari) from Reg Hunt (Maserati 250F)and Kevin Neal (Maserati A6GCM). Then followed Reg Parnell and Lex Davison in Ferraris and the Lago-Talbots of Doug Whiteford and Owen Bailey.

The only other finisher was Reg Smith's ex-Brabham rear-engined Cooper Bristol.

There were two feature races at the 'Olympic' meeting at Albert Park, the Tourist Trophy on 25 November and the AGP the following weekend. The Bryson Cup was a supporting race at the TT

Hi I was reading an article in a great magazine called Motorsports Legends in the May/June 2012 issue there is a great article called When Maserati Ruled Australian Tracks. In the last paragraph it states, The old Albert Park track was bulldozed when the current F1 circuit was built, however a relic of the old track remains today. Down by the Aquatic Centre is a 150 meter section of road named Albert Road Drive South and it starts at the roundabout near the outdoor pool & ends abruptly in parkland.
Not living in Melbourne I am trying to locate on the streetview website. Is this it? Did it go past the Sports House building on the right?

We need Terry Walker to come in here...

He produced maps of both circuits, much of the original road was used in the new one.

 sorry, that link was working when I posted it earlier today when when was on my Ipad.
But if you type Old Aughtie Drive, Albert Park, Victoria, Australia in to Streetvew. It shows a roundabout & you go in to your right, past Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre. then do you follow that road till the left hand bend & you have the "sports House" on you right hand side as you go around the bend

I haven't been to Albert Park in ages, but the original tree lined and narrow section of Aughtie Drive should still be there. Between the lake and the back of the pit garages. It was sports fields on the outside of the original Aughtie Drive that were carved up to create the pit garages and pit straight area. It was a neglected bit of tip before the redevelopment!

I still have visuals of seeing and hearing Reg Hunt run his Maserati 300S down the still original long Aughtie Drive, during either the 1993 or 1994 Albert Park Classic's. He was definitely reliving the 1950's with the speed he attained. Fortunately for the enthusiasts gathered it was still a slightly less Health and Safety conscious era. They also ran the cars in period correct direction, anti-clockwise.

We do, of course, have some first class (shot by Maurie Maurice) colour movie of the '56 Moomba meeting there...

Converted to DVD of course.

That truncated section of Old Albert Park Road from the roundabout east in indeed a vestige of the original circuit. The Roundabout naturally wasn't there in the 50s. Aughtie Dr ran north and came out at Cecil Street; there was a simple T-road where that piece of road met Aughtie Dr. The section of Aughtie Rd as was (now a bicycle etc path)  between the pits and the lake, has been drastically narrowed but follows the old alignment.

So it is a real bit of history that the Historic raceing cars use it going to and from the circuit for their runs.I took a lot of photos there last year.
