The cameras have been moved to the nose again, away from the wing's central section.

How do you guys tell? I can never see it :|

Mercedes updates according to AMuS:
-Front wing
-Lower downforce [drag would be more appriate word i think] rear wing (which should have been used in Malaysia already but was shelved due to rain.
-Brake ducts
-Cooling

The windtunnel predicts 0,2 - 0,3 s.

Front wing may be lower D/F too with the bigger slot - perhaps to balance the rear.

Numbers like that always baffle me. Do they mean around this particular track/Shanghai? Or perhaps some standardised track? Find that hard to believe, if so. Or are they just a guide for how impactful these upgrades should be, ie, moderate-big update package.

That's why they give a range. That is if this was leaked by the team.
The gain will vary from track to track. Only the team knows the exact numbers and reference tracks but there is no need for them to convey that much detail. A ballpark figure suffices.

I don't think the flaps are different, it's just an illusion.

Look at it here - http://www.motorspor...ton/0484561.jpg this is the new one, versus this, http://formula1techa...-jerez-14-f.jpg I think they've actually removed the piece between the two cascades.

Sadly we wont really know the true paces until Q3 tomorrow when the top guys put in 100% but at the moment the car looks good.

So far so good. They are developing the car during the flyaways in a way that is at least comparable to any of the top teams, and it even seems to work. The car looks very handy and well balanced on track so far, and times are decent too. Looking forward to the next session myself too.

I haven't seen the stint times at all. 27 laps on the mediums is promising, bt I have no idea of the relative pace coming with it. Race preparation seemed to be the only focus, really interested in those stint times now.

Race pace looks good. Lewis did 27 laps on the prime during that session so they seem to hang on well enough. Could be like in Australia with everyone using the option for ~5 laps then dumping them for the remainder of the race. Over one lap I'm sure they'll be up there, I expect 2 cars on the first three rows, with this being Nico's best chance of outqualifying Lewis yet and maybe for a little while.

They went out quite a bit later than the Mercs, and Rosberg's time was only 0.4s slower anyway.

well, the 27 lap stint is actually something like a 17 lap stint, but it does not look bad at all. Don't know about the level of fuel though. It most certainly still looks promising. Don't know where the 27lap info came from exactly?

It was 27 laps on the hard tyre for the entire session, so that by the time he finished the stint the tyres were 27 laps old, obviously.

well, if that is a fact, it looks even better in terms of degradation. Gonna be an interesting morning tomorrow, I think. Not to speak of the race itself.

Lewis on Facebook:

We've made a good start today but there is a lot of work to do overnight. I'm hoping that we can continue to improve as I spend more time in the car. We'll find out in qualifying where we really are.

Looks like Mercedes have seats for their drivers now, also looks like the car is running a smaller rear wing.

Mostly from the upper flap I think. Runs at a more aggressive, RBR-like AoA.

Hopefully Mercedes is able to get good life/times out of the softs like in Australia.

Where was it said Brawns not sure if it is worth running in Q3?

I wonder if they did that if they'd split it, run one but not the other car.

must say even myself, a big optimist here, wouldn't have expected Mercedes to be so competitive. Great car for this circuit, nothing extraordinary, but very good.

They cant just sit out Q3. You can do that if you're not confident of qualifying top 6 maybe, but as a pole favorite, you've gotta go out there. You lose too much time to the front runners in the first stint running behind a bunch of people. Seconds a lap.

Had they been looking at row three or four, but had the race-pace they have shown, then they should've considered sitting out Q3.
It's a luxury challenge to have though, which shows that the outlook for this weekend is good.

Yes but if they will have to pit after 5 laps on the soft tyre then they should be able to leapfrog the front runners being on the harder tyre, at that point you'd have track position.

those who start on hards still have to run the softs and if recent history has shown anything...the softer option does not really work out at the end of the race.

Silverstone 2012, Australia 2013 n so on.

I'd stick with the conventional strategy

With Buttons de-laminated tyre issue today, could a team get away with pole on soft then have a major lockup into turn 1 on return to pits damaging tyres then replacing for "safety" with new softs for the race

Possibly, but probably not worth taking the risk of them saying "start on them and pit on the first lap".

I think the track is going to be kinder to the tyres tomorrow and sunday as more rubbers get layed on it, just like Sepang. By sunday, I expect the tyres especially the soft to last much longer. Won't suprise me a bit if some cars do 15 laps on the soft on race day.

Hypothetical thought:

What if they qualify on the medium, and maybe get 7t/8th place (could be they have an edge off 1 sec on FI/Mcl).

They can then start the race with the mediums, have a much longer first stint. Hamilton did 27 laps on his mediums today and still was competetive. Theoretically, they could do 3 stints of 18 laps on the mediums (2 stops). At lap 54 change to the softs and have two fast laps on the softs before they explode after s/f.

Also, they might do a 1 stopper on the mediums, to change to softs 2-5 laps before the end of the race.

Would this be a feasible strategy, or am I talking rubbish? :)
