Just watching the motor racing prog. on BBC4 last eve, I was struck by the widespread smoking of cigarettes by drivers (and others), leading me to wonder if any of the current crop of F1 drivers are smokers?

I rather assume 'not', which leads me to the REAL question: Who was the last F1 driver to smoke, during his F1 career?

(PS. I make specific reference to cigarettes, as there might be other substances smoked for relaxation, which are not my interest!)

I don't know about recent drivers, but I remember watching the Clive James Formula One show on YouTube ( it was for the beginning of the 1997 season ) and I recall Jan Magnussen being a smoker; Jackie Stewart joked that he would need to be able to breathe to drive a racecar.

Pescarolo--there is a photo in an early French biography as a student sitting in a class room with a microscope AND a fat Gitane (Mais??) or Gauloise between his lips...

Evidently Jackie Stewart's disapproval didn't dissuade Jan Magnussen from smoking - he still enjoyed the sponsor's product when he drove for Penske in 1996.

Mika Salo sneaked the occasional ciggie in the back of the truck at Tyrrell in 1995.

Not an expert at all in this matter but I guess it's still smoking - often just combining substances - so Thomas Enge could be mentioned.

I was expecting that somebody would have dropped James Hunt's name by now.....

IIRC, Schumacher (M) allowed himself a cigar at Christmas in his heyday., though that hardly meets the OPs critera.
