Gilette - a commentator's dream!

'And that was a close shave for Jenson!'

'Perez makes it over the line by a whisker!'

I think the birth of the Virgin team knackered the commentators enough.

They were also sponsor of Renault/Lotus in 2011. Not sure if on car but here:
http://blogs.bettor....a-1-news-a95973

These relations came and have gone with Senna, as he has personal sponsoring from Gillette (P&G Brazil), that's why you see them (Gillette) on the Aston Martin now:
http://www.brunosenn...ship-at-sebring

http://www.newstyle....nna-racing-day/

Lotus/Renault has a deal with Unilever (Rexona brand) now, which is a main competitor of P&G (Gillette) in the consumer goods FMCG market.

Gillette (P&G) have F1 "on the radar", if this amounts to a title sponsorship with McLaren, remains to be seen.

Or they just didn't want to wait until next year and decided to get started with a smaller sponsorship package as a prelude to title sponsorship next year.

Does Checo need to shave yet? ;)

Interesting development, but worth to note, that the deal is not with P&G per se, it's "only" with their regional branch (Asia) and for a specific product group.
Very similar to the deal Senna has with P&G Brazil/South America.

While good news, I doubt somewhat that any local branch, would have the financial muscle and "freedoms" to sign off on a title sponsoring campaign.
As you have seen, Gillette/P&G Asia hat F1 already as part of their local campaign (see F1 ticket promotion for the race in Malaysia above).
This seems to be a extension of this activity, which would make sense, as they now have a "face" (or two) for the campaign, so to speak.

If this is a "toe in the water" exercise for a greater, more global campaign in the future, which would need to be signed off at head quarter, remains to be seen.
I think, this will dependent on the results of the current exercise and how well/bad Unilever fares with it's own Renault/Lotus campaign (Rexona, Clear) in terms
of increased sales, market share and brand recognition.

Seeing, that Gillete is already market leader in many important global markets, they have limited growth potential in this respect.
Their marketing spending will reflect this, from this perspective a title sponsoring seems unlikely - IMHO, which does not mean it is impossible.

Still, at the end of the day, it's good news, even a small deal is better then no deal, and it's a "good" brand to be associated with.
So it wont hurt on a B2B/ cross branding basis, and may opes other doors/opportunities for the future.

GSK makes a lot more sense and he wisely points out why it won't be Lucozade, though the new owners may continue a small relationship.

That was pretty much confirmed when the rear wing of the car was sponsored by a division of Claro in Barcelona.

http://www.caranddri...mclaren-en-2014

Seems to match all rumours leading up to this. Vodafone bows out at the end of 2013 after 7 seasons to be replaced by Claro or Telmex in 2014.

It was the first time Clarovideo was on the McLaren though, wasn't it? I saw it and actually couldn't remember whether I'd seen it before or not...

Holy cow, that's the worst 'Billboard livery' i've ever seen. it's like they stamped logos wherever there was some free space. i had to concentrate to find gillette in all this mess.

At least in those days, teams didn't have trouble filling their sponsorship roster. I'm sure all of them would still love to 'paste' their cars full of stickers if the opportunity was still there. A lot of cars nowadays are shockingly 'white'.

Sponsorship these days is about much more than the number of stickers on the car.

The best funded teams historically have not been full of different stickers.

Am I the only person who, in the words of Jeremy Clarkson, is nursing a semi at the sight of this? That's what a McLaren should look like!

If Telemex can become title sponsor and get the car to look like this I am all in favour of it.

However it won't look like that because the red and white livery was Malboro sponsorship and they no longer sponsor McLaren.

Also you can remove the Shell sponsor as McLaren's fuel and oil sponsor is Exxon Mobil (Mobil1).

Claro as a major sponsor might give McLaren an excuse to use the old Japanese racing colours of pearl-with-red-sun.

Such a shame both the Claro and Telmex logos are ugly as sin. Especially the Claro one, whoever did that one should be shot.

Zak Brown, f1 sponsor guru said Carlos Slim was unlikely to go for title sponsorship, although he may take space on the car.

Looks like an advert for Marlboro and the rear wing looks like a Ferrari. This is why McLaren won't go back to the 70s/80s look as it was a cigarette advert.

It was conjecture on Zak's part. It's on the James Allen podcast.

They're a bit more involved than just a sponsor but I'm getting pedantic there. ;)

i dont' think mclaren will ditch the 'Chrome' livery theme, it seems to be the Mclaren bit of the car (very polished and spotless depicting the teams philosophy), like silver is the color of MGP.

'By the end of the year' was what was previously indicated.  No doubt it will be announced once the Vodafone contract ends, so some time after Brazil.

Looks like a crap Toyota livery, you can't copy a Marlboro livery if it's not Marlboro... Lotus proved that with their lame jps tribute effort!

We'll find out in December what the new 'package' of sponsors is. And probably not before.

FWIW I reckon Telmex/Clarovideo will be in that mix, but not as title sponsor.

Will be interesting to see if they retain Lucozade as a sponsor through Suntory rather than GSK once the deal goes through.

If not, there would be no conflict in getting a new drinks sponsor.

How about a Mclaren with a traditional orange Lucozade livery? Current sponsor GlaxoSmithKline just sold Ribena and Lucozade to a Japanese firm for £1.35bn so they may have a few bob to spend?  Would be a nice Japanese tie in with the future Honda engines too...

If they didn't keep Glaxo as a sponsor a black and chrome Monster Mclaren would be neat?

GSK have a wider partnership with McLaren, so it's quite likely one of their brands will be on the car in some form.

what I find interesting is that GSK had been looking for Lucozade buyer since this past April. They say the drink section doesn't fit their portfolio, that's fine, but then such important managerial direction shouldve been roughly set by the time they started sponsoring Mclaren in 2012 spring.

So, basically they've been advertising sth they would let go very soon? Maybe they pushed Lucozade to raise level of awareness and value of the brand in order to find better buyers? if it makes financial sense.

Glaxo have other things to push like maximuscle or medicine or whatever, so they can still remain on board. I'd hope Santory will hop on too by continuing Lucozade or whatever form, but that would surely conflict with Diageo in Johnnie Walker, so either Diageo staying put and Lucozade(Santory) out or vice versa, I imagine. Not sure if it would be okay as long as it's soft drink incl Lucozade tho.
