Tracks have three timing sectors.
But who decided this should be the case? Why not four? Or two? Or nine?

And when?
The nearest I can tell is that it came into use in the mid 1990's. (Back when they appeared to be called "segments").

How did all this come about?

Three sectors has been the norm for a long time, longer than the mid- 90'.
I'm quite sure it's the teams decision, where the timing points shall be, but I cannot really remember that they've moved them(?)

If I'm not mistaken, teams actually have more sectors, like 9 or 12?

With their telemetry, they sort of have as many sectors as they like, don't they?

Its F1 specific, isn't it? Pretty sure WSBK and MotoGP use 4 sectors.

I just watched a bunch of qualifying videos from 1986 onward. Looks like the sector times were introduced in 1992 when Tag Heuer succeeded Longines as official timekeeper.

Here, for example, is Senna at Silverstone in 1991: http://youtu.be/rzlroZ4aOaw?t=9m54s

I'd like there to be more sectors and speed traps so we could gather more information fo our fun and diggesting.

Theres more than 3 timing sectors.
The F1 2013 live timing app updates the gap after each timing sector. Previous years, like most other places, it only updated after the 3 main designated sectors.

I think I saw RosbergĀ“s telemetry in Mel and there were like 20 or so sectors. I guess its a compromise of enough information and information that is still usable.
