I've just finished watching the race, and one thing I noticed the commentators failed to mention was Alonso continuing to race with a broken front wing. It was obvious, to me at least, that this was potentially a very nasty accident waiting to happen.

It is perfectly legitimate for a dangerously damaged car to carry on for the rest of the lap, off the racing line, in order to pit. However Ferrari's decision to allow Alonso to carry on in order for him to be able to change for slick tyres was, in my opinion, reprehensible. This clearly put the welfare of other drivers in danger.

Why did no action take place by the stewards?

You can't black flag someone who had already gone out of the race.

Perhaps they were expecting him to pit (the mechanics were ready) so they didn't have enough time to ready the flag when he continued on track? Usually it takes more than one lap for a damaged car to be flagged in this way in any case, if I remember correctly from past incidences.

He has just completed one lap. I have never heard of anyone who has been blackflagged after a couple of corners. On the other hand, at first the driver is warned, if he doesnt react and comes into the pit then he will be blackflagged. It is not a court where you can be given a life imprisonment, you take it too seriously.

Why couldn't you have asked this question in the existing thread talking about the incident? In fact if you had read it you would already have seen the answer.

They must not have expected him to stay out and then he crashed.

They had about 15 seconds to do so, probably less; add to that the FIA stewards being generally slow in doing anything.

But anyway, the black flag is inappropriate; the meatball flag would have been the most logical flag to wave - and should have been, as far as I'm concerned.

It's because it's the following flag that should have been presented:

Yeah, because we've never seen drivers drive around with bits falling off or on 3 wheels before now. People are so pampered these days, they now want a "meatball flag" arnt the restricted engines, crippled tyres and plastic overtaking measures enough for you and your ilk?
