What is FSAE?
The linked page says it's "Formula SAE" but doesn't enlarge on this. Now to me, "SAE" is the [US] "Society of Automotive Engineers" suggesting a motor racing series: "Formula Society of AutomotiveEngineers". But I know that august body is concerned with establishing and maintaining automobile manufacturing standards, not running a motor racing series for students. So, I repeat: What is FSAE?

I googled "SAE" but not "Formula SAE" so I missed that
So, the SAE is more progressive than I thought.

That said, I'm struggling a bit to see the relevance of much of the linked survey to an F SAE project.

The Technical Forum is probably the place for this request.
Thanks! We'll move our survey request there.
All - Formula SAE is a student-design competition for engineers, who are members of SAE International. Here is the overview of the competition from the SAE International website:
"The concept behind Formula SAE is that a fictional manufacturing company has contracted a design team to develop a small Formula-style race car. The prototype race car is to be evaluated for its potential as a production item. The target marketing group for the race car is the non-professional weekend autocross racer. Each student team designs, builds and tests a prototype based on a series of rules whose purpose is both to ensure onsite event operations and promote clever problem solving."
Our survey is meant to gain research for the sales component of the competition.

I've no doubt he'll see this and chime in in some way.

And FWIW... I'm a proud alumnus of Virginia Tech Formula SAE. Go Hokies!

I'm a huge fan of Formula SAE as an educational tool for young, aspiring engineers. It's a first class way for students to learn teamwork and the merging of theoretical and practical engineering in an exciting application. We at Penske hired graduates who happened to have participated in this competition when they were students, and they were superb recruits. One of them is now Castroneves' race engineer. The level of technology they apply, particularly in the US (where I suppose funding is easier to come by) is tremendous.
I second Nigel's comments. I worked Tech every year at the California event and the designs are very impressive. It reminds me of the great days of Formula Ford before it became a spec series and disappeared (at least in CA). Only there were 60 some constructors instead of a half dozen or so. Tube frames, carbon fiber monocoques, wings, no wings, turbos, no turbos,...
TNF'ers will love it. The competitions are all around the world now--UK, Germany, Italy, Japan...plus 2 or 3 in the US. You can find the locations and dates at http://students.sae..../formulaseries/ In the US at least, you can attend the event for free but they are always looking for volunteers, particularly those with a technical and/or a race car background--volunteer for Tech and get a close up view of the students' work.
And if you are looking to hire the best of the new crop of engineers, that's definitely where to go. We've hired many ex-FSAE engineers and they do very well in the real world having had that hands-on experience.

Schools which built cars and entered that had kids going straight from school to good jobs with the experience they had on their CVs.

A similar experience was seen in Australia with the Shell-sponsored Mileage Marathon...

Also an FSAE event in Australia....
