I just saw this on an Aussie Motorsport site. Very sad BUT what the hell does anyone need a gun at a motor race. And why does a lobby group spend money sponsoring a stockcar race ?
The rest of the civilised world really wonders about the American preoccupation with guns,, and the power of the NRA. Just another example of the lunacy I guess.

This is probably going to be removed at some point but I hope you get to read this before it does, as I feel this does have to do with racing and racing culture.

As an american it saddens me when the world sees this extreme as the reality of the whole population; a lobby that sits and sways people to vote for laws that make them more profits; and they don't actually represent the people that are actual owners.

But this happening at an NRA sponsored race is just the gravy on the cake for me. Ironically it's most likely not going to get any press or used in any debate because it's going to be squashed before it even gets that far.

I'm not going to go into my opinions and whathaveyou-s because that doesn't so much have to do with the racing series... but.... every culture has their pitfalls... (be it people stealing money from banks *cough*bernie*cough*), but it's just the things that get bad press that shows the whole population as a replicant of the media's not-so-correctly painted visions.

And as an american I think most people don't see owning a gun a choice... it's a necessity. It's basically shoved down their throats that they need one. Look, even NRA sponsored a race for Smoke's sake. It's everywhere you look.

I guess it depends on what the spirit is. It could be NASCAR just doesn't like it. Or it could be something like Gordon's infamous Jurassic Park car. Technically, it was within rules but it used up every bit of gray area. That could be what's going on here. Perhaps the Penske teams found a workaround in the rules in regards to the rearend while technically its ok, but its accomplishing something NASCAR really didn't want. It's immensely frustrating for sure but I can see both sides.

In the 1990s Bill Elliott and Harry Gant had 4-race winning streaks largely aided by 'gray area' suspension tricks IIRC that were outlawed in-season once found out. I don't think Elliott won again in his year until Kulwicki let him at the finale. Penske hasn't had much success fielding two consistent front runners so we'll see if they suffer similarly from here on out.

As an aside, the line about 'our team being the most legal/ethical in the garage' as related by BK is consistent with just about everyone who has been caught in the recent era. I remember the 48 team repeating in after Knaus was nabbed with one of his various tricks several years ago.

I think it depends where and how you grew up.
My grandpa owned a ranch and I was given my first rifle when I was 8. For a reason. To get rid of the varmints that cost him money. I was also taught how and when a firearm is to be used. I'm 57 now, don't live on a ranch, don't have any varmints that the dogs don't take care of, but I still have a safe full of rifles and pistols that I really do enjoy shooting. Shooting is a sport, and being accurate takes a lot of practice. Since I live in the middle of nowhere, I can go plinking pretty much anytime I want within a mile of where I live. It has recently become apparent that there are certain guns that the completely useless and out of touch politicians in DC have decided I shouldn't have so before they are outlawed I just purchased two more guns for my safe that I'm sure will soon be unavailable, a Glock .40 and an AR-15 variant. I guess I could say in a way they were shoved down my throat. Those are first new guns I have bought in over 20 years, and they are totally legal, registered and neutered California style. They are now the only modern, semi-automatic guns in my safe, I have always been partial to revolvers and lever actions. Do I need them? Not really, but they are TBH pretty nifty, nicely engineered and very smooth, particularly the Glock.
Not *ONE* law that DC is currently debating will do one iota about preventing gun crime, particularly of the sorts of spree killers that are the current cause of the new gun regulations under proposal.
Gun crime is done by criminals, or IMO most recently by borderline mentally ill individuals on medication. None of which should have been/be anywhere near a firearm of any sort.

I'm not being contentious, but none of the recent most newsworthy shootings would have been prevented by background checks, or waiting periods, bot of which I underwent to get my new firearms.
Even that nutcase in Norway that killed 77 people bought everything legally in Norway, in a much more stringent regime for firearms ownership, including having to belong to clubs in order to even qualify for ownership.
There are very few laws, except perhap outright confiscation of all guns, that will prevent lone wolf killers from their gruesome sprees.

A guy killing himself is just as ironic, but unfortunately much more tragic. Condolences to his family and witnesses. I hope he got the relief he was seeking.

Since both team cars were involved i would think Brian & Joey lose 25 points each but that the team gets hit with fines or over 100k per car with a lost of 50 points per car in the owners points.


At some point the drivers have to admit in public just how involved they are with the building of their cars..

While Stewart and some drivers are heavily involved in car prep , some drivers may be more like just get in and drive it school (ala Buddy Baker)

It's getting read bad when even the penalties are predictable.
