I went down the road this morning for a cup of coffee, & found all these Bristols....cars, I mean.

The Bristol Owners Club Australia is holding its National Rally here in South Australia at present,
& called through Strathalbyn for a few hours this morning Anzac Day.

I took a few pictures with my phone.

A bit of everything there...

402s, 403s, some later Chrysler-engined Bristols, a rare Brustang and a Lancia Bristol.

A famous racing identity you would know, Lynton, David Mawer once had a 403 like those red ones. I was lucky enough to take it for a drive one night, but it was later sacrificed to the alter of Ralts and helped Dave purchase and run the Formula Brabham/Holden car for a while.

I do like those convertibles!

And Strathalbyn is a nice spot, isn't it?

OT? I don't know... Strathalbyn is where Hoot Gibson started his racing career... in the late twenties...

Just reminded me of an NEC Classic Car show some years ago. At these events a fairly well endowed young lady wearing a press badge would come up to my model car stand and ask "Got any Lancias?" or "Got any Peugeots?", the manufacturer would vary she was presumably finding information for other people since she never bought anything. well you are all ahead of me but I could not keep a straight face when she asked in all, seeming, innocence "Got any Bristols?"

The AC looks OK to me.....more appropriate than the the car next to it.

I think that beautiful blue 402 is the one my dad and Wyndham Hewitt competed in the 1952 Aix en Provence rally and won their class, probably the only time Bristol's boulevard cruiser competed in anything.

It's not really my period, but what a handsome car that AC is, and I like the Lancia as well. On the Bristols, the early ones are more attractive to me than their later efforts, was all the styling done in-house?

Edit, believe it or not I mis-spelled the two letter word AC, must learn to type more slowly.

That would have required a bonnet-bulge of such a size that the driver would have had some difficulty peering around it.

None of those did!
Can't remember when the first Ace-Bristol appeared, but I think it was 1956 and the 2 litre saloon production ended in 1957, all having AC engines.

I agree, I would have thought it unlikely...

But it's also true that some ACs did use Bristol engines and that a transplant would not be unheard of.

It does seem that this gathering Lynton has encountered was for more than just Bristols. Or it attracted owners of other cars who wanted to see the Bristols?

Nail on the head.

Strath is at the end of several nice winding roads to the back of the hills which encourage bikes & cars for a drive.

We get upwards of 50 motorbikes here every Sunday morning as they stop for coffee half way through their trip to & from Adelaide.

I reckon those couple that didn't fit were associates of the rally in their own off-topic cars, just along for the drive.

Spotted one of the cars in the vicinity of Mount Compass late in the day and smelt a rat but alas, dusk was approaching and it was too late to explore...
