It's probation, it's almost meaningless.

Well it gives NASCAR an early-week headline...

David Caraviello ‏@dcaraviello
N'wide drivers Nelson Piquet Jr and Brian Scott placed on #NASCAR probation until June 26 for their involvement in the on-track altercation.
Crew chiefs Chris Carrier (Piquet) and Phil Gould (Scott) also on #NASCAR probation until June 26 as a result of the on-track incident.

I'm surprised. Not it's the on-track altercation that's the stated reason.

As Ross said, the penalty is almost meaningless. The drivers will definitely be on good behavior.

Makes you wonder if Petty would have gotten that 200th win at Daytona if they had used these green white checker rules back then

( BTW i detest these GWC ideas for the reason shown tonite, Montoya should have won it after all the work getting in position to do so .) To me wins this way seem tainted.

Paul

If you're going that route, I'll offer that Dale Snr doesn't win Daytona 98 either. It's all about the show, the view is the fans deserve the chance to see a "live" finish and that can also be tracked back to the decision to make the first 26 races of the calendar an elimination exercise and then bunch up the field for the final run to the checkers.

Some will approve, some won't. People will lose races they deserve to win, but overall a regular "also-ran" like JPM (harsh, but that is effectively what he is imo) gains more throughout a season but may/has lost his best chance of a win, it's inevitable that will cause more aggravation & displeasure for people who hope this is "the moment".

(Given Petty's engine for his 200th was even more dodgy than Kenseth's last weekend, some will argue he ought to be wedged firmly on 199 anyway, still Air Force One racing them down the backstretch drag strip was quite impressive!)

I gotta ask, What do you have against Matt Kenseth?

Heh -- nothing at all, I'm a fan. Just that he wasn't racing during my formative years, while the ones mentioned were.

Taking that into account then Petty would not have 199 victories either. Wasnt he fined on the 198 for switching tyres?

Ah so that also explains your beef with Travis Kvapil.

The Petty controversy was #198 at Charlotte in 1983. They decided to really live it up with the big engine and switching the tires. It's been speculated that the tires were done to distract attention from the motor, though I'm not sure how that would work. There was a lot of talk about big engines around that time - it was noted that the runner-up Waltrip's car was hastily loaded up and on the road afterward. I wouldn't be shocked if something was up, gray area or otherwise, for the 200th at Daytona, the way he was able to repass Yarborough who was the speedway and last-lap master at that time.

GWCs are where I especially am not in favor of the double file restarts. At least make someone earn a win with a legitimate pass, rather than just a drag race restart game or by the variable of the grooves.

Not to mention not mentioning Teddy Musgrave, Rich Bickle (who's back doing some ARCA super-late-models this year), Scott Wimmer ... :)

Well, King Richard passing Cale in Win No. 200 was more do-able in those pre-restrictor plate days, where you actually could draft past a lead car without help from behind. That said, there have been rumors that the Petty team might have had, um, a special favor from tech inspectors that day, as the publicity for NASCAR from Petty getting No. 200 on July 4, in front of the then-current President of the US, was significant, even in mainstream media. Of course, it's never gone beyond the rumor stage, and it's worth noting that the No. 43 usually was awfully strong at Daytona and Talladega, too.

Excellent point , those double file restarts really hurt the guys stuck in the wrong lane.

Gee, thanks. At least you didn't ask what I have against Nelson Jr.
