An event not to be missed - Hope to meet John again, was invited along to watch testing of the new Surtees T7 F1 car at Brands Hatch in 1970.

Motor sport legend, John Surtees OBE, the only person to have won world championships on both two and four wheels, will be supporting the Edenbridge Fun Day in Kent on Monday May 27...

The special event in Surtees' home town will feature static displays and a parade of rarely seen race cars and bikes as well as veteran and classic vehicles along Edenbridge High Street. The Edenbridge Fun Day will raise awareness and funds for the Henry Surtees Foundation which was established by John Surtees following the tragic death of his son Henry while competing in Formula 2 race in 2009 aged just 18. The Henry Surtees Foundation aims to give young people from the community at large opportunities to experience the emotion, disciplines and learning that the world of motor sport offers.

The Team Surtees and John Surtees related vehicles taking part in the Edenbridge Fun Day and parade will include:
• A TS7 Formula 1 car which John Surtees raced at the British Grand Prix in Brands Hatch in 1970. John Surtees will drive it.
• The TS14 Formula 1 car which Mike Hailwood drove to second place in the 1972 Italian Grand Prix. It will be driven by McLaren Formula 1 team reserve driver Oliver Turvey.
• The TS15 2-litre Formula 2 car which won the prestigious Interlagos race in Brazil in 1973. Past Formula 3 British Champion and A1 Grand Prix runner-up Robbie Kerr will drive it.
• A 1960 MV Agusta four-cylinder GP motorcycle – John Surtees won seven motorcycle championships riding for MV Augusta.
• A 1954 BMW Rennsport twin-cylinder motorcycle – John Surtees raced for the factory team at the Nurburgring in 1955. Engineers associated with John Surtees’ career on two wheels will ride the motorcycles.

The vehicles will be displayed throughout the day outside the Bradford shop, Station Road, where they were built and designed by predominantly local residents.

Shome mistake shirley. Hailwood drove TS9B chassis 005 to second place in this race. There was a TS14 at Monza, but I understand it was not used in any official practice session.

IIRC John Surtees drove the TS14 in the 1972 Italian GP Q19th but did not finish, his last Championship Grand Prix appearance

Isn't the 27th a bank holiday? Or do you work them?

John was on good form for the Edenbridge Fun Day,

Posted Image

where he caught up with several former employees including Peter Connew,

Posted Image

and Bob Eggington known on TNF as RJE.

Posted Image

SOT Bob was responsible for a replica Chaparral Barry and I saw at Crystal Palace yesterday.

Posted Image

Peter checks the authenticity of the DFV number, 050, while Bob admires the workmanship on the front suspension.

Posted Image

A piece of rubber in the starter motor of the TS7 disintegrated just before off so John needed a push start to get going, soon after the TS14 which was due to be driven by Oliver Turvey developed a fuel filter seal leak so it DNS.

Posted Image

John gave the TS7 a bit of welly as he headed off down the B2026 towards Edenbridge.

Posted Image

Noisiest machine of the day was John's 1960 MV Augusta.

Posted Image

John and noisy MV return to the site of the former Surtees factory after the demo.

John in conversation with the driver of the F2 TS15 does anyone recognise who that might have been ?

Relevant answers may be credited and used in a forthcoming blog.

Thanking you in anticipation of your responses.

The blurb for the event (posted by Richie in the opening post) says Robbie Kerr, and it certainly looks like him:

This is perhaps the last year a such event could be held as there are plans to demolish the old factory and
use the space as a petrol station and parking lot for a new Sainsbury´s store.

I presented John with a 1967 edition of Autosport showing him winning the Italian Grand Prix and an advert from his racing shoes from the same period and was pleased to accept them.

A friend of mine claims to have designed the arrow logo of Team Surtees back in the 60's but John thought it was an idea of more than one person.

Hi RJE!

Any stories or perhaps even photos you would like to share with us?

I´m very interested in the Formula 1 scene of the 70´s.

There was a Youles that raced a Porsche in British GT (Brian Youles rings a bell), and Alan Yule was a very quick driver in FF1600, especially at Brands Hatch. Really nice guy as well......

Mike Youles. Raced in Group C2 categories and then British GT. Not a bad peddler.
