I've been in the charity shops of Carlisle lately and found some good F1 goodies - Nigel Mansell's autobiography in hardback, a review of the 1998 season and a whole host of technical books.

Has anyone ever found any real F1 gems in charity shops?

Those finds are depressing. Who would give away the technical books? Maybe it was some die-hard fan who at home watching a race as usual when he became gradually aware he wasn't quite enjoying it as he should. Then he had some terrible crushing revelation and, jumping up from his chair, he cried out to the universe how how Formula 1 was meaningless bullshit and tyre management my arse, before sweeping all his F1 books from the shelves and driving off at high speed to his local charity shop. :(

More on topic, no I have not found any gems. I often see copies of DC's autobiography but I already own that anyway.

I think many books end up in charity shops through the loss of loved ones.

Yeah, that was my bleaker thought so I went with the more colourful option. At least this way they get to be read by someone who appreciates them. Because I can't seriously actually imagine someone being so into F1 they start buying the tech manuals etc to then get so disenchanted they just give 'em away.

Recently picked up Mansell's autobiography for £1. Have also found Autosport's reviews of the 1989 and 1994 F1 seasons, and Jim Clark's Autobiography ("Jim Clark at the Wheel"). Most of the stuff in these bookshops seems to be either Mansell's autobiography, Hamilton's autobiography (or one of the myriad biographies of him that popped up in 2007), Tom Rubython's biography of Senna, or old ITV season previews, but there is the occasional gem.

I used to keep an eye out for the odd vhs season review. Most shops don't keep tapes now though.

The best, in terms of bargain, was probably this, which I picked up for 50p.

I did pick up Maurice Hamilton's biography of Ken Tyrrell for £1, went home and checked on Amazon where the cheapest copy was selling for around £20,000. Unfortunately it was just alogorithms out of control.
