So you think he'd be inconspicuous in Spain for example?

I think so.

I am getting the impression that if there had been bulletin boards back in the '60s, there would have been people posting things like 'Why oh why does this Muhammad Ali not just let his fighting do all the talking? And what is all this nonsense about floating butterflies?'

And Senna would be derided for talking about his faith in God. 'Just driver faster man!!!'

The world has moved on since then and so should this discussion, please.

Discuss what he said not whether he should have said it.

That's the point!

No actually that is not the point at all. As I said earlier, almost all of the drivers care what others think, the only difference is that they pretend they don't care. So the point is, if caring what others think is a sign of weakness, then almost all drivers share this weakness. Regardless of whether they realise it's perceived as a sign of weakness and hide it - like most do, or don't realise and hence don't hide it - like Lewis. :)

Just seems to me Lewis is trying very hard to persuade people about how this move to Mercedes was a good one.....it seems very deliberate to get across the notion that he hasn't made a mistake..... convince themselves they've made the right choice

So far in 2013:

Lewis WDC position 3rd, points 50, finishes 5th in first race and 3 podiums
Jenson WDC position 10th, points 13, finishes 9th, 17th, 5th, 10th

Yep I can see why he's clutching at straws and finding any excuse he can to persuade people that he made the right decision

Or maybe he's just sharing some of what he felt whilst at McLaren. I don't see it as him trying to demonise them at all. He's said many times he still sees it as home, even that he's open to going back someday if they'll take him, that he's got a lot of love for people there and the team. It seems like many here were willing to open their legs for the positive things he had to say about the team but anything that can be perceived as negative must simply be an excuse. I mean it can't be his genuine feeling. Can it?

It seems evident to me that Lewis felt suffocated and unable to be himself at mclaren and currently feels a sense of relief. His comments in his bbc column regarding his involvement with hip hop culture were particularly interesting, who would have thought the sponsors dream/media trained pr product of 2007 was into that sort of thing?

I think a lot of Lewis's issues with the team, media, public perception and driving itself (2011) have stemmed from the distance between how he was presented and 'forced' to behave at the start of his career and his true character. Over time he wanted to show/be himself more and more and the tension between himself and ron/dad grew more and more

His comments this season have been a reflection of how he feels - relief, freedom etc - confused with his feelings of having left home and missng it to a certain extent.

I don't think he's purposefully dissing mclaren, rather just trying to articulate his feelings in his usual frank but verbose and often contradictory way.

I also don't think he's desperate to justify his move but rather it's the above mixed with a powerful urge to shove humble pie in the faces of those who said it was a terrible decision given macca and merc's contrasting fortunes so far this year.

He's totally kidding himself when he talks anout growing a thicker skin and caring less about what people think though imo.

Lastly the issue 3 years ago - can only assume it's someone getting in his ear about nicole and celebrity lifestyle, presumably Ron.

Very well put Rob! I'm not convinced though that person 3 yrs ago is Ron, though you may well be correct, I don't know. In the interview Lewis mentioned something about that person wasn't trying to help him. "It felt like an attempt to put me in that position and it caused a lot of problems." "That person wasn't aiming to help me."

I think it's obvious that McLaren take the whole thing to another level, they even have a "human performance engineering" department or something to that effect. Sounds like there was someone else in there, maybe someone we don't even know or heard about even. Somebody with good intent in thinking they were going to get the best out of Lewis for McLaren's sake but ended up having a negative effect on him.

He says it was someone in his personal life:

"There was particularly an experience where in my personal life I was having someone saying things to me which was really affecting me. That was three years ago. It was just a ton of things. A ton of things going on. It felt like an attempt to put me in that position."

That doesn't seem to fit for Ron at all. If he hadn't specifically added to the Daily Mirror that he wasn't talking about his dad, I might have thought that was who he meant. However, it's entirely possible it's a friend or family member who isn't in the public eye at all.

Reading things like 'there is no time for mistakes. All is on me' I get the impression that he watches too many movies

^ coming from an Alonso fan is laughable. Some of Alonso's quotes:

"If the enemy thinks in the mountains, attack by sea. If they think in the sea, attack by the mountains."

“If the sword breaks, attack with the hands. If they cut off your hands, push the enemy with your shoulders, even with the teeth.”

“Only a warrior can handle the road to become unbeatable. His life is a challenge, and challenges are not good or bad, they are simply challenges.”

“There are no victories in the war without a scar, no rainbow without the rain”

 Yeah it does sound quite hilarious the way he said it. And though I know he's an Eintracht Frankfurt fan, I have always thought that the quote shows he's a secret Bayern Munich supporter as well. Too bad he wants BVB to win instead. :p

Maybe we should do a list of quotes from various drivers that should be on T-shirts. After all, Kimi already has his own.

I read it as that person was affecting his personal life not necessarily in his personal life (if that makes any kind of sense!) I.e. Ron or someone advising him against his relationship with Nicole.

Could be anyone,even Nicole.

But still his problem,he has to focus on his job like everybody... i don't know one person without some familiar or personal problem going on and you still have to show results.

Absolutely. He owns a dog- a dog!! He should get a tiger or something. And he hoons around race tracks every fortnight or so with complete disregard for the environment and traffic calming policy. And he upsets sensitive fanboys by writing articles which they don't but do but don't read. Waaay out of control.

That could be what he intended to convey even though it is not exactly what he said. On the other hand, it could be that he did not wish to be particularly clear.

IF you can't differentiate Alonso from a 17th century Japanese writer I don't think there's any point in discussing :D
