sounded like the roof blew off when they threw that last yellow out

That was just me cheering that Dario had messed up.

The crowd was on its feet every time TK took the lead.

The race went by too fast. Also they need to rethink the security. A bunch of people didn't get in due to the heightened measures. Also a noon start time is silly. Nothing else is on that day except the NASCAR race. Start it at 1pm! It did allow people to go to the pacers game though.

So that's basically 500 front wing, normal rear bumpers. Normal rear wing main plane. Missing top element. Endplates shaved down to match.

Okay, thanks, my recollection of the details wasn't that good. What are they going to be using this year? Same setup, trimmed out further, or the full Indy/Pocono/Fontana kit?

I have mixed feeling about this. Normally I no longer want to invest to many hours to watch a race. However I find Indy to short lately. It seems to have lost that high speed/endurance race feel to it. It seemed more of a survivor race before but you still had to post quick lap times.

It seemed like there was less yellow. Briscoe made a comment that the green flag runs were so long no one was able to try alternate strategy so there wasn't much field movement.

Fyp.

In any oval race, you need 6 cautions. Spread out roughly equally throughout the race.

[Speculation]
If BK shows up next year you can bet they will start sooner. They were already willing to do so this year with the Vote for Smoke stunt.

I'm not sure why they have to have monaco, indy, and a 6hr charlotte on the same day. I get the ratings stuff and all that but, idk how you can watch 3 races like that pretty much back to back

I essentially did. I had to listen to Monaco because I was tailgating for the Indy 500. But if I was at home I could have easily watched all three and the pacers game.

The Monaco clash is something that Bernie set up to block any possibility of a F1 star sneaking out to the speedway. There have been clashes in the past, but not frequent as it is now. Again, this allows Bernie to have his free ad during Nascar on Fox.

Indy has always been around memorial day and the 600 falls in the above category.

Traditional start time for the 500 is 11am. They only changed it recently and for TV. Then someone pointed out to them that having it that late (1pm) was a bonehead maneuver. Any delay and it will get too dark to finish and they found out a few years back what the weather in Indiana can do in the late afternoon.

Go to about 2:30 and imagine 300,000 people at IMS.

11am start time.

Indy was always on Memorial Day until moved to the Sunday of the 3-day holiday weekend, which moved it opposite the traditional date for the 600.

Fixed that for ya

Bernie won't be getting any free ads on FOX now ;)

Isn't Monaco always on the weekend of some Saint's Day or Holy Day or something which tends to fall on the last weekend of May?

For quite some time it used to be in the weekend of Ascension Day, which is always on a Thursday and could be somewhere between early and late May (40 days after Easter).

Not anymore.

Ratings are rubbish anyways. They don't really mean anything. They're exaggerated samples of the population not actual numbers of everyone.

Any reason why the measured sample of people watching Indy 500 would not be representative? Any reason why it would be less representative that the past ratings based on samples?

That's the attraction of it, IMO. It's The Sunday for racing.

Well because its not exactly an accurate #, just a sample.

Ya no, I agree. Just the way the laymen see it, they have monaco, indy and nascar on all on the same day... I know people that thought the 500 started at 6pm just because of the lack of advertising/cluster****.

Yeah but Neilsen is going to be inaccurate across the board. So the fudge factor for 2013 Indy vs 2012, 2011, etc should be the same. Likewise compared to other sports.

To dismiss an estimate because it is based on a sample is not a valid argument. It's a statistically illiterate argument. Unbiased samples of sufficient size will give very good estimates of the true number.

I'm not saying that that ratings are necessarily accurate, I'm just saying that dismissing a sample merely because it's a sample is a bad argument. There are a lot of people who are claiming that the way Nielsen samples audiences is flawed, and that results in either imprecise or biased estimates. That may be a valid argument, if the claims about the sampling are true.

That said, no sample is perfect, and there is always something to attack if you don't like what the sample is telling you. Any election poll that shows one politician leading another is flawed, if the trailing politician is to be believed. Sometimes they are, as Thomas Dewey would've argued, but most are not flawed enough to matter.

Well since Nascar is running some races on Sat now ,and tradition doesnt seem to matter as much there , why not move the 600 to saturday .thereby allowing an ez way for folks who want to try the double.

I don't think NASCAR wants to give up a race on Memorial Sunday, one of the most sacred days of the year in the USA. Moving to Saturday would mean accepting playing second fiddle to Indy & Indycar and do you see the current NASCAR ever doing something like that?
Hell will freez over first.

I think if you moved stuff, you still wouldn't have the double. Maybe maybe maybe Stewart might try, but you'd get the whole "I need to focus on my NASCAR program".

I have a hard time believing that Tony Stewart doesn't feel he has unfinished business at IMS. Indiana native and all that. (Athens of the Prairie!)

I think you've been able to do the double recently and no one has attempted it. It's a tight schedule, but it's feasible. And yet...

Yeah, BK was at IMS for the race and flew down to Charlotte later. I'm sure it's doable, but you wouldn't get practice and stuff in... I think they're changing the all-star race next year or something.

I'm guessing the Frances do not like NASCARists from thinking there is something outside the Winston Nextel that is worth racing for. Especially if said NASCARists come 27th at Indy and then win at Charlotte.

Why is the "double" such a big deal? If you win Indy, the last thing you're gonna want to do is rush off and race again. Even if you did, the chance of winning the 600 is pretty slim making the "Champ to Chump" scenario highly likely.

For Nascar it would be a win-win though.

Gah!

At first I was like, why didn't he do a Kimi and just go? Then I realized he wasn't full yet.

Good job by everyone.
