So putting very little effort into researching :) - given the life of the tyres at Barcelona, Im thinking that you wouldnt actually get a single flying lap under current F1 regs?

Opening stints were around 8-10 laps when full of fuel. At 4.6km/lap thats 37-46km life in the tyres. With the ring being 22km you'd be going outlap to inlap.
Thats pretty depressing to think of the tyres in those terms.

I don't think they did in and out laps on the full 'Ring. I think they'd take the shortcut behind the pits (or last corner on the new track) to avoid doing the entire thing.

It is not rocket science: He had to lift early in order to overtake the other cars close to the finish line, not kilometres before. It is a promotional run, foto finish is the keyword here, not pulverizing Bellof's record.

But imagine how every motorsport neard would go nuts if he had just went for it. :smoking: Schumi crushing the lap record in a modern F1 car...

Couldn't they just use whatever tires they use in historic F1 racing (like Boss GP or whatever) if the Pirelli show tires are complete crap?

I certainly wasn't Schummi's greatest fan and its rather sad and depressing that an all out/win at all costs, racer like MS has chosen to do this publicity stunt.

I'd rather remember the Red Baron properly - even when he was at his worst and dirtiest, he drove better and more excitingly than that.

Tyres were crap though - presumably more Pirelli nonsense. Thank you Pirelli - you have just given me another reason to never buy any of your ghastly product.

Hilarious really to see the comments here as if there was something to 'judge'. EVERY driver does publicity/filming events and runs.

Whoever your favourite driver is, guess what? They would do this exactly the same if asked/paid to do it.

But was he competitive time wise with Sabine? In her Transit Van! Or Clarksons diesel Jag. I somewhat doubt it. Though early when he was having half a go the car looked VERY unstable. Which is probably why he wisely backed off.

You can't be serious. So if Quentin Tarantino or Johnny Depp promote their movies, all smiling to the press, you find this sad and depressing too, because they don't show up with a pump gun and they don't appear as cool as on the screen? Houston, we need a reality check. All they do is their job.

I am very happy that Stefan Bellof still keeps the Ring lap record because I cannot think of any sportscar racer more deserving it.

In that video you can see why he didn't push. See the vibrations(bumpy). This track is nowhere close to new modern tracks. I mean quality of the surface, flatness of the surface. The car for sure was raised with maybe 1-2-3 cm from racing position. Also demo tyres. That was just demo/promo run with no intentions for record breaking.

At a speed any random competition driver could do half asleep. Not so nice. More like the complete waste of a great name, I'd say.

I remember seeing some footage from Fangio and Brabham doing a demo run in the 70's (I think) in their old cars and that was much more fun and effort than this.

This you may be referring to:

Not Nordschleife though.

He starts off at a reasonable pace through the early bits of the lap but once he gets up towards Aremberg you can see him taking it a lot easier.

My guess is he got there the "phone call" from the box to keep in mind the photofinish.

Just as an aside, where is the most time to be found/lost on the Nordschleife?

From GP Legends I seem to recall that Bergwerk was an extremely important corner as it led into a flat-out stretch for a good mile and a half, and that the Hohe-Acht-Eschbach-Planzgarten area seemed to be the most vital bits. They were also the hardest bits to memorise.

There were, however, other bits where there didn't appear to be any gains to be made at all.

According to Jackie Stewart, definitely by crossing the line in one bit.

Heidfeld wasn't flat out either, but at least he put some effort into his run few years back. I hope some day someone will attack the Bellof record.

Cool vid, I wasn't expecting him to go out and hot lap it or anything but either way that track looks way too bumpy to push in the first place.
