As I said elsewhere, going against the team's instructions to set fastest lap is either heroic or childish depending on your point of view. But even if you think it's heroic, it's surely much less heroic than, say, going against team instructions to catch Rosberg and put a move on him? If you're going to take a risk, why not take a risk that also has a meaningful reward on its flipside?

That might not be correct; he told us that he was closing on Hamilton only to realize that they immediately and simply sped up to keep the gap. Mercedes choose a such (slow) strategy on purpose, and we know in hindsight what it was. Vettel realized that immediately too, but speed differential between their cars wasn't enough to overtake fast Mercedes, and without artificial help he was content with safe P2. Webber knew too what the score was, which is why front was so static.A silver bus that Vettel not only made no attempt to overtake, but no attempt to even get close enough to be able to sneak by in the event of a Rosberg mistake. It's like he was sulking, leaving a sarcastically large gap between himself and Rosberg. Then moaning about how much quicker he could have gone - if you can go quicker, why not close up and put some pressure on the leader?
