Let's hope the cars stay in racing and don't end up over-restored at Pebble Beach etcIrvine Laidlaw, who has taken the difficult decision to give up racing, said: “I don’t regard myself as a collector. I am a car enthusiast and as an enthusiast I want to exercise my cars regularly, rather than gloat over them in the garage. So I have decided to sell the remaining competition cars and have consigned them to RM.”

Why did he make the decision to give up racing?
That is my favourite D Type.

Ummm... I'm not sure that he is still a Lord. If I still have Wilson's e-mail address I'll ask the questions and report back (on his brother's current situation).Indeed, it is the same Lord Irvine Laidlaw, Ralph. he is quoted as saying "I am a car enthusiast and as an enthusiast I want to exercise my cars regularly, rather than gloat over them in the garage".It seems that he is only selling his racing cars which would seem logical according to Rudolf's comment about a difficulty in obtaining a racing licence. Some of the appealing things about owning a GTO would seem to be its capacity to be used as a road car and its eligibility for just about every motoring event - competitive and non-competitive - on the planet.

If we are talking about the same Laidlaw his Ferrari 250GTO is conspicuous by it's absence from the list of items for sale.

He might have thought about it, but the 312 Boxer remained in original colours!I suppose the next owners will decide the colour schemes as I could never understand the fuss about the way I L presented his cars.He owned and paid for them so now't to do with anyone else.

All life peers take the title of Baron or Baroness when ennobled. Thus the very wonderful Mandy, Prince of Darkness rejoices in the official title of The Right Honourable the Baron Mandelson of Foy in the County of Herefordshire and of Hartlepool in the County of Durham.Seems to be a Baron in most places I have looked on the intelnet, not sure when I last heard of any body referred to as Baron though.

Didn't the government give him a job that entailed buying some expensive curtains & wallpaper? Or do I have the wrong blokeAs I understand it Irvine Laidlaw was made a life peer in 2004 after he undertook to cease being a tax exile and start paying UK tax.

Mike, I suspect you're thinking of Tony Blair's crony Lord 'Derry' Irvine who, whilst Lord Chancellor, had his official apartments refurbished at a cost to the taxpayer of around £600,000:Didn't the government give him a job that entailed buying some expensive curtains & wallpaper? I think even I could have made 3% on £770m with my appalling lack of knowledge of the world of high finance.

Don't know about the 312P, but he sold the 6CM quite some years ago, VinceDoes he still have a Ferrari 312P and a Maserati 6CM?

This thread did set out as a discussion on the sale of his collection. Not quite sure how it has become a discussion on his peerage. He's a really good bloke so I can't see what all the fuss is about.

Pity some other 70 Plus racers didn't see the light and hang up their helmet
