Just spotted this on the Classic & Sportscar site. The racing car collection - presumably all of them - is up for sale at RM in London on 7th to 9th September.

Irvine Laidlaw, who has taken the difficult decision to give up racing, said: “I don’t regard myself as a collector. I am a car enthusiast and as an enthusiast I want to exercise my cars regularly, rather than gloat over them in the garage. So I have decided to sell the remaining competition cars and have consigned them to RM.”

Let's hope the cars stay in racing and don't end up over-restored at Pebble Beach etc

I do hope that some of them at least will now be restored to genuine period livery.

Why did he make the decision to give up racing?

He offered me an F2 Lotus a while ago and I asked him why he was a seller.
His answer was that at his age he was struggling to get his license renewed.

He was very open about that otherwise I would not publish this information in an open forum.

If we are talking about the same Laidlaw his Ferrari 250GTO is conspicuous by it's absence from the list of items for sale.

Indeed, it is the same Lord Irvine Laidlaw, Ralph. he is quoted as saying "I am a car enthusiast and as an enthusiast I want to exercise my cars regularly, rather than gloat over them in the garage".It seems that he is only selling his racing cars which would seem logical according to Rudolf's comment about a difficulty in obtaining a racing licence. Some of the appealing things about owning a GTO would seem to be its capacity to be used as a road car and its eligibility for just about every motoring event - competitive and non-competitive - on the planet.

Ummm... I'm not sure that he is still a Lord. If I still have Wilson's e-mail address I'll ask the questions and report back (on his brother's current situation).

He remains a Lord and is only flogging his race cars.
The G T O is usedfor rallies.
I suppose the next owners will decide the colour schemes as I could never understand the fuss about the way I L presented his cars.He owned and paid for them so now't to do with anyone else.

I understand that he is only selling the racing cars and is keeping the extensive (& expensive) collection of 'sports & touring' cars which presumably includes the Aston DB4 Zagato as well as the GTO.

Seems to be a Baron in most places I have looked on the intelnet, not sure when I last heard of any body referred to as Baron though.

He might have thought about it, but the 312 Boxer remained in original colours!

All life peers take the title of Baron or Baroness when ennobled. Thus the very wonderful Mandy, Prince of Darkness rejoices in the official title of The Right Honourable the Baron Mandelson of Foy in the County of Herefordshire and of Hartlepool in the County of Durham. :stoned:

As I understand it Irvine Laidlaw was made a life peer in 2004 after he undertook to cease being a tax exile and start paying UK tax. This he has so far failed to do, but there are no grounds by which his peerage can be removed. The only sanction possible was taken, which was to remove his right to sit in the House of Lords.

Didn't the government give him a job that entailed buying some expensive curtains & wallpaper? Or do I have the wrong bloke

Languishing 2 places above Bernie's ex. at #114 in the most recent "Sunday Times Rich List", his Lordship managed to increase his personal fortune by £25m to £770m in the last 12 months, simply by doing nothing. I heard that Laidlaw was planning on racing again this season, but seemingly his medical treatment has got in the way.

Mike, I suspect you're thinking of Tony Blair's crony Lord 'Derry' Irvine who, whilst Lord Chancellor, had his official apartments refurbished at a cost to the taxpayer of around £600,000:

I think even I could have made 3% on £770m with my appalling lack of knowledge of the world of high finance.

"Recovering asset prices" have increased his wealth this last year, according to The Sunday Times.

Don't know about the 312P, but he sold the 6CM quite some years ago, Vince

The 6CM and 512 went years ago.

Its only the racing only cars

He's a really good bloke so I can't see what all the fuss is about.

He's certainly done many good things and these outweigh the iffy stuff.

This thread did set out as a discussion on the sale of his collection. Not quite sure how it has become a discussion on his peerage.

Pity some other 70 Plus racers didn't see the light and hang up their helmet

In the circumstances I could make a witty response to that, but I've already been chastised by the moderator once today so I shall refrain..... .......... :)
