jeez. seems some basic safety procedure not followed. difficult situation tho of course. Only thing that can be done is an important lesson to be learned and shared widely.

Always remember that those track marshalls are risking their lives and doing amazing jobs.

I do not recommend searching for this (and there is no way in hell I am posting it) but there is a graphic picture of the accident floating around and I find it amazing this happened, with other marshalls around and everything

Rest in peace, if reports that he didn't survive are accurate

A marshall was seriously injured (now died) when they were moving the Sauber and he dropped his radio, went to pick it up and was run over by the tractor/crane moving the car. :(

just shock. How terrible. (yet another) sad day for F1 and motorsport.

Respect for marshalls risking their lives, and medicals and all who're involved, so proud of them.
but this is just horrible.
it's dangerous, we know it, we dont need any sort of reminder for that, and guys at the scene should know it well and accept it alot better than us in front of tv screen, but it had to happen again in this way. what can I say.

The official FIA statement reads:

The FIA statement in full:
The FIA is sad to announce the death of a Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada circuit worker, at 6:02 pm.

The worker, a member of the Automobile Club de l’Ile Notre Dame, was the victim of an unfortunate accident that occurred at the end of this afternoon’s Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada. The worker was helping to recover a car which had stopped during the race. The recovery vehicle had lifted the car to return it to the pits and while doing this the worker dropped his radio and attempted to pick it up. As he did this, he stumbled and was hit and run over by the recovery vehicle.

The worker was transported via helicopter to Sacre-Coeur Hospital where he was treated by the traumatology department of Dr Ronald Denis, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and Dr Jacques Bouchard, Chief Medical Officer of the Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the worker succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The FIA, l’Automobile Club de l’Ile Notre-Dame and the Formula 1 Grand Prix du Canada want to communicate their deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim. The identity of the worker cannot be revealed at this time.

Tragic. R.I.P

Strange, I did not see any medical car or even yellow at the end of the race? I was thinking, when I saw the crane go out, that it would have been a SC had there been more laps left. Guess they did not want to end race during yellow. In a way it makes it even more tragic because then it is not only an accident.

There will be consequenses.

it's not freak accident at all.

cranes and those heavy machinery are as much threat as racing cars and bikes in speed and flying tyres and debris are. Anyone who've actually touched or stood close those heavy machinery should know it very well. At factories, construction sites, mining sites etc where such machinery is used, many many deaths and injuries all around the world. Such tough job. Our lives are supported only by such nameless people at thankless labor.

Martin Brudle commented on this 4 laps from the finish, saying that the mobile crane was more of a danger than the stricken Sauber based on his own F1 experience of nearly hitting a recovery Marshall during a race.
Prophetic words indeed
