Inspired by the discussion on the MP4-28 thread I thought it'd be interesting to discuss Paddy Lowes' influence on previous McLarens. Like most fans I have a rough memory of the type and performance of the different models but I don't know too much about who was mainly responsible for them (although I'm sure there are many on here who can). From what I can see the cars that he seems to have a major influence over consist of:

MP4-23
MP4-24
MP4-25
MP4-26
MP4-27
MP4-28

And running on from this I'm curious to know what the 'matrix' management structure has been like given F12GT's post:

Since whenever I make these sort of comments I get challenged on them, I'll say up front that I used to work at McLaren Racing. You can choose to believe me or not....

It's going to be a fascinating time, people are spot on that a steady stream of excellent engineers have left McLaren over the past 5 years. BUT.... this was due in large part to Paddy's management style (read "lack of") and the small vociferous inner clique he drew around him. He's a fantastically talented technical engineer, albeit with a massive blind-spot for aerodynamics - McLaren will miss his intellect, however he's driven out more talent than he himself brings. It'll be fascinating to see what emerges from the ruins of this season - his weakened inner clique or a more cohesive unit. I suspect it will define McLaren's fortunes for a few years to come.

I thought the whole point of the matrix management structure was that cliques didn't form and that the knowledge and responsibility were shared around. I really don't want this thread to turn into a Whitmarsh bashing thread, but could this be a case of him trying to keep Paddy happy to keep hold of him and consequently 'skewing' the matrix?
