Wasn't there plans for a race in Italy this year? Maybe that explains 34 days of nothing between Baltimore and Houston.

I don't even think there was any discussions among the two sides (Mugello was the circuit named), so maybe that is the reason, but still. Heck, I still think the series ends a month too early. F1 has another 3-4 races after IndyCar is over, and NASCAR is only halfway through their chase at this point. One of those small things that still leave IndyCar needing way too much T.P.

Indy Lights entry list is also out. While they have 8 car entered, they claim 9. No new changes for the field since Team Moore decided not to run a 2nd entry (they race 4 drivers in the 1st 4 races in that second entry). I was expecting Munoz to walk away with the title, but Karam is picking it up, but outside that I do not see anything from the rest of the grid. Like Gabby Chaves, but the Schmidt team seems to already have all their efforts on the Karam car. Hawksworth (any British fans tell us if he was rated at all while back home?) is off the pace after taking the win pretty easily in St. Petersburg after Munoz retired. Rest of the grid is a mix of young and under-experienced (Veach) and guys who have 3+ years in this car and don't have either the funding or talent to really contend for consistent wins let alone a title, much less moving on to IndyCar.

I still wonder though...how many others here aside from you, Lemnpiper and I have even attended short track races?

I've been to more than a few over the years.

I've been to about 50 short track races between sprint cars, midgets, dirt modifieds and CASCAR combined. Sadly this was all between 1997-2000ish. If there isn't mud in your hair, you aren't sitting close enough.

Jim , actually i believe lots of folks here do attend short track races , but since the "main" series discussed here rarely race on those circuits , they often get overlooked in the discussions.

Has there ever been a thread of shortest short tracks anyone has ever seen folks race on? ( I dont mean slot cars type tracks).

I once saw a series of motorcycle flat track races held indoors in a barn in Milford Va in the dead of winter. End to end that barn couldnt have been 75 feet . ( small fields per heat of 3 to 5 bikes)

How many times did the announcer say "We've got a barn burner tonight!" before someone threw something at him?

Ed Carpenter
Excellent on left turns, somewhat less so on right ones. Guaranteed his oval career by being rather great on them, and guaranteed his road course career by marrying the boss's daughter.

Hey, let's get our nepotism straight, now: he's the (old) boss's stepson. (I admit, I did some googling to make absolutely certain Ed didn't marry Fuzzy Zoeller's daughter...he didn't).

Well, we're at 5...that's not exactly a stunning total for the number of regular posters here :) (I should have also known to add BSquared)

Smallest track? I attended a midget race at Trojan Speedway, a track billed as a 1/5 mile dirt, but it was actually a 1/8 mile "widened" to be sort of a 1/5. It sat between the Long Beach Freeway and the back of a department store. There was a yellow flag to shoo kids off the signboards behind the track :D

I had opportunities to see indoor races, but...passed on them.

Not sure about Tony Stewart Eldora, but I went in 2000, and while not rocks, the clay would come apart in chunks and I was glad I had goggles on (I was 10 and we though there'd be dust due of other dirt track experiences), as every handful of laps I had so much clay on them that I'd need to clean them.

But back to Iowa Speedway and IndyCar.

1st Practice consisted of the usually front runners.

Top 3:
Kanaan
Power
Andretti

Other Noteables:
Bourdais (11th)
Hunter-Reay (13th)
Franchitti (16th)
Rahal (just move to NASCAR or SportsCars, you can't better 17th)
De Silvestro (22nd)

GrayRay's raced better than he's qualified this season. Although in my personal estimations he's beginning to come close to the seat-filler zone. Then again, I thought that about Conway so I'm clearly an idiot.

He never finished with a good result though. He had the podium at Long Beach, but hasn't done anything of notice since. Doesn't look anymore impressive than he did when he ran for Ganassi (I thought he'd be a front runner there), in fact, I think he has regressed. Obviously daddy's team isn't the same as a backdoor team at Ganassi, but he could do better.

One last digression. Even though I gave Andrew the  for his dirt track comments, California tracks are usually clay that stays moist (tacky) all night. Getting sprayed with dirt was a rarity left for daytime races or sudden weather changes that affected track prep. I can only think of a few times, literally 3 or 4 tops, where I was covered with dirt. One of those, the crowd was so large, I had to sit near the track.

Then again, I did try to sit higher in the stands after my first experience which was a daytime race :D

But back to Iowa Speedway and IndyCar.

Yes, carry on...

I'll do an Ed Carpenter post later, just to repent :D

Part #1 is over. Top 6: Helio, Marco, Power, TK, Hinch, Oriol (!). First 7 cars are Chevys, then 7 hondas. Dario (20) and RHR (22) slow, RHR must've messed up his lap, I think he was the only one to be slower than on the warm-up lap. Beatriz didn't qualify for some reason.

And now we wait - for about two hours if I'm not mistaken?

More like she just didn't set a time. I guess if you were willing to take the grid penalty in the heat, I guess not taking a run would be okay. Since she is on a small budget, I guess not pushing that extra lap could save some money.

Quoted for truth! Again though, this only impacts those 3 guys who usually sit around the pub in the middle of Britain drinking cheap beer and wishing they knew what time the race started so they could go home to watch.

Heh! Can't fool us this time though as ESPN UK have the race live for once :p

Though I may well miss it (the start anyway) as I'm travelling back from seeing my dear old Mum. I'd drive faster but I'm coming by train :(

I hope I've recorded it but have the sinking feeling that I may have left too many old episodes of CSI on the box

So I'm assuming teams get extra tires and junk for these heats right? Did they release any engine rules or anything for these?
